Scope1.1 This test method measures the resistance of the bridge ofa sew-through button to a steadily increasing strain.1.2 The

3、 values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as the standard. Within the text,the inch-pound units are shown in parentheses. The valuesstated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other. Combiningvalue

Terminology3.1 For button definitions, refer to Terminology D 5497.4. Summary of Test Method4.1 The sew-through flange button is sewn onto fabric andpositioned in

6、 a clamping fixture. The combination is subjectedto a strain recorded on a force gauge.4.2 Tests are made on sew through flange buttons beforelaundering or dry cleaning with the option of testing again aftera predetermined number of launderings or dry cleanings.5. Significance and Use5.1 This test m

7、easures an important property to users of sewthrough flange buttons. This is a means of determining theresistance of the bridge of the button to a strain which cancause it to fall off a garment to which it is attached.5.2 If there are differences of practical significance betweenthe reported test re

8、sults for two laboratories (or more), com-parative tests should be performed to determine if there is astatistical bias between them, using competent statistical assis-tance. As a minimum, test samples should be used that are ashomogeneous as possible, that are drawn from the materialfrom which the

9、disparate test results were obtained, and thatare randomly assigned in equal numbers to each laboratory fortesting, Other materials with established test values may beused for this purpose. The test results for the two laboratoriesshould be compared using a statistical test for unpaired data, ata pr

10、obability level chosen prior to the testing series. If a bias isfound, either its cause must be found and corrected, or futuretest results must be adjusted in consideration of the knownbias.6. Apparatus6.1 Force GaugeOne capable of measuring 20 kg (44 lbs)of tension or compression with an accuracy o

11、f 6 0.1 kg (60.22 lbs). The gauge may be hand held or specially mounted.6.2 Testing MachineA constant rate of extension (CRE)Tester shall be used. The capacity of the machine must beselected for the break position on the gauge to fall within20-90 % of full scale.6.3 Jaw Clamping FixtureOne capable o

12、f firmly holdingthe button, such as a long nose locking wrench or a 3-prongedclamping device.6.4 Commercial Sewing MachineOne capable of auto-matically sewing the button to. two or more layers of fabric.7. Sampling7.1 Laboratory SampleRandomly select quantity of but-tons, approximately 100-200, from

13、 the same carton and fromboxes within that carton that adequately represent the materialfrom which test specimens may be chosen.7.2 Test SpecimensRandomly select 15-25 buttons fromthe laboratory sample for testing, if test specimens are submit-ted for preproduction approval, testing 15 buttons is ac

Following conditioning prepare the speci-mens as instructed in 9.4 of practice D 618. Preconditioning isnot required.9. Specimen Preparation9.1 Sets

17、, consisting of 5 buttons each, are prepared byattaching the. buttons, at least 12.7 cm (5 in.) apart, withfactory sewing equipment, to at least two layered production ordevelopment fabric processed to production finish.NOTE 1Suggested method is to use two layered cotton fabric, 12threads per button

18、 with a minimum pull strength of the fabric and threadof 15 lbs.10. Procedure10.1 Select a set of buttons sewn onto fabric and positionthe clamping fixture underneath one of the buttons. Carefullyposition the attachment of he fixture so as not to affect thestructural integrity of the button.10.2 Pos

19、ition the clamped fixture into the “L” shaped hookof the force gauge or upper clamp of the commercial tester.10.3 Place two ends of the fabric into the open jaws of thelower clamp with proper alignment10.4 Activate the tester or pull down on the fabric untilfailure.11. Report11.1 State that the spec

20、imens were tested as directed in TestMethod D 6644.11.2 Report the following information.11.2.1 Force required to remove buttons from fabric (bridgeof button breaks).11.2.2 Report individual gauge readings and calculate aver-age.11.2.3 Report the failure mode (button failure, fabric failure,stitchin

Precision and Bias12.1 PrecisionThe precision of this test has not beenestablished.12.2 BiasNo justifiable statement can be made on the biasof Test Method D 6644 for Testing the Tension Strength of SewThrough Flange Buttons since the true values cannot beestablished by an accepted ref
