Terminology3.1 DefinitionsTerms and abbreviations as described inTerminologies F 412 and D 1600, respectively, shall apply inthis guide. General terminology pertaining to roof drains asdescribed in ANSI/
、ASME A112.6.4 and ASME A112.6.9 shallalso apply in this guide.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 crown, nthe elevation of the top of a pipe inner wall.3.2.2 drain, nany pipe which carries rain water, wastewater or waterborne wastes in a building drainage system.3.2.3 drainage s
、ystem, nincludes all the piping withinpublic or private premises, which conveys sewage, rain water,or other liquid wastes to a legal point of disposal. It does notinclude the mains of public sewer treatment or disposal plants.3.2.4 siphonic roof drain, na roof drain with a fixeddevice allowing water
、 to enter without the ingress of air thatsustains a negative differential fluid head within the pipesystem thereby inducing flow without pipe gradient (pitch).4. Significance and Use4.1 The information provided in this standard guide isintended for use by designers and specifiers of siphonic roofdra
、inage systems and their related components. Specifically, this guide addresses the use and limitations of plastic pipe andfittings in siphonic roof drainage systems where internaloperating pressures are typically sub-atmospheric.5. Procedure5.1 GeneralRefer to the governing plumbing code (forexample,
、 IPC, UPC) to determine if plastic pipe and fittings arepermitted for building roof drainage systems in the projectjurisdiction. When permitted, select the appropriate material aslisted in the plumbing code that is approved for roof drainageapplications. Use of plastic pipe materials not approved by
、 thegoverning code must be approved by the local authority havingjurisdiction. Regardless of material approval, use plastic pipematerials only when not prohibited by fire resistance require-ments of the governing building code (that is, NFPA 5000,IBC, UPC). Pipe materials must also meet the fire res
、istiverequirements as specified in the building code and as deter-mined by Test Method E84.5.1.1 Specific types of PVC pipe appropriate for siphonicroof drainage systems include, but are not limited to: Specifi-cations D 2665, D 2949, and D 3034. When pipe diameters of212-in. (64-mm) must be specifi
、ed, Specification D 1785 plainend pressure pipe may be used as it shares the same manufac-turing standards as Specification D 2665.5.1.2 Specific types of ABS pipe include but are not limitedto: D 2282, D 2661, and D 2751.5.1.3 Specific types of PE pipe include but are not limitedto: D 2104, D 2447,
、 D 3350, and F 714.5.2 Pipe Wall Thickness and CompositionRefer to thegoverning plumbing code for the pipe wall thicknesses speci-fied for approved pipe materials. Cellular-core plastic pipe (forexample, Specifications F 628 and F 891) should be avoidedunless the respective pipe product manufacturer
、 can certify bytesting that the pipe product can withstand full vacuuminternally without collapse. Generally, solid wall plastic pipe ofwall thickness of Schedule 40 or greater (including theequivalent SDR thickness) is adequate for siphonic roof drainsystem sub-atmospheric pressure regimes. Pipe wa
、ll thick-nesses less than Schedule 40 should not be specified.5.3 Hangers, Supports and BracingRefer to the govern-ing plumbing code for pipe support requirements. If localcodes do not address pipe support, support plastic pipe everyfour feet on center and at every change in direction. Braceplastic
、pipe with lateral restraints every thirty feet on centerand at every change in direction for hanger rods longer than 18inches.5.4 Thermal Displacement and Expansion Fittings:5.4.1 The normal mode of thermal transition in siphonicroof drainage systems is typically from room temperature to aminimum of
、 about 40F (4.4C) resulting in an overallcontraction of plastic piping in siphonic roof drainage systems. This occurs generally when the warm pipe in a heated buildingis filled with a cold rain. Therefore, a total temperaturedifference of 50F (28C) shall be assumed in calculatingoverall changes in pi
、pe length due to thermal contraction.5.4.2 Obtain the rate of thermal expansion from pipe manu-facturer data as determined by Test Method D 696.Intheabsence of manufacturer data, use the following rates asexpressed in ft/ft/F (cm/cm/C). ABS: 5.7 3 10-5(10.3 310-5); PVC: 3.0 3 10-5(5.2 3 10-5); HDPE:
、 10.0 3 10-5(18.03 10-5).5.4.3 Specify appropriate telescopic expansion fittings toaccount for pipe thermal displacement. This is particularlyimportant for pipe sections that pass through fire rated wallswhere movement can pull apart fire stopping assemblies. Suchtelescoping expansion joints must be
、 able to withstand negativeinternal pressure without air infiltration. Expansion joints usedin pump suction applications are recommended5.5 Fire Stopping:5.5.1 Plastic piping passing through fire rated walls andfloors must be fire stopped with appropriate and approved firestopping assemblies as test
、ed and certified under Test MethodE 814 (ANSI/UL 1479). Other fire resistive joint systems mustbe installed and inspected in accordance with Test MethodE 1966 and Practice E 2393. Fire stop assemblies should beinstalled by qualified personnel as specified in ANSI/ASMEA112.20.2.5.5.2 Penetrations at
、fire rated penetrations should betreated as anchor points for the pipe system when determiningthe placement of expansion joints to prevent thermal displace-ment at these locations.5.6 Connection to Roof DrainsRefer to ANSI/ASMEA112.6.9 for information related to the method(s) of connec-tion of pipin
、g to siphonic roof drain outlets. In general, athreaded connection is preferred by means of an appropriatethread by socket adaptor coupling.5.7 Roughness Value:5.7.1 Energy loss calculations for siphonic roof drainagesystems should be based on the absolute roughness value forthe specified pipe mater
、ial. Evaluation of system performancefor both the “new” and the “aged” condition of the pipe innerwall is recommended.F20210625.7.2 For the “new” pipe condition, an absolute roughnessvalue of 0.000005 ft (0.00152 mm) is recommended.5.7.3 For the “aged” pipe condition an absolute roughnessvalue of 0.
、00002 ft (0.0061 mm) is recommended.5.8 Reducers and Increasers:5.8.1 The increase or reduction of pipe diameter in verticalorientations may be provided by either concentric or eccentricreducer fittings.5.8.2 The increase of pipe diameter in horizontal orienta-tions should be provided with eccentric
、 reducer fittings withthe “flat” side of the fitting oriented with the crown of the pipe(that is, match crowns).5.9 Inspection:5.9.1 Verify the pipe and fitting specification(s) of theinstalled pipe to ensure the specified pipe product and wallthickness have been installed.5.9.2 Ensure piping has be
、en supported and braced asspecified by the designer.5.9.3 Verify that specified expansion fittings and fire stop-ping assemblies have been installed.5.9.4 Verify that piping has been connected to all roofdrains.6. Test Methods6.1 GeneralThere are no operational test methods usedfor installed siphoni
、c roof drainage systems. Only pipe integ-rity testing by hydrostatic pressure is necessary.6.2 Hydrostatic System Testing:6.2.1 At a minimum, pressure test the drainage systempiping in accordance with the procedure(s) in the governingplumbing code for drainage systems.6.2.2 The designer may specify
、a pressure test method morestringent than the plumbing code minimum as operatingpressures necessitate.6.2.3 Do not use compressed air for the pressure testing ofplastic piping systems.7.
