Scope1.1 The purpose of this guide is to provide guidance in theselection of a suitable waterproofing membrane within avegetative roof system.

3、The guide offers various options forreviewing the membrane installation during and upon comple-tion of the installation and prior to the vegetative componentsbeing installed. This guide applies to membranes that do or donot require UV protection. For the purpose of this guide, thesupporting structur

4、e and roof deck are assumed to be mechani-cally and structurally sound and will accept the weight of thevegetative roof system including the membrane, insulation, andother roofing/waterproofing components including all compo-nents related to the vegetative layers as well as the requireddesign loads.

5、 Slope to drain at the membrane level is preferredand should be included where possible. Providing a replace-ment or a re-cover vegetative roofing system on an existingbuilding may require that the support structure be reinforced sothat it can safely support the additional weight of the vegetativero

6、of system and also provide the minimum live load capacityrequired by the building code.1.2 Design criteria associated with the vegetative portionsof the system are beyond the scope of this guide. All new compo-nents are used to construct the roofing/waterproofing system.Performance and service requirements of the vegetated roof areaddressed in the building design.5.1.1.1 Repla

18、cement (Total)Removal of existing roof sys-tem and all roof system components (roof membrane, coverboard, insulation, vapor retarder, support panels, etc.) down tothe supporting deck and replacing with new vegetative roofsystem and vegetative roof system components. Total replace-ment allows for an

19、evaluation of the roof deck and structure todetermine if additional repairs, structural enhancements, orreplacement are needed to accommodate the new vegetativeroof system.5.1.1.2 Replacement (Partial)Removal of existing roofmembrane system. Existing roof system components below themembrane, such as

20、 cover boards, insulation, vapor barrier, etc.,may be left in place if determined to meet the requirements forthe newly installed system. A thorough assessment of thosecomponents left in place should be carried out to determinetheir condition. Particular attention should be given to theirsecurement

21、and wind uplift resistance. All damaged, moisturecontaminated, and deteriorated components should be removedand replaced with new components.5.1.2 Re-coverA new waterproofing membrane is in-stalled over the existing membrane system. A thorough evalu-ation of the existing roof system, decking and str

22、ucture shouldbe performed to determine that it is suitable for the newvegetative roof system. A series of test cuts, together withnon-destructive moisture methods such as infrared thermogra-phy and nuclear moisture scanning, can be used to examineroofs for wet areas. All damaged, moisture contaminat

23、ed anddeteriorated components should be removed and replaced withnew.6. Vegetative Roofing Membrane and System Attributes6.1 Vegetative waterproofing membranes have different re-quirements than membranes intended to be exposed in-servicedue to the fact the membrane will be buried under thecomponents

24、 of the vegetative layers, subject to a moist,microbial environment, and not readily accessible for inspec-tion and maintenance. The service life of the waterproofingmembrane may be influenced by the type of material, thethickness of the membrane, and the method of attachment.Refer to the flow chart

25、 in Fig. 1 for assistance in choosing thewaterproofing membrane.6.2 Methods of Membrane Securement for VegetativeRoofsSee Table 1.6.3 Vegetative waterproofing membranes will more likelyhave more water retained above the membrane, and be moreoften in contact with damp materials, than roofs with expos

26、edmembranes. Waterproofing membranes used in vegetativeroofing systems should be capable of withstanding hydrostaticpressure as well as resisting absorption of water, water vapordiffusion, deterioration from contact with damp materials ormoisture for long periods of time.NOTE 1If a loose laid waterp

27、roofing membrane utilizes an integrallybonded reactive layer to the underside of the waterproofing membrane, thereactive material layer may be excluded from this absorption property.6.4 The vegetative waterproofing membrane should be pro-tected from root penetration at any point including intomembra

28、ne laps and seams. Some waterproofing membranessystems have the ability to block root penetration, while otherwaterproofing membranes will require an additional sheet toprovide protection from root penetration. Any waterproofingmembrane employed as a root barrier should comply with FLLor ANSI/SPRI V

29、R-1 requirements for acceptable root barriers.6.5 Vegetative waterproofing membranes may be exposed tovarious chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicidesand should be resistant to these chemicals. The waterproofingmembrane should also be resistant to mold, fungal, andbiological growth.

30、6.6 Waterproofing membranes that may be exposed to theelements (not covered with vegetation or ballast) should berated for the required wind and fire exposures and be formu-lated for exposure to the elements.7. Quality Assurance7.1 Visual and physical inspections of the waterproofingmembrane should

31、be scheduled during installation as well asprior to the installation of the vegetative components. Theinspections may be conducted by one or all of the following; atrained monitor, the designer or the roof membrane supplier.Verify that the waterproofing membrane is installed in accor-dance with the

32、written specifications, details, and submittals.7.2 Along with the visual and physical inspections addi-tional methods of leak detection are recommended beforecovering the membrane, such as flood testing or electronic leakdetection. Some types of membranes require adding metalcomponents or metallic

33、primer coating in order to work withELD.7.2.1 Flood TestsFlood testing should be carried out inconformance with Guide D5957. With a loose laid or mechanically attached membrane, it is suggested to use a containmentmechanism under the waterproofing membrane to isolate or prevent lateral water migration.
