Significance and Use3.1 Prior to beginning a project that involves the removal,cutting, grinding, or burning of pain

7、t, it is necessary todetermine if the coating contains hazardous materials, such aslead, as certain requirements for worker and environmentalprotection may need to be imposed. The presence and quantityof hazardous materials in a paint can be determined throughlaboratory analysis; however, since the

8、analysis is based on theweight of the specimen, the removal of the sample must beproperly controlled to improve the reliability of the test results.The number and location of samples to be removed must alsobe determined to characterize properly the extent of thepresence of hazardous materials, if an

9、y, on a structure.4. Materials and Equipment4.1 Sample Collection ContainerA clean plastic bag orrigid container comprised of a material such as polyethylenethat will not contaminate the sample.4.2 Straight Edge or Ruler.4.3 Knife or Chisel, cleaned and sharpened, for removingpaint samples.4.4 Dry F

10、ilm Thickness Gage, for measuring total coatingthickness.5. Procedure5.1 Select a sufficient number of areas for coating removalthat properly characterize the coatings on the structure.5.1.1 Selection may be based on painting history, knowl-edge of previously applied coatings, prior touch-up and re-

11、painting programs, and other such factors.5.1.2 Select areas that properly characterize the range ofthickness found. Dry film thickness can be measured inaccordance with Test Methods D4138, D6132, or PracticeD7091.5.1.3 Remove a minimum of three samples.5.2 At each sample site, clean the surface of

12、dirt, dust, ordebris.NOTE 1Hazardous materials can be present in surface debris andchalk which may be removed during cleaning. Thus, consideration shouldbe given to collecting this surface debris and chalk for analysis.5.3 At each sample site, use a knife and straight edge toscribe the perimeter of

13、a square through the coating film to thesubstrate. 16、s (10 mils)thick will generate one gram of sample in a square that is 5 cm (2 in.) ona side assuming 100 percent of the material is collected. Paint densitynormally ranges from 1.1 to 2.5 g/cm3. Adjust the sample size based ondensity, thickness and collection efficiency.5.4 Remove essentially all of

17、 the coating within the squaredown to the substrate by scraping, by making closely-spacedparallel scribes to disbond ribbons of the coating, or othercontrolled means that permit collection of all of the filmscrapings. Take extreme care to remove the coating to thesubstrate, but avoid including porti

18、ons of the substrate itself inthe sample. Place all chips and scrapings in the sample bag orcontainer.NOTE 3The controlled application of heat to the sample area mayassist in paint removal, but health and safety concerns must be carefullyaddressed before using such methods.5.5 Seal the sample bag or

19、 container, tape shut to avoidaccidental or unauthorized opening, and complete the informa-tion as designated in Section 6.6. Report6.1 Sample ContainersReport the following minimum in-formation on each sample container:6.1.1 Identification number (This is a unique number as-signed to each sample.).

20、6.1.2 Date and time of sampling.6.1.3 Project name and location.6.1.4 Name and signature of technician removing sample.6.2 Chain of Custody FormReport the following minimuminformation:6.2.1 Project name and location.6.2.2 Name of technician removing sample.6.2.3 Unique sample number, date and time o

21、f sampleremoval, and specific location from which sample is removed.6.2.4 The laboratory analysis specified for each component(for example, lead, chromium, etc., as required in the contractdocuments, or as agreed upon between purchaser and seller).Caution the laboratory that fragments of the substra

22、te, ifincluded in the sample, should be removed prior to analysis.6.2.5 Signatures and dates for each transfer of the samplesfrom the technician through the carrier(s) to the laboratoryreceiving the samples.7.
