The exposed surfaces containing leadshould be painted or covered6.4 Plywood of minimum 1.3 cm (0.59) thickness forsecuring lead sheets to the calibration bay walls.7. Method A

21、: Shielded Calibration Bay Setup7.1 Set up a shielded calibration bay if more than one gaugeis going to be calibrated simultaneously, and the space betweengauges being calibrated is less than 10 meter (33 ft). If thegauge in storage bay is less than 7 meters (23 ft) from the areawhere the calibratio

22、n is going to take place, or if the area wheregauges are routinely serviced is less than 10 meters (33 ft) fromthe calibration area. Refer to the Appendix X1 for examples ofshielded calibration bay configurations.NOTE 2Use Method B, if section 7.1 does not fit your calibrationfacility requirements.7

23、.1.1 Determine the number of bays required for calibrationof nuclear gauges. This can be based on the number of gaugescalibrated per year and can vary from one to several bays.7.1.2 The bay inside dimensions should be establishedbased on the bay walls being a minimum of 610 mm (24inches) from the ce

However, under no circumstances should the wallsbe less than 610 mm (24 inches) from center of the gauge.NOTE 3Depending on th

25、eir design, some gauges may be less suscep-tible to wall effect. Lead sheets may not be required, if it is determined thatthe counts inside and outside the bay are equal and that the gauge is notaffected by the walls surrounding the calibration bay.7.1.3 The calibration bay wall thickness should be

26、a mini-mum of 410 mm (16 inches) thick. The walls should beconstructed using high-density concrete blocks or cinderblocks filled with sand or fine aggregate material. Stagger theblocks during wall construction to block gaps and to improvewall integrity.7.1.4 The wall height should be 1.0 to 1.3 mete

27、rs (40 to 50inches)7.1.5 Design and construct the bay such that the opening ofthe bay is not in direct line with the storage bay or the areawhere the gauges are serviced7.1.6 Center the calibration reference block(s) in the bay7.1.7 Once the bays are complete and the calibration blocksare setup, fol

30、a minimum of 1 meter (3 ft) from any walls and 10 meter(33 ft) from any gauges.7.2.1.4 Repeat step 7.2.1.2 with the same gauge7.2.1.5 The difference between the counts in step 7.2.1.2and 7.2.1.4 for all gauge depths should be less than 61.0 %.Determine the difference by equation Eq 1 and record to 0

31、.1 %Difference 5SLargest Count 2 Smallest CountLargest CountD3 100 (1)7.2.1.6 If the difference in the counts are higher than the 61.0 % limit, increase the inside wall dimensions or the leadliner thickness and repeat the steps in 7.2.1.1-7.2.1.5.7.2.1.7 Repeat this procedure for all model gauges.7.

32、2.2 Reference Standard Count Verification in ShieldedCalibration Bay(s)The size and geometry of gauges willhave an effect on the accuracy of the standard counts. Foraccurate calibration, standard counts taken on top of calibrationreference block(s) should closely match counts taken on theground.7.2.

33、2.1 Place the gauge on its reference standard block ontop of the calibration reference block which is to be used forgauge standardization.7.2.2.2 Take a total of 20 minute standardization count. Thedifference in counts as calculated by equation 1 should be lessthan or equal to 6 2.0 % for moisture standard and 6 1.0 % fordensity standard.7.2.2.9 If the differences exceed the limits given in 7.2.2.8,expand the bay dimensions, apply

36、 correction factors for thecounts taken on top of the calibration reference block(s) or takethe standard counts on the ground. It is important that thissection is repeated for each gauge model.7.2.3 Between Bay Cross Talk VerificationSufficientshielding should be provided between adjacent shielded c

Increasednumber of gauges in one bay can affect the calibration accuracy of g

Shielded Storage Bay Setup8.1 Setup a shielded storage bay if more than five gauges areroutinely stored at a distance of 7 meters (23 ft) or less from thearea where gauge calibration is to take p

43、lace. If five or lessgauges are routinely stored in the storage area, concrete wallsare not necessary. However, gauges should be stored in theirshipping cases, while calibrating other gauges. Refer to theAppendix X1 for examples of shielded storage bay configura-tions.8.1.1 The storage bay should no

44、t be setup directly under orover the area where gauges are to be calibrated.8.1.2 Stagger the blocks during wall construction to blockgaps and to improve wall integrity.8.1.3 If more than five gauges are routinely stored in thestorage bay, build a wall made from high density concrete orcinder blocks

45、 filled with sand or fine aggregate material.8.1.4 The wall thickness for the storage bay should be aminimum of 410 mm (16 inches). The wall should completelysurround the area where the gauges are planned to be stored. Ifgauges are stored on shelves that are elevated from the floor, the height of the

46、 wall should be a minimum of 0.5 meter (20inch) above the height of the shelves on which gauges arestored.NOTE 5Additional requirements might be necessary in order to meetState and Federal licensing regulations. These requirements might include, lockable doors to limit access and appropriate caution

47、signs. Users shouldcheck their materials license requirements and check with their regulatoryagency when building storage bays for nuclear gauges.9. Method B: Configuration of an Unshielded Bay9.1 The area where the gauges are stored and are beingworked on should be at least 10 meters (33 ft) away f

General Care10.1 Clean calibration reference block(s) periodically usingblock manufacturers recommendations10.2 Monitor the background readings in your calibrationarea. Backgrounds taken should not vary by more than 63.0 % from the average of the four previous backgroundcounts. If background counts have increased above the 63.0 % limit, identify the reason and make t
