3、s serve in multiple structural capacities, including: providing floor closure anddiaphragm attachment, transferring vertical and in-plane lateral loads, restricting out-of-plane rotationand lateral translation at the ends of the floor joists, providing deck ledger attachment, and spanningwall openin
4、gs as a header material. Rim board products, which serve a principal role as a componentintegrated within a rim board assembly, can vary by wood species, size, shape, and type. Rim boardproducts and assemblies require evaluation of their mechanical properties, physical properties, andtheir response
5、to end use environments. Procedures established in this Specification provide a meansto test rim board products and assemblies, to judge their acceptability, and to establish allowabledesign capacities.1. Scope1.1 This specification provides procedures for testing andestablishing the structural capa
6、cities of proprietary rim boardproducts and assemblies for use in light-frame wood construc-tion using I-joist or structural composite lumber joist framing.This specification does not apply to commodity rim boardproducts.1.2 This specification was developed in light of currentlymanufactured panel, s
7、tructural composite lumber, and pre-fabricated I-joist rim board products as defined in 3.2. Mate-rials that do not conform to the definitions of 3.2 are beyondthe scope of this specification.1.3 Fire safety, sound transmission, building envelopeperformance, and cutting/notching attributes of rim bo
8、ardproducts and assemblies fall outside the scope of this specifi-cation.1.4 This specification primarily considers end use in dryservice conditions, such as most protected framing members,where the equilibrium moisture content for solid-sawn lumberis less than 16 %.1.5 This specification provides m
9、ethods to establish “allow-able stress” design resistances for use with the National DesignSpecification for Wood Construction (NDS). Derivation ofdesign resistances from the test data in accordance with “loadand resistance factor design” or “limit states design” arebeyond the scope of this specific
10、ation.1.6 Quality control requirements are outside the scope ofthis Specification.1.7 The performance of a rim board product will be affectedby the constituent wood species, geometry, adhesive, andproduction parameters. Therefore, rim board products pro-duced by each individual manufacturer shall be
11、 evaluated todetermine their product properties, regardless of the similarityin characteristics to products produced by other manufacturers.1.8 Where a manufacturer produces product in more thanone facility, each production facility shall be evaluated inde-pendently. For additional production facili
12、ties, any revisions tothe full qualification program in accordance with this specifi-cation shall be approved by an accredited, independent quali-fying agency.1.9 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. These capacities shall bepermitted to be based upon the material properties establishedin 4.4 and the relevant design provisions
20、 of the NDS. Thein-plane lateral load capacity of the rim board assembly shallbe empirically established as outlined in this Specification. Ifthe rim board assembly with a rectangular wood-based rimboard is to be additionally qualified to support an exterior deckledger, then deck ledger fastener att
21、achments must also bedeveloped. The procedure outlined in this Specification shallbe permitted as a means for the qualification of deck ledgerattachments. Alternative deck ledger attachment qualificationprocedures shall also be permitted provided that they considerall potential failure modes, includ
22、ing deck ledger splittingperpendicular-to-grain.4.4 Product Specific Requirements :4.4.1 I-joist Rim Board ProductsI-joist rim board productsmust be qualified as an I-joist framing material in accordancewith Specification D5055, have a minimum flange width of 1.5in. (38 mm), and a minimum manufactur
23、ed length of 8 ft. (2.4m). I-joists with sawn lumber flanges shall have establishedfastener capacities into the face and edge that comply with theprovisions of the NDS. I-joists with structural compositelumber flanges shall have fastener capacities established inaccordance with Specification D5456.
