、Designation: D 7119 07Standard Guide forSampling Spray Polyurethane Foam and Coating inRoofing1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 7119; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A

、 number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This guide covers the removal of test specimens fromspray polyurethane foam (SPF) roofing systems in the field forthe purpose of exam

、ination of an existing system and/or qualityassurance for new installations. It describes the types andpurposes of sample cuts, visual inspection techniques, labora-tory physical property tests, and repair of the core and slitsample holes.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafet

、y concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2. Terminology3.1 DefinitionsDefinitions are in accordance with Termi-nology D 1079.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 core samples, ncylindrical sections of approxi-

、mately 50 to 75 mm (2 to 3 in.) in diameter. They shall be cutusing a round metal template or coring tool, and they shallextend from surface down to but not through the substrate.3.2.2 slit samples, ncrescent-shaped samples approxi-mately 13 mm (12 in.) wide, 19 mm (34 in.) deep, and 50 to 75mm (2 t

、o 3 in.) long, cut with a sharp knife. Slit samples areused to examine the uppermost polyurethane foam layers andthe coating system.3.3 lift, nan individual layer of polyurethane foam thatresults from a single pass of the spray gun.4. Significance and Use4.1 Adequate coating thickness (mil thickness

、) is necessaryto protect polyurethane foam from the effects of ultravioletdegradation. This guide outlines general procedures for sam-pling and measuring the coating thickness by using slit or coresamples.4.2 Thickness of individual lifts of sprayed foam will havea bearing upon foam stability. Core

、samples are used todetermine foam thickness. Compressive strength and coredensity affect resistance to foot traffic and impact. Specimensfrom core samples are used to determine these properties usingTest Methods D 1621 and D 1622. Visual examinations of corespecimens also indicate the quality of adh

、esion of the coatingand the foam, between foam lifts, and between foam andsubstrate.4.3 Slit samples are used to visually examine the foams cellstructure, the number of coating layers applied, dry filmthickness of the coating, and coating adhesion.5. 12、ed Sprayed Polyurethane Roof Systems5.1 When specified, samples shall be taken from the SPFroofing system for quality assurance. The sampling frequencyshall be according to 5.2 and 5.3 unless another samplingfrequency has been specified.5.2 Two core samples shall be taken from the first 900m2(10 000

、 ft2) of roof area and one for each additional 900 m2(10 000 ft2) or fraction thereof.1This guide is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D08 on Roofing andWaterproofing and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D08.06 on SprayPolyurethane Foam Roof Systems.Current edition approved July 1

Inspection7.1 In locations where a

、 slit sample is to be removed, ameasuring probe can first be inserted through the coating andfoam to measure the foam depth.7.2 Measure the coating thickness on the slit sample with anoptical comparator and record the coating thickness.7.3 Visually inspect core specimens for cell structure andcondit
