18、e and Use3.1 This test method is useful in confirming that a materialhas been added to the asphalt to provide a significant elasto-meric characteristic. It does not necessarily identify the type oramount of material added.NOTE 1The quality of results produced by this standard is dependenton the comp

19、etence of the personnel performing the procedure and thecapability, calibration, and maintenance of the equipment used. Agenciesthat meet the criteria of Specification D3666 are generally consideredcapable of competent and objective testing, sampling, inspection, etc.Users of this standard are cauti

20、oned that compliance with SpecificationD3666 alone does not completely ensure reliable results. Reliable resultsdepend on many factors; following the suggestions of Specification D3666or some similar acceptable guidance provides a means of evaluating andcontrolling some of those factors.4. 35、lt ResidueIf the sample is a residualproduct recovered from emulsified asphalt by means of themethods described in Test Methods D6934, D6997, D7403,orPractice D7497, stir the heated residue and immediately pourportions of the residue into suitable molds for making therequired tests. If it is suspect

36、ed that there is foreign matter inthe residue, pour the material through a 300-m No. 50 sievethat has been preheated at 135 6 5 C 275 6 10 F prior topouring into the test molds. (See Note 5.)5.2 Unaged SampleIf the sample is an asphalt binder, carefully heat the sample in a covered container to preve

If it is suspected that the sample contains foreignmatter, strain the melted sample through a 300-m No. 50sieve that has been preheated at 135 6 5 C 275 6 10 F.(See Note 6.)5

38、.3 Aged SampleIf the sample is a conditioned residueobtained from Test Method D1754/D1754M or D2872, com-bine the residue into a single container, cover, and heat in anoven set at 135 6 5 C 275 6 10 F. (See Note 6.)NOTE 5In the case of higher viscosity emulsified asphalt residues orresidues from lower temperature distillations that will not pass a 300-m(No. 50) sieve, an 850-m (No. 20) sieve may be used.NOTE 6In those cases where the sa

In the case ofhigher viscosity materials that will not pass a 300-m No. 50 sieve, an850-m No. 20 sieve may be used.6. Procedure6.1 Assemble the mold on the brass plate. Thoroughly coatthe surface of the plate an

The plate upon which the moldshall be placed shall be perfectly flat and level so that thebottom surface of the mold will be in contact throughout. Aftersample prep

42、aration as described in Section 5, thoroughly stirthe sample and pour into the mold. In filling the mold, take carenot to disarrange the pieces of the mold, thus distorting theshape. In filling, take care to pour and place material in astream back and forth from end to end until the mold is morethan

43、 level full. Allow the filled mold to cool to room tempera-ture for 35 6 5 min. Then place in the water bath at the testtemperature for 30 6 5 min. Remove the test specimens fromthe water bath and immediately trim the excess material with ahot trimming tool to make the molds just level full. (See No

44、te7.)6.2 Keeping Specimens at Standard TemperaturePlace thetrimmed specimen and mold in the water bath at the specifiedtest temperature for 90 6 5 min prior to testing. Remove thespecimen from the plate by a shearing action between speci-men and plate, avoiding any bending of the test specimen.Remov

Attach the specimen to the testingmachine and immediately test the specimen.6.3 Testing, Procedure AAttach the rings at each end ofthe clips to the pins or hooks in the testing machine and pull thetwo clips apart at a u

46、niform speed to an elongation of 10 60.25 cm, unless otherwise specified. Stop the elongation andimmediately cut the test specimen into two halves at themidpoint using the scissors. Allow the specimen to remain inthe testing machine in an undisturbed condition at the specifiedtemperature for a perio

If the specimenends have sagged, carefully lift them to their original levelprior to adjusting the ends to touch. Record the total length ofthe specimen with

Stop the elongation and maintain the specimen in thisposition for 5 m

Allow the specimen toremain in the testing machine in an undisturbed condition at thespecified temperature for a period of 60 min. After the 60-mintime period, carefully move the traveling carriage back to aposition where the ends of the specimens just touch. If thespecimen ends have sagged, carefully lift them to their originallevel prior to adjusting the ends to touch. Record the
