General Requirements3.1 The sealant, when in place, shall form a resilient andcohesive

7、compound that shall effectively seal joints in concretethroughout repeated cycles of expansion and contraction, andagainst the infiltration of moisture, fuel, and incompressibles. Itshall not, at ambient temperatures, flow from the joint or bepicked up by vehicle tires. The material shall be capable

8、 ofbeing brought to a uniform pouring consistency suitable forcompletely filling the joints without inclusion of large air holesor discontinuities and without damage to the material. It shallremain relatively unchanged in application characteristics forat least6hattherecommended application temperat

9、ure in thefield.4. Classification4.1 Type IA joint sealant which is resilient and capable ofmaintaining an effective seal in hot to moderate climates.Material is tested for low temperature performance at -18Cusing 50 % extension (see Specification D3569).4.2 Type IIA joint sealant capable of maintai

10、ning aneffective seal in hot to moderate climates. Material is tested forlow temperature performance at -18C using 50 % extension.Special tests are included (see Federal Spec SS-S-1614A).4.3 Type IIIA joint sealant capable of maintaining aneffective seal in most climates experiencing moderate to col

11、dtemperatures. Material is tested for low temperature perfor-mance at -29C using 50 % extension.NOTE 1It is the responsibility of the user agency to determine whichtype is most applicable to their conditions.5. Physical Requirements5.1 Maximum Heating TemperatureThe maximum heat-ing temperature is t

12、he highest temperature to which a sealantcan be heated, and still conform to all the requirementsspecified herein. For purposes of testing as specifiedhereinafter, the application temperature shall be the same as themaximum heating temperature. The maximum heating tem-perature shall be set forth by

13、the manufacturer, shall be shownon all containers and shall be provided to the testing agencybefore any laboratory tests are begun. 17、r than themanufacturers recommended application temperature.5.2 The preparation requirements for each sealant are listedin Table 1.5.3 Sealant shall conform to the requirements prescribed inTable 2.6. Sampling and Heating6.1 Sampling:6.1.1 Samples may be taken at the plant or warehouse priorto deliv

18、ery or at the time of delivery, at the option of thepurchaser. If sampling is done prior to shipment, the inspectorrepresenting the purchaser shall have free access to the materialto be sampled. The inspector shall be afforded all reasonablefacilities for inspection and sampling which shall be condu

19、ctedso as not to interfere unnecessarily with the operation of theworks.6.1.2 Samples shall consist of one of the manufacturersoriginal sealed containers selected at random from the lot orbatch of finished material.Abatch or lot shall be considered asall finished material that was manufactured simul

20、taneously orcontinuously as a unit between the time of compounding andthe time of packaging or placing in shipping containers.6.1.3 Obtain the sealant portion for testing from the selectedmanufacturers original sealed container in accordance withPractice D5167. The sample portion added to and heated

21、 in themelter shall weigh as specified in Table 1. Both pots of themelter described in Practice D5167 shall be used for samplesexceeding 1250 g and each pot shall contain at least 625 g butnot more than 850 g.6.2 HeatingHeat the material in accordance with PracticeD5167.6.2.1 The oil bath in the mel

22、ter shall be heated to atemperature between the sealants maximum heating tempera-ture and 20C above the sealants maximum heating tempera-ture. (Never allow the oil temperature to exceed 288C). Addthe sealant to the melter according to the instructions inPractice D5167.After the sample has been added

23、 to the melter,regulate the oil temperature within the listed temperature limitswhile raising the sealants temperature to manufacturersrecommended maximum heating temperature within the re-quired 1 hour of time, as stated in Practice D5167. The heatingtime for each type of sealant as well as the sta

24、rt of the heatingtime shall be as specified in Table 1.7. Test Methods7.1 Specimen ConditioningCondition all specimens atstandard laboratory conditions as specified in Test MethodD5329 prior to beginning any testing. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE AND APPLICATIONX1.1 Some if not all, materials conforming to this specifi-cation may be damaged by heating to too high a temperature,reheating, or by heating for too long a time. Care should beexercised to secure equipment f

47、or heating and application thatis suitable for the purpose and approved by the manufacturer ofthe material. The material should be heated in a kettle or melterconstructed as a double boiler, with the space between the innerand outer shells filled with oil or other heat transfer medium.Thermostatic c

48、ontrol for the heat transfer medium shall beprovided and shall have sufficient sensitivity to maintainsealant temperature within the manufacturers specified appli-cation temperature range. Temperature indicating devices shallhave intervals no greater than 2.8C (5F) and shall becalibrated as required

49、 to assure accuracy. The melter shall havea continuous sealant agitation and mixing system to provideuniform viscosity and temperature of material being applied. Ifequipped with an application system to deliver sealant to thepavement, the melter shall incorporate a recirculation pump orother means of maintaining sealant temperature in the deliverysystem. Sealant that has been damaged due to overheating,reheating or prolonged heating may experience poor adhesion,softening or bleeding, dif
