3、 of the Department of Defense.1. Scope1.1 This practice covers procedures for safe handling ofsolvent cements, primers, and cleaners used in joining thermo-plastic pipe and fittings. The procedures are general ones andinclude safeguards against hazards of fire and precautions forprotection of person
4、nel from breathing of vapors and contactwith skin or eyes.1.2 The word cleaner, when used in this practice, refers tochemical cleaners.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. 7、 used to removeforeign matter from the surface of plastic pipe and fittings.3.2.2 primeran organic solvent, or blend of solvents,which enhances adhesion, applied to plastic pipe and fittingsprior to application of a solvent cement.3.2.3 solvent cementan adhesive made by dissolving aplastic resin or
8、compound in a suitable solvent or mixture ofsolvents. The solvent cement dissolves the surfaces of the pipeand fittings to form a bond between the mating surfacesprovided the proper cement is used for the particular materialsand proper techniques are followed.4. Safe Handling4.1 A number of the solv
9、ents contained in cements, primers,and cleaners are classified as airborne contaminants andflammable and combustible liquids. These products generallyare composed of solvent blends which vary with manufactur-ers. Follow precautions given herein to prevent fire and injuryto personnel. Specific safety
10、 information on a particular ce-ment, primer, or cleaner may be found on the container label orin the Material Safety Data Sheet available from the manufac-turer.4.2 Avoid prolonged breathing of solvent vapors. Whenpipe and fittings are being joined in partially enclosed areas,use a ventilating devi
11、ce in such a manner as to maintain a safelevel of vapor concentration with respect to toxicity4,5andflammability6in the breathing area. Select ventilating devicesand locate them so as not to provide a source of ignition toflammable vapor mixtures.4.3 Keep cements, primers, and cleaners away from all
12、sources of ignition, heat, sparks, and open flame.64.4 Keep containers of cements, primers, and cleanerstightly closed except when the product is being used. Thecontainer type shall be in accordance with CFR Title 49.Container labeling shall conform with the requirements of theFederal Hazardous Subs

Empty thereceptacle daily with proper consideration for its flammablehazard.4.6 Most of the solvents used in pipe cements, primers, andcleaners can be considered eye irritants and contact with theeye should be avoided as it may ca
18、use eye injury. Proper eyeprotection and the use of chemical goggles or face shields isadvisable where the possibility of splashing exists in handlingthese products. In case of eye contact, flush with plenty ofwater for 15 min and call a physician immediately.4.7 Avoid contact with the skin. Wear pr
19、oper gloves imper-vious to and unaffected by the solvents when contact with theskin is likely. Application of the primers, cleaners, or solventcements with rags and bare hands is not recommended.Brushes, daubers, and other suitable applicators can be usedeffectively for applying these products, thus
20、 avoiding skincontact. Dispose of used applicators in the same manner as therags (see 4.5). In the event of contact, remove contaminatedclothing immediately and wash skin with soap and water.
