3、ecification covers the general requirements andtests for braided, rope, and wick fiberglass packing used forboiler, furnace, and other high-temperature equipment seals forservice temperatures up to 1000F (538C).2. Terminology3.1 braided fiberglassA braid constructed of continuousfiberglass strands.3.2 pliedA yarn product produced by twisting togethertwo or more ends of single fiberglass yarns.3.3 strandAn ordered assemblage of

5、 textile fibers havinga high ratio of length to diameter and normally used as a unit,including slivers, rovings, single yarns, plied yarns, cords,braids, ropes, and so forth.3.4 yarnPortion of fiberglass reduced to thread to obtain afine and thin strand.3.5 lotUnless otherwise specified herein, a lo

6、t shouldconsist of all finished packing of one type and size produced ina continuous run or at the same time under essentially the sameconditions. The sampling unit should be one spool, reel, or coilof packing as necessary to enable performance of the requiredexaminations or tests.4. Classification4

7、.1 ClassificationThe material shall be of the followingtypes as specified (see 5.1):Type IWickType IIRopeType IIIBraided5. Ordering Information5.1 Acquisition RequirementsAcquisition documentsmust specify the following:(a) Title, number, and date of this specification;(b) Type, size, and weight of s

8、pool, reel, or coil required(see Section 7);(c) Marking requirements (see Section 15);(d) Packaging requirements (see Section 16);(e) Performance requirements; and(f) Inspection, testing, and certification of the materialshould be agreed upon between the purchaser and the supplieras part of the purc

9、hase contract (see Sections 12 and 14).6. Materials and Manufacture6.1 MaterialThe material shall be a continuous, high-density-type ETG fiberglass material (see Specification D 578).Asbestos and components containing asbestos are prohibited.6.2 ConstructionThe packing shall be composed oftwisted pl

10、ied strands made into a braided packing or laid upinto the general form of a wick or a loosely twisted ropeaccording to the manufacturers design. If a core is used, itshall be of the same material and construction.7. Dimensions and Tolerances7.1 Type I Wick PackingUnless otherwise specified (see5.1)

11、, the packing shall come in 13-lb (5.9-kg) or 25-lb(11.3-kg) spools, reels, or coils in the sizes listed in Table 1.7.2 Type II Rope PackingUnless otherwise specified (see5.1), the packing shall come in 25-lb (11.3-kg) or 50-lb(22.7-kg) spools, reels, or coils in the sizes listed in Table 2.7.3 Type

12、 III Braided PackingUnless otherwise specified(see 5.1), the packing shall come in 25-lb (11.3-kg) or 50-lb(22.7-kg) spools, reels, or coils in the sizes listed in Table 3.8. Workmanship8.1 WorkmanshipThe packing should be free from extra-neous material and visible defects that may affect its servic

Test Methods11.1 MaterialMaterial shall be tested in accordance withSpecification D 578.11.2 SizeMaterial shall be measured using a flexiblemeasuring tape such as the one described in Test MethodsD 4268 and shall be in acc

17、ordance with the size specified inTable 1, Table 2,orTable 3.11.3 SplicesUnless otherwise agreed upon, there shall beallowed a maximum of two splices per unit with no pieceshorter than 10 ft in length.11.4 WeightMaterial shall be weighed in accordance withTable 1, Table 2,orTable 3 using a weighing

18、scale, accurate to60.25 related to the real division of the graduated line. Thisvalue is expressed in mass unit of:(a) the difference between the corresponding values ofmarks of the graduated line and(b) the difference between two consecutive indications fordigital indication.12. Inspection and Test

19、ing12.1 Inspection and testing of the material should be agreedupon between the purchaser and the supplier as part of thepurchase contract (see 5.1).13. Rejection13.1 Materials that fail to conform to the requirements ofthis specification shall be rejected. Rejection should be re-ported to the produ

20、cer or supplier promptly and in writing. Incase of dissatisfaction with the results of testing, the producermay make claim for a rehearing or provide for third partytesting.14. Certification14.1 When specified in the purchase order or contract, thepurchaser shall be furnished certification that samp

21、les repre-senting each lot have been either tested or inspected as directedin this specification and the requirements have been met. Whenspecified in the purchase order or contract, a report of the testresults shall be furnished (see 5.1).15. Product Marking15.1 MarkingFor commercial shipment, marki

22、ng shouldbe in accordance with accepted industry practices or asrequired in the purchase contract (see 5.1).15.1.1 When specified, a part-numbering system shall beused in accordance with Appendix X1.16. Packaging16.1 Commercial PackagingCommercial packagingshould be in accordance with Practice D 395
