3、s may serve in multiple structural capacities, including: providing floor closureand diaphragm attachment, transferring vertical and in-plane lateral loads, restricting out-of-planerotation and lateral translation at the ends of the floor joists, providing deck ledger attachment, andspanning wall op

4、enings as a header material. Rim board products, which serve a principal role as acomponent integrated within a rim board assembly, can vary by wood species, size, shape, and type.Rim board products and assemblies require evaluation of their mechanical properties, physicalproperties, and their respo

5、nse to end use environments. Procedures established in this Specificationprovide a means to test rim board products and assemblies, to judge their acceptability, and to establishallowable design capacities.1. Scope1.1 This specification provides procedures for testing andestablishing the structural

6、capacities of proprietary rim boardproducts and assemblies for use in light-frame wood construc-tion using I-joist or structural composite lumber joist framing.It does not apply to rim board products manufactured to acommodity rim board standard.1.2 This specification was developed in light of curre

7、ntlymanufactured panel, structural composite lumber, and pre-fabricated I-joist rim board products as defined in 3.2. Mate-rials that do not conform to the definitions of 3.2 are beyondthe scope of this specification.1.3 Fire safety, sound transmission, building envelope per-formance, and cutting/no

8、tching attributes of rim board prod-ucts and assemblies are all items that may need to beconsidered in an end-use application. These items fall outsidethe scope of this specification.1.4 This specification primarily considers end use in dryservice conditions, such as most protected framing members,w

9、here the equilibrium moisture content for solid-sawn lumberis less than 16 %.1.5 This specification provides methods to establish “allow-able stress” design resistances for use with the National DesignSpecification for Wood Construction (NDS). Derivation ofdesign resistances from the test data in ac

10、cordance with “loadand resistance factor design” or “limit states design” arebeyond the scope of this specification.1.6 Quality control requirements are outside the scope ofthis Specification.1.7 The performance of a rim board product will be affectedby the constituent wood species, geometry, adhesi

11、ve, andproduction parameters. Therefore, rim board products pro-duced by each individual manufacturer shall be evaluated todetermine their product properties, regardless of the similarityin characteristics to products produced by other manufacturers.1.8 Where a manufacturer produces product in more

12、thanone facility, each production facility shall be evaluated inde-pendently. For additional production facilities, any revisions tothe full qualification program in accordance with this specifi-cation shall be approved by an accredited, independent quali-fying agency.1.9 The values stated in inch-p

13、ound units are to be regardedas standard. 19、 attachment of the rim board to wall plates above and below;(3) attachment of the rim board to the joist ends; (4) attachmentof exterior wall siding to the rim board; and (5) attachment ofany required hardware to the face. While it is permissible todevelop most of these capacities based upon the mat

20、erialproperties established in 4.4 and the relevant design provisionsof the NDS, the in-plane lateral load capacity of the rimassembly shall be empirically established as outlined in thisSpecification. If the rim board assembly with a rectangularwood-based rim board is to be additionally qualified t

21、o supportan exterior deck ledger, then deck ledger fastener attachmentsmust also be developed. The procedure outlined in thisSpecification can be used for the qualification of deck ledgerattachments. Alternative deck ledger attachment qualificationprocedures may be used in lieu of those contained wi

22、thin thisspecification provided that they consider all potential failuremodes, including deck ledger splitting perpendicular-to-grain.4.4 Product Specific Requirements:4.4.1 I-joist Rim Board ProductsI-joist rim board prod-ucts must be qualified as an I-joist framing material inaccordance with Speci

23、fication D5055, have a minimum flangewidth of 1.5 in. (38 mm), and a minimum manufactured lengthof 8 ft. (2.4 m). I-joists with sawn lumber flanges shall haveestablished fastener capacities into the face and edge thatcomply with the provisions of the NDS. I-joists with structuralcomposite lumber fla

24、nges shall have fastener capacities estab-lished in accordance with Specification D5456. Deck ledgerattachments to I-joist rim board products fall outside the scopeof this specification.4.4.2 Rectangular Wood-Based Rim BoardsRectangularwood-based rim board products shall have a minimum thick-ness of

25、 1.0 in. (25 mm) and a minimum manufactured length of8 ft. (2.4 m). Additionally, they shall satisfy the following.4.4.2.1 Structural Composite LumberStructural compos-ite lumber rim board products shall be made from a materialqualified in accordance with Specification D5456. The axialtension and co

26、mpression capacities need not be qualified forrim board applications unless the product will be permitted tobe used as a drag strut or diaphragm chord. SCL rim boardproducts shall have fastener capacities into the edge and faceestablished in accordance with Specification D5456. Where aSpecification