24、Deck ledger attachmentsto I-joist rim board products fall outside the scope of thisspecification.4.4.2 Rectangular Wood-Based Rim BoardsRectangularwood-based rim board products shall have a minimum thick-ness of 1.0 in. (25 mm) and a minimum manufactured length of8 ft. (2.4 m). Additionally, they sh
25、all satisfy the following.4.4.2.1 Structural Composite LumberStructural compos-ite lumber rim board products shall be made from a materialqualified in accordance with Specification D5456. The axialtension and compression capacities need not be qualified forrim board applications unless the product w
26、ill be permitted tobe used as a drag strut or diaphragm chord. SCL rim boardproducts shall have fastener capacities into the edge and faceestablished in accordance with Specification D5456. Where aSpecification D5456 test method requires minimum specimendimensions that exceed the product thickness,
27、testing the rimboard with its actual thickness shall be permitted.4.4.2.2 Proprietary Plywood and Oriented Strand BoardProprietary plywood and oriented strand board rim boardproducts shall be initially qualified in accordance with PS-1 orPS-2. In addition, when used as a structural header, theedgewi
28、se bending performance of proprietary plywood andoriented strand board rim board products shall be evaluated inaccordance with the Specification D5456 requirements forlaminated veneer lumber or oriented strand lumber, respec-tively. This evaluation shall include, but is not limited to,relevant consi
29、derations applicable to edgewise bending, suchas edgewise flexure, shear, and bearing design loadestablishment, duration of load, volume effects, moisturecontent, etc. The axial tension and compression capacities neednot be qualified in accordance with Specification D5456 forrim board applications u
30、nless the product will be used as a dragstrut or diaphragm chord. Where a Specification D5456 speci-fied test method requires minimum specimen dimensions thatexceed the product thickness, testing the rim board with itsactual thickness shall be permitted. Qualification5.1 GeneralThis section describes procedures, both em-pirical and analytical, for
32、initial qualification of the structuralcapacities of rim board products and assemblies. Qualificationis required for typical details of rim board application sincethey are used commonly and influence structural capacities.5.2 Qualification ProcessRim board products shall betested in accordance with
33、Section 6 and evaluated in accor-dance with Section 7. The allowable design values anddurability targets shall comply with the limitations specified byTable 1.5.2.1 When deck ledger attachments are qualified for rect-angular wood-based rim board products using the procedureoutlined in this specifica
34、tion, they shall comply with thelimitations specified in Table 2.5.2.2 When a manufacturer chooses not to establish aconcentrated vertical load capacity in accordance with theprovisions 6.3 and 7.3, then squash blocks or alternativedetailing provisions shall be provided to address concentratedload t
35、ransfer through the rim board assembly.5.3 SamplingSamples for qualification testing shall berepresentative of the population being evaluated. When amodification to the manufacturing process results in a reduc-tion in properties, new qualification testing is required. Sam-pling of the test material
36、shall be done in accordance with theapplicable portions of Section 3, “Statistical Methodology,” ofPractice D2915.5.4 WitnessingQualification tests shall be conducted orwitnessed by a qualified agency in accordance with Section 8.All test results are to be certified by an accredited, independentqual
37、ifying agency.5.5 Moisture Content and DensityMoisture content shallbe measured and reported for each rim board product specimentested in the qualification program in accordance with TestMethods D4442. The moisture content of other assemblycomponents does not need to be determined. It shall bepermit
38、ted to determine the moisture content for I-joist rimboard products as either the moisture content of the flanges orthe full cross-section. Specific gravity or product density shallbe measured and reported for rectangular rim board products.Specific gravity shall be determined in accordance with Tes
39、tMethods D2395. Product density shall be reported based uponthe specimen weight divided by the specimen volume at thetested moisture content.5.6 Test Equipment TolerancesTests in accordance withthis specification are to be conducted using a machine orapparatus calibrated in accordance with Practices
40、 E4.6. Mechanical Testing6.1 Uniform Vertical Load TransferThe uniform verticalload transfer capability of the rim board assembly is basedupon the X-orientation compressive capacity of the rim boardillustrated in Fig. 2. As specified in 7.1, the rim board verticalload capacity shall be determined ba
41、sed upon the lower of adirect test or calculation. Section 6.1.2 outlines the test used todirectly establish the capacity. Section 6.1.3 describes the testto establish the X-orientation compression strength of thematerial for the calculation. The X-orientation stiffness shall bedetermined using the
