Significance and Use4.1 The pressure-sensitive paper-backed tapes covered by
9、this specification are intended for packaging applications suchas bundling small parts to be overpacked, holding small partsto larger assemblies, and for temporary closure of chipboardboxes and fiberboard boxes that are not to be shipped bycommon carrier. They are also for general use applicationssu
10、ch as in temporarily masking surfaces from being covered bypaint, varnish, or other finishing materials. These tapes are notintended to be a substitute for tapes covered by SpecificationD5486/D5486M. Type I is for use where conformability isdesired. Type II is for uses requiring more strength and fo
11、rstraight line masking.5. Classification5.1 Type I is crepe paper backed.5.2 Type II is flat paper backed.6. Materials and Manufacture7.1 The materials used in the construction of the tape shall
16、be such as to ensure conformance to the requirements of thisspecification.7.2 BackingThe paper backing shall be treated to make itresistant to water, paints, varnish and other finishing materials.The backing shall have sufficient strength to allow the tape tobe unwound from the roll and to be remove
17、d from the maskedsurface after application of finishing materials without break-age or delamination.7.3 AdhesiveThe adhesive shall be pressure-sensitive,water-insoluble, and shall require no moisture, heat, or otherpreparation prior to or after application to clean, dry surfaces.The adhesive shall b
18、e coated in a smooth and evenly distrib-uted layer on one side of the backing.7.4 RollsThe tape shall be evenly wound in rolls, adhe-sive side in, on cores made of paper-fiber or plastic. The coreshall have sufficient rigidity to prevent distortion under normalconditions of transportation and use. T
19、he inside diameter of thecore shall be 76.2 0 + 1.6 mm (3 0 +116 in.). When the rollis unwound, the backing shall not tear; the adhesive shall nottransfer nor split from the face of the tape backing to theadjacent layer before or after aging (see Table 1).8. Physical Properties8.1 The tape shall com
20、ply with the physical requirementslisted in Table 1 and the water-solubility requirement asdescribed in Test Method D5570.9. Dimensions, Mass, and Permissible Variations9.1 WidthThe width of the tape shall be12 in. or 12 mm;34 in. or 18 mm; 1 in. or 24 mm; 112 in. or 36 mm; 2 in. or 48mm or other co
21、mmercially available widths, as specified (see6.1.3). A width tolerance of 6132 in. or 0.75 mm shall beallowed on all widths.9.2 LengthThe length shall be 60 yd or 50 or 55 m orother commercially available lengths, as specified (see 6.1.3).9.3 SplicesThe roll shall consist of a single length of tape
22、,except that any single roll may contain a maximum of onesplice. A splice shall not separate when the roll is unwound byhand or machine.10. Workmanship10.1 The tape shall be constructed uniformly and be free ofdefects that impair its usefulness for the purpose intended (seeSection 4). The adhesive c
23、oating shall be a uniform coatingcovering one entire side of the tape. The edges shall be clean,straight, and unbroken. The rolls shall be wound evenly. Thefinished product shall conform to the levels of quality estab-lished herein.11. Sampling11.1 End Item ExaminationThe lot size for visual inspec-
24、tion shall be as specified in the end item inspection of 6.3 ofPractice D3715/D3715M. The sample unit shall be one roll.11.2 End Item TestingLot size and sampling for end itemtesting shall be as specified in end item testing of 6.4 ofPractice D3715/D3715M. The AQL shall be 4.0 %.12. Specimen Prepara
25、tion and Number of Tests12.1 Specimen preparation shall be as specified in theappropriate test method.12.2 Number of tests per unit of product shall be asspecified in the appropriate test method.12.3 First Article of ManufactureWhen a product is firstmanufactured in a plant, it shall be tested and i
26、nspected todetermine compliance with all examinations and tests of thisspecification. First article of manufacture examinations needonly be repeated when there is a change in materials, processes,or plant of manufacture. Specimens shall consist of at least fiverolls of tape representing a standard p
27、roduction lot.13. Test Methods13.1 Responsibility for InspectionUnless otherwise speci-fied in the contract or order, the manufacturer is responsible forthe performance of all inspection requirements as specifiedherein.13.2 Responsibility for ComplianceAll items must meetall requirements of Sections
28、 7-16. The inspections set forth inthis specification shall become part of the manufacturersoverall inspection system or quality program for the contract ororder. The absence of any inspection requirements in thespecification shall not relieve the manufacturer of the respon-sibility of ensuring that
29、 all products or supplies submitted foracceptance comply with all the requirements of the contract ororder. Sampling in quality conformance does not authorizesubmission of known defective material, either indicated oractual, nor does it commit the buyer to acceptance of defectivematerial.13.3 Classi

Rejected material should bereported to the producer or supplier promptly and in writing.The producer or supplier may make claim for rehearing i
35、ncases of dissatisfaction with the results of any of the tests.15. Environmental Considerations15.1 Environmental ConsiderationsThe use of potentiallytoxic materials in the manufacture of tapes covered by thisspecification are of concern because of their presence inemissions should they be incinerat
36、ed or in leachate whenlandfilled. Materials used in the manufacture of tapes coveredby this specification shall not have any lead, cadmium,mercury, or hexavalent chromium intentionally introduced as acomponent during manufacture as opposed to the incidentalpresence of any of these elements.16. Certi
37、fication16.1 When specified (see 6.1.4) in the purchase order orcontract the manufacturer shall certify that the backing of thetapes is as specified (see 7.2).16.2 When specified (see 6.1.4) in the purchase order orcontract the purchaser shall be furnished a certification statingthat the sample roll
38、s representing each log of tape have beentested and inspected as directed in this specification, therequirements have been met and the tape has been produced ina manufacturing facility certified under ISO 9002.17. Preparation for Delivery17.1 Unless otherwise specified in the purchase order orcontra
39、ct, rolls of tape shall be packaged and packed inaccordance with Practice D3951. Such packing shall ensurearrival at the destination in a satisfactory condition and shall beacceptable to the carrier at the lowest rate.17.2 When specified (see 6.1.5), shipments to the U.S.Government shall be packaged
40、 and packed in accordance withPPP-T-680 at the levels specified in the purchase order orcontract.18.
