(254 mm),6 1 in. (25.4 mm).6.2 The load shall be applied using either calibr

、ated weightsor a mechanical device in conjunction with a calibrated loadcell.6.2.1 The use of calibrated weights requires that weightplacement be accurate to assure that the load applicationcentroid is coincident with the boundaries defined and meetsthe requirements as given in 6.4. Caution should b

、e exercisedfor operator protection with the use of weights in case ofslippage or premature failure.6.2.2 The use of a mechanical device such as a tensiletesting machine or hydraulic power, in combination withpulleys, fulcrums or bearings to re-direct forces, requires theuse of a calibrated load cell

、 attached adjacent to the test subjectto account for friction losses.6.3 Calibrated deflection measuring devices (such as dialindicators or optical laser) shall be used to measure movementof the test subject under load. The accuracy of the measuringdevices shall be at within 0.010 in. (0.254 mm) and

、 repeatablewithin 0.005 in. (0.127 mm). The devices shall measuremovement parallel to the direction of the applied load and shallbe mounted in such a manner to eliminate deflection of the testapparatus and be placed, as a minimum, as follows:6.3.1 There shall be at least two measurements taken at th

、eload; one on each side and 6 in. (152.4 mm) from the center ofload application.6.3.2 A deflection measurement shall be taken at two pointsfurthest from the mounting pole, one on each side symmetricalwith the test subject.6.3.3 A deflection measurement shall be taken at two points6 in. The edges of the loadplate adjacent to the test subject shall be de-burred with0.015/0.030 in. (0.381/0.762 mm) radius to reduce dama

、ge tothe test subject by sharp corners.Asingle layer of thin maskingtape may be applied to the surface of the load plate contactingthe test subject to reduce scratching and improve friction.NOTE 1Load attachment structure must be secured to this load platetherefore fabrication by welding must assure

、 that the plate remain flat andfree of distortion.6.4.2 Handclimbers (climbing aids) shall have the loadapplied along the centroid of the supporting structure furthestfrom the test pole (which by design must be capable of directlysupporting the users weight during normal use) by means of a4-in. (101

、.6-mm) wide steel plate or rigid shape of sufficientlength to horizontally span the width of the test subject.6.4.3 For two piece (stand/sit) climbing treestands withmovable non-rigid seats (such as mesh, slings, or similar) thatcan be slid forward or backward during normal use, twoadditional separa

、te tests shall be conducted on the seat. Thefirst test shall be conducted with the load applied to thecentroid of the non-rigid platform with the non-rigid platformlocated in its normal position, typically in the center of thesupporting structure, using the square plate in accordance with6.4.1. The

、second test shall be conducted with the load appliedalong the centroid of the supporting structure furthest from thetest pole, which by design must be capable of directlysupporting the users weight during normal use. (For example, the horizontal framing member of a treestand where the usermust suppor

(406.4-mm)wide area length of the supporting structure6.5 For fixed position treestands, the test shall be repeatedwith the load applied

、 to the seat and in accordance with 6.4.1,7.5 and 7.7. For climbing treestands in which the seat is notused during the climbing, that is, a handclimber or climbing aidis used, refer to Test Method F2531 for seat requirements.6.6 In addition to the platform ladder, tripod and climbingsticks shall hav

、e a minimum of two steps tested for static loadwith the load applied over a 3-in. (76.2-mm) wide portion ofthe step in the center of the step, or where a foot wouldinterface with the step.7. Procedure7.1 Read instructions accompanying the test subject toascertain the proper procedure for use and mou

、, may not besufficient in some cases for the subject to remain in position. Asmall band on the mounting pole may be necessary).7.2 By geometric means, determine the location of thecentroid of the platform area and mark accordingly. Place theload plate centerline coincident with the centroid of thepl

、atform.7.3 Determine if the test subject will deflect sufficientlyduring the test to allow the load plate to slip or shift. If so,provide auxiliary means such as clamps or stops to eliminatesideways movement of the load plate. The load must be appliedas given in 6.4 and must be continuously applied

、parallel to themounting pole throughout the entire test.7.4 Locate and mount deflection measurement devices, orreference points using optical laser, as given in 6.3.7.5 The initial load for beginning the test shall be one-fourthof the test subjects rated capacity. Example: a test subject witha rated

、 capacity of 400 lbs (882 kg) shall begin the test at a loadof 100 lbs (200 kg). Loads shall be increased by 25 %increments up to the test subjects rated capacity after whichthe load shall be increased to 150 %, 175 % and 200 % of therated capacity, respectively. After the load meets or exceeds thera

、ted capacity, it shall be returned to zero and checked foryielding.7.6 At each load value exceeding the rated capacity (testpoint), the load and all deflection measurements shall berecorded. The load shall then be removed and the deflectionmeasurements re-recorded. A note shall be made of anyF2126 0

、6 (2010)2measurement that does not return to within 0.200 in. (5.080mm) of its initial value. After the load is removed, all deflectionmeasurements shall be checked, and the test subject visuallyinspected for permanent deformations by yielding.7.7 The load shall incrementally increase until it is det

、er-mined that (1) a factor of safety of 2.0 has been met, or (2)permanent deformation (yielding) has occurred.8. Report8.1 Deflection readings shall be discarded only when acalibration change is discovered after readings have been madeor when improper operator techniques can be cited.8.2 Recording o

、f results shall include the following:8.2.1 Identification of test subject model, manufacturer, andrated capacity.8.2.2 Photograph of test subject.8.2.3 Photograph of test set-up (three views: side, top, andend).8.2.4 Load and deflection measurements at all test points.8.2.5 Verification of calibrat

、ion.8.2.6 Date of test.8.3 Determination of Factor of Safety:8.3.1 When yielding or permanent deformation has beenreached as given in 7.7, the corresponding load in pounds shallbe noted as the yield load.8.3.2 The factor of safety shall be calculated by dividing themanufacturers rated capacity of th

、e test subject into theresulting yield load. For example, rated capacity-300 lbs (661.4kg), yield load-630 lbs (1,388.9 kg); therefore the factor ofsafety is 630/300 or 2.10 (usually noted as 2.10 SF).8.3.3 The factor of safety must meet or exceed 2.0.8.4 Pass-Fail Criterion:8.4.1 A treestand is con

、sidered failed if it cannot supporttwice its rated load capacity without yielding or permanentdeformation. The deflection measurements can be used as anindication of permanent deformation but shall not be used aspass-fail criterion.8.4.2 If a treestand fails this test, the treestand and a copy ofthe

、 test data shall be returned to the manufacturer.9. Precision and Bias9.1 No statement is made about either the precision or biasof this test method for measuring load capacity since the resultmerely states whether there is conformance to the criteria forsuccess specified in the procedure.10.
