、Designation: D 6287 09Standard Practice forCutting Film and Sheeting Test Specimens1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 6287; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in

、parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope*1.1 This practice covers equipment and techniques forcutting film and sheeting specimens for testing.2The speci-mens are nick-free, non-stretched an

、d can be rapidly prepared.1.2 The values given in SI units are to be consideredstandard. The values given in parentheses are for informationonly.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this stand

Significance and Use3.1 Many test methods including Test Methods D 882,D 2838, and F88require the use of narrow strips of varyinglength. The

、quality of the sample preparation directly affectstest results. This practice describes two techniques for prepar-ing samples with straight, clean, parallel edges with no visibleimperfections.NOTE 2After cutting, each specimen should be examined visually toinsure the edges are undamaged (free of nic

、ks). On a periodic basisspecimen edge quality should be evaluated by microscopic examination. To determine when cutting blades need to be replaced or sharpened, acontrol chart of tensile strength and percent elongation at break (see TestMethod D 882) of a uniform material may be maintained. Tensile s

、trengthand percent elongation at break will decrease as the quality of specimencutting decreases.4. Thistype of cutter has been redesigned to meet current government regulationsand retain its original desirable characteristics plus additional improve-ments.4.2 Procedure BA dual blade shear cutter (Fig. 2) withparallelism tolerances within 0.0254 mm (0.001 in.).