27、D5456 test method requires minimum specimendimensions that exceed the product thickness, testing the rimboard with its actual thickness shall be permitted.4.4.2.2 Proprietary Plywood and Oriented Strand BoardProprietary plywood and oriented strand board rim boardproducts shall be initially qualified

28、 in accordance with PS-1 orPS-2. In addition, when used as a structural header, theedgewise bending performance of proprietary plywood andoriented strand board rim board products shall be evaluated inaccordance with the Specification D5456 requirements forlaminated veneer lumber or oriented strand l

29、umber, respec-tively. This evaluation shall include, but is not limited to,relevant considerations applicable to edgewise bending, suchas edgewise flexure, shear, and bearing design load establish-ment, duration of load, volume effects, moisture content, etc.The axial tension and compression capacit

30、ies need not bequalified in accordance with Specification D5456 for rim boardapplications unless the product will be used as a drag strut ordiaphragm chord. 31、roduct thickness, testing the rim board with its actualthickness shall be permitted. Proprietary plywood and OSB rimboard products shall have fastener capacities into the edge andface that either comply with published values in the NDS orhave been developed in accordance with Practice D7033.5. Quali

32、fication5.1 GeneralThis section describes procedures, both em-pirical and analytical, for initial qualification of the structuralcapacities of rim board products and assemblies. Qualificationis required for typical details of rim board application sincethey are used commonly and influence structural

33、 capacities.5.2 Qualification ProcessRim board products shall betested in accordance with Section 6 and evaluated in accor-dance with Section 7. The allowable design values anddurability targets shall comply with the limitations specified byTable 1. When deck ledger attachments are qualified forrect

34、angular wood-based rim board products using the proce-dure outlined in this specification, they shall comply with thelimitations specified in Table 2.5.3 SamplingSamples for qualification testing shall berepresentative of the population being evaluated. When amodification to the manufacturing proces

35、s results in a reduc-tion in properties, new qualification testing is required. Sam-pling of the test material shall be done in accordance with theapplicable portions of Section 3, “Statistical Methodology,” ofPractice D2915.5.4 WitnessingQualification tests shall be conducted orwitnessed by a quali

36、fied agency in accordance with Section 8.All test results are to be certified by an accredited, independentqualifying agency.5.5 Moisture Content and DensityMoisture content shallbe measured and reported for each rim board product specimentested in the qualification program in accordance with TestMe

37、thods D4442. The moisture content of other assemblycomponents does not need to be determined. As an alternativeto testing a full cross-section, only the moisture content of theflange materials needs to be tested for I-joist rim boardproducts. Specific gravity shall be measured and reported forrectan

38、gular rim board products in accordance with Test Meth-ods D2395. As an alternative, product density may be reportedbased upon the specimen weight divided by the specimenvolume at the tested moisture content.5.6 Test Equipment TolerancesTests in accordance withthis specification are to be conducted u

39、sing a machine orapparatus calibrated in accordance with Practices E4.6. Mechanical Testing6.1 Uniform Vertical Load TransferThe uniform verticalload transfer capability of the rim board assembly is basedupon the X-orientation compressive capacity of the rim boardillustrated in Fig. 2. As specified

40、in 7.1, the rim board verticalload capacity shall be determined based upon the lower of adirect test or calculation. Section 6.1.2 outlines the test used todirectly establish the capacity. Section 6.1.3 describes testingneeded to establish the X-orientation compression strength andstiffness of the m

Thequalified compression perpendicular-to-grain capacity of a propr

47、ietary floor sheathing is permitted to be used in lieu of this value for specific applications that combine therim board with the proprietary floor sheathing product.D7672 114Section 6.1.4 describes an alternative weak-axis flatwise bend-ing test that can be used to determine the X-orientation stiff

48、nessin lieu of an axial measurement.6.1.1 ConditioningThe rim board material tested in 6.1.2,6.1.3, and 6.1.4 shall be conditioned to equilibrium moisturecontent prior to testing under standardized atmospheric condi-tions of 68 6 11F (20 6 6C) and 65 6 5 % relative humidity.Alternatively, material t

49、ested in accordance with 6.1.2 ispermitted to be tested “as received” and without supplementalconditioning provided that the higher load factor of 7.1.1 isused for design load development.6.1.2 Direct Test of Uniform Vertical Load Transfer:6.1.2.1 Sample SizesThe sample sizes shall be sufficientto permit estimation of a population mean with 5 % precisionand 75 % confidence. As shown in Fig. 3, the specimen length(L direction of Fig. 2) shall be a minimum of 12 in. (30 cm).For rectangular rim board products, a minimum of ten speci-mens of each depth and thickness shall
