Significance and Use3.1 This test method is designed to compare related lami-nated composite gasket materials under controlled conditionsand their short-time compressibility and recovery at roomtemperature. It measu

7、res compressibility with a matched pairof opposing upper and lower penetrators which provide betterprecision and bias than methods using an upper penetrator anda lower anvil. It is difficult to prepare undistorted test speci-mens from laminated composite gasket materials which willlay flat on an anv

8、il. Also, with many composites having rigidinner layers the load on the upper penetrator is distributed overthe bottom anvil area resulting in a lower than actual com-pressibility reading. This test method may be used as a routinetest method when agreed upon between the purchaser and theproducer.4.

9、Apparatus4.1 The testing machine4shall consist of the followingcomponents.4.1.1 PenetratorsA matched pair of opposing steel cylin-ders (within 6 0.025 mm (0.001 in.) specified for the type ofmaterial being tested, with the cylinder ends hardened andground. Penetrator diameters for various types of l

10、aminatedcomposite gasket materials are shown in Table 1.4.1.2 DialAn indicating dial, or dials, graduated in 0.025mm (0.001 in.) to show the thickness of the specimen duringthe test. Readings shall be estimated to the nearest 0.0025 mm(0.0001 in.).4.1.3 Preload, shall include the weight of the penet

11、ratoritself and added weights to give the value specified within 61 %. A 22.2-N (5-lbf) preload shall be used.4.1.4 Loading DeviceA device for applying a specifiedmajor load to the upper end of the penetrator, which mayconsist of an arrangement of dead weights, a hydraulic cylin-der, an air cylinder

12、, or any other device capable of applying themajor load at a slow uniform rate and to an accuracy of 6 1%.The major load shall be in addition to the specified preload.Major loads for various types of laminated composite gasketmaterials are shown in Table 1.5. Test Specimen5.1 The test specimen may b

13、e either circular or rectangularin shape. The thickness shall bethat of the laminated composite gasket. Take care that thespecimen is flat, especially around the planned contact point ofthe opposing

17、penetrators.6. Conditioning6.1 When all nonmetallic layers of the laminated compositeare the same type, condition in accordance with that type asshown in Table 1.6.2 When the nonmetallic layers of the laminated compositeare of different types, the specimen shall be conditioned for 22h in a controlle

18、d-humidity room or in a closed chamber of airat 21 to 30C (70 to 85F) and 50 to 55 % relative humidity. Inall cases where testing is conducted outside the area ofspecified humidity, specimens shall be removed from thechamber one at a time as needed.6.3 Other conditioning may be as agreed upon betwee

19、n theproducer and the user.7. Temperature of Test7.1 The test shall be conducted with both the specimen andthe apparatus at a temperature of 21 to 30C (70 to 85F).8. Procedure8.1 Determine the amount of deflection of the penetrator ateach of the loads used in the test with no specimens present.Add t

20、he absolute value of this penetrator deflection to thethickness under total load M in 10.1 to obtain a correctedreading. The values are machine constants which may vary fordifferent instrument designs.8.2 Center the test specimen upon the bottom penetrator,and apply the preload, guiding the top pene

21、trator in its descentso that it remains parallel to the surface of the bottompenetrator. Maintain for a period of 15 s, and record thepreloaded thickness of the specimen. Immediately apply themajor load in a slow uniform manner so that the total load isattained within 10 s. Maintain the total load f

22、or 60 s, and recordthe thickness of the specimen. Immediately remove the majorload, and after a period of 60 s, record the thickness of thespecimen under the original preload. This is the recoveredthickness.9. Number of Tests9.1 A minimum of three tests shall be run on separatespecimens taken from t

23、he same sample and the results aver-aged.10.
