General Requirements3.1 The sealant shall be composed of a mixture of materialsthat will form a resilient and adhesive compound capable ofeffectively sealing joint

8、s and cracks in concrete and asphalticpavements against the infiltration of moisture and foreignmaterial throughout repeated cycles of expansion and contrac-tion with temperature changes, and that will not, at ambienttemperatures, flow from the joint or be picked up by vehicletires. The material sha

9、ll be capable of being brought to auniform pouring consistency suitable for completely filling thejoints without inclusion of large air holes or discontinuities andwithout damage to the material. It shall remain relativelyunchanged in application characteristics for at least6hattherecommended applic

10、ation temperature in the field.4. Classification4.1 Type IA joint and crack sealant capable of maintain-ing an effective seal in moderate climates. The material istested for low temperature performance at 18C using 50 %extension (formerly Specification D 1190).4.2 Type IIA joint and crack sealant ca

11、pable of maintain-ing an effective seal in most climates. Material is tested for lowtemperature performance at 29C using 50 % extension (for-merly Specification D 3405).4.3 Type IIIA joint and crack sealant capable of maintain-ing an effective seal in most climates. Material is tested for lowtempera

12、ture performance at 29C using 50 % extension.Special tests are included (formerly Federal Spec SS-S-1401C).4.4 Type IVA joint and crack sealant capable of maintain-ing an effective seal in climates experiencing very coldtemperatures. Physical Requirements5.1 Maximum Heating TemperatureThe maximum heat-ing temperature is the highest temperature to which a sealantcan be heated, and still conform to all the requirementsspecified herein. For pu

17、rposes of testing as specified hereinaf-ter, the application temperature shall be the same as themaximum heating temperature. The maximum heating tem-perature shall be set forth by the manufacturer, shall be shownon all containers and shall be provided to the testing agencybefore any laboratory test

18、s are begun.5.2 The sealant shall conform to the requirements pre-scribed in Table 1.6. Sampling and Heating6.1 Sampling:6.1.1 Samples may be taken at the plant or warehouse priorto delivery or at the time of delivery, at the option of thepurchaser. If sampling is done prior to shipment, the inspect

19、orrepresenting the purchaser shall have free access to the materialto be sampled. The inspector shall be afforded all reasonablefacilities for inspection and sampling which shall be conductedso as not to interfere unnecessarily with the operation of theworks.6.1.2 Samples shall consist of one of the

20、 manufacturersoriginal sealed containers selected at random from the lot orbatch of finished material. A batch or lot shall be considered asall finished material that was manufactured simultaneously orcontinuously as a unit between the time of compounding andthe time of packaging or placing in shipp

21、ing containers.6.1.3 Obtain the sealant portion for testing from the selectedmanufacturers original sealed container in accordance withPractice D 5167. The sample portion added to and heated in themelter shall weigh 800 6 50 g for Types I, II, IV, and 1600 650 g for Type III. Both pots of the melter

22、 described in PracticeD 5167 shall be used for Type III.6.2 HeatingHeat the material in accordance with PracticeD 5167.6.2.1 The oil bath in the melter shall be heated to atemperature between the sealants maximum heating tempera-ture and 42C above the sealants maximum heating tempera-ture. (Never al

23、low the oil temperature to exceed 288C). Addthe sealant to the melter according to the instructions inPractice D 5167.After the sample has been added to the melter,regulate the oil temperature within the listed temperature limitswhile raising the sealants temperature to manufacturersrecommended maxi

24、mum heating temperature within the re-quired 1 hour of time, as stated in Practice D 5167. Immedi-ately upon reaching the maximum heating temperature, poursamples for testing, except for Type III which shall be heatedfor 3 h from the time of first addition to the melter.7. Test Methods7.1 Specimen C

26、oint accord-ing to Test Method D36.7.4 Bond, Non-ImmersedDetermine the bond accordingto Test Method D 5329 for Bond, non-immersed.7.4.1 After final scrubbing and blotting specified in TestMethod D 5329, air dry the blocks on their 12.7 mm 3 25.4mm ends at standard laboratory conditions for 1 h 6 10

27、min.prior to pouring bond specimens.7.4.2 Immediately after conditioning the blocks as in 7.4.1,assemble the blocks with spacers as specified in Test MethodD 5329 so the opening between the blocks will form a curedsealant block that is 25.4 mm 6 0.1 mm wide for Type I and12.7 6 0.1 mm wide for Type

28、II , Type III, and Type IV.7.4.3 After pouring material into the block opening, condi-tion the specimen as in 7.1. After conditioning, remove spacersand trim off excess material with a hot knife being careful notto pull sealant from the block. Condition the test specimens notless than 4 h at the tem

29、perature specified in Table 1 for theSpecific Type of Sealant. 36、ompatibility ac-cording to Test Method D 5329.8. Packaging and Marking8.1 The sealing compound shall be delivered in the manu-facturers original containers. Each container shall be legiblymarked with the name of the manufacturer, the trade name ofthe sealant, the manufacturers batch, or lot number a

37、ndspecification number and type, the minimum application tem-perature and the maximum heating temperature. The maximumheating temperature must be at least 11C (20F) higher thanthe minimum application temperature.9. Keywords9.1 hot applied; joint sealantAPPENDIX(Nonmandatory Information)X1.X1.1 Some

38、if not all, materials conforming to this specifi-cation may be damaged by heating to too high a temperature,reheating, or by heating for too long a time. Care should beexercised to secure equipment for heating and application thatis suitable for the purpose and approved by the manufacturer ofthe mat

39、erial. The material should be heated in a kettle or melterconstructed as a double boiler, with the space between the innerand outer shells filled with oil or other heat transfer medium.Thermostatic control for the heat transfer medium shall beprovided and shall have sufficient sensitivity to maintai

40、nsealant temperature within the manufacturers specified appli-cation temperature range. Temperature indicating devices shallhave intervals no greater than 5F (2.8C) and shall becalibrated as required to assure accuracy. The melter shall havea continuous sealant agitation and mixing system to provide

41、uniform viscosity and temperature of material being applied. Ifequipped with an application system to deliver sealant to thepavement, the melter shall incorporate a recirculation pump orother means of maintaining sealant temperature in the deliverysystem. Sealant that has been damaged due to overhea

42、ting,reheating or prolonged heating may experience poor adhesion,softening or bleeding, difficult application, or jelling in themelter. Direct heating must not be used. As a means ofascertaining whether or not the material covered by thisspecification is being or has been damaged in the field as are

43、sult of overheating, reheating, or prolonged heating, flowpanel specimens may be prepared periodically by drawing offsealant directly from the melter-applicator during sealingoperations and then tested for flow according to the methods oftesting materials covered by this specification. Flow in exces

44、sof 3.0 mm for Type II, III, and IV, and 5.0 mm for Type I wouldindicate damage to material caused by improper heatingprocedures.X1.2 Pavement joints in new construction for application ofmaterial covered by this specification should be dry, clean ofall scale, dirt, dust, curing compound, and other

45、foreign matter.The sidewalls of the joint space to be sealed should then bethoroughly sandblasted, blown clean of loose sand by high-pressure air, and sealed by use of the melter-applicator de-scribed in X1.1.X1.3 When material covered by this specification is usedfor maintenance or resealing of joi

46、nts that have containedeither similar or dissimilar sealing material, it is recommendedthat the joint be dry, cleaned thoroughly with a plow, router,wire brush, concrete saw, or other suitable tool or toolsdesigned for the purpose of neatly cleaning pavement joints.Loose material should be blown out

47、. The sidewalls of the jointspace to be sealed should be thoroughly sandblasted, blownfree of loose sand with high-pressure air and then sealed withmaterial by use of the melter-applicator described in X1.1.X1.4 The use of a backer material or bond breaker in thebottom of the joint to be filled with

48、 material covered by thisspecification is recommended to control the depth of thesealant and achieve the desired shape factor, and to support thesealant against indentation and sag. Backup materials and bondbreakers should be compatible with the material. Due to theelevated temperatures of applicati

49、on of material covered bythis specification, care should be exercised in the selection ofthe suitable backer materials. Refer to Specification D 5249 forrecommended backer materials.X1.5 Care should be practiced in the application of materialcovered by this specification to avoid overfilling of the jointspace. Joints should be filled in a neat workmanlike mannerfrom18 to14 in.
