Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.INTRODUCTIONThis consumer safety specification is intended to address incidents reported by the U.S. ConsumerProduct Safety Commission (CPSC) relating to bedside

3、sleepers.In response to the incident data compiled by the CPSC, this consumer safety specification attemptsto minimize the hazards associated with these products from the following: (1) occupant retention, (2)structural integrity and product assembly, and (3) deficiency of consumer education regardi

4、ng productuse. This consumer safety specification is intended to deal with reasonably foreseeable use and misuseof the products. This consumer safety specification does not apply to products that are blatantlymisused, nor does it apply to products used by consumers in a careless manner that violate

5、normalpractice or disregard the instructions or warnings provided with the product, or both.1. Scope1.1 This consumer safety specification establishes perfor-mance requirements, test methods and marking requirements topromote safe use of bedside sleepers.1.2 This consumer safety specification is int

6、ended to mini-mize the risk of injury to an infant from the normal use andreasonably foreseeable misuse of a bedside sleeper.1.3 This consumer safety performance specification coversproducts intended to provide sleeping space for an infant up toapproximately 5 months of age (or when child begins to

7、pushup on hands and knees). These products are intended to besecured to the side of an adult bed for the purpose of having ababy sleep in close proximity to an adult.1.4 No bedside sleeper produced after the approval date ofthis consumer safety specification shall, either by label or othermeans, ind

8、icate compliance with the specification unless itcomplies with all of the requirements contained herein.1.5 This consumer safety performance specification is notintended to address incidents and injuries resulting fromalteration or unreasonable abuse or misuse of the product by achild or child care

9、provider.1.6 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.1.7 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to thetest method porti

12、3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 attachment system, nthe means used to attach thebedside sleeper to the adult bed.3.1.2 bedside sleeper, na rigid frame assembly that maybe combined with a fabric or mesh assembly, or both, used tofunction as sides, ends, or floor or a combination thereof, andthat is intended to

16、ned to convert the productinto a bedside sleeper and is intended to have a horizontal sleepsurface while in a rest (non-rocking) position.3.1.4 bedside sleeper accessory attachment components,nthe components that provide the means of attachment for abedside sleeper accessory to a play yard (see Fig.

17、 1).3.1.4.1 DiscussionFasteners used to permanently attachone or more components to each other such as but not limitedto screws and rivets are not considered accessory attachmentcomponents.3.1.5 fabric, nany woven, knit, coated, laminated, ex-truded or calendered flexible material that is intended t

18、o besewn, welded, heat sealed, or glued together as an assembly.3.1.6 manufacturers recommended use position, nanyposition that is presented as a normal, allowable, or acceptableconfiguration for use of the product by the manufacturer in anydescriptive or instructional literature.3.1.6.1 DiscussionT

19、his specifically excludes positionsthat the manufacturer shows in a like manner in its literature tobe unacceptable, unsafe or not recommended.3.1.7 multi-mode product, na unit that is designed andintended to be used in more than one mode (for example, a playyard, bassinet, changing table, hand held

21、he occupant.3.1.10 shell, na textile cover for bedside sleeper accessorythat incorporates structural elements such as tubing, perma-nently attached clips or hooks, or other elements which allowit to be suspended from the play yard frame.4. Calibration and Standardization4.1 All testing shall be cond

22、ucted on a concrete floor thatmay be covered with18 in. (3 mm) thick vinyl floor covering,unless test instructs differently.4.2 The product shall be completely assembled in accor-dance with the manufacturers instructions.4.3 No testing shall be conducted within 48 h of manufac-ture.4.4 The product t

23、o be tested shall be at an ambient tempera-ture of 73 6 9F (23 6 5C) for at least one hour beforetesting.All testing shall be conducted in this temperature range.4.5 All testing required by this consumer safety specifica-tion shall be conducted on the same unit in the order presentedin this specific

24、ation.5. Performance Requirements5.1 Prior to or immediately after testing to this consumersafety specification, the bedside sleeper must be tested toConsumer Safety Specification F2194. Multi-mode productsmust also be tested to each applicable standard. When testingto Consumer Safety Specification

25、F2194 the unit shall be freestanding, and not be secured to the test platform as dictatedelsewhere in this standard.5.1.1 The bassinet minimum side height shall be as requiredin Consumer Safety Specification F2194 with the exception ofa lowered side rail as permitted in 5.4.5.2 When the product is s

26、ecured to the Test Platform 2 from7.1.2 of Consumer Safety Specification F2085, per the manu-facturers recommended method, there shall be no more than12in. (13 mm) separation from the bed measured at any pointalong the length of the line of contact between the product andthe test platform.5.3 Produc

27、t Disengagement:5.3.1 The bedside sleeper shall not separate from the testplatform more than 1 in. (2.5 cm) at any point of attachment tothe test platform when tested in accordance with 6.1.1-6.1.3.5.3.2 The bedside sleeper may separate from the test plat-form more than 1 in. (2.5 cm) during applica

28、tion of the forcein 6.1.4 but shall not remain separated more than 1 in. (2.5 cm)after removal of the force.5.4 The bedside sleeper shall have a barrier around theentire perimeter of the occupant retention space. If a bedsidesleeper is equipped with a side or end portion which is loweror partially l

29、owers by any means, the height of the side rail inthe lowest position shall be no less than 4 in. (10.2 cm) whenmeasured from the top of the uncompressed bedside sleepermattress to the top of the lowered side rail, when the mattresssupport is in its highest position.5.4.1 Four-Inch Nest RationaleThe

30、 center of gravity (CG)of a child lying down on his/her side is roughly the centerlineof the body. Since maximum shoulder breadth for 3 to 5 montholds is 21.8 cm (8.6 in.) (Snyder, 1977), half of that is 10.9 cm(4.3 in.). Also, maximum hip breadth for the same age range is18.2 cm (7.2 in.), half of

31、which is 9.1 cm (3.6 in.). Assumingthat the CG lies approximately along the centerline of the bodyand the child is laying with one side flat on the mattress, theCG will likely lie roughly between 9 cm and 11 cm above themattress.5.5 If a bedside sleeper is equipped with a side or endportion which pa

32、rtially lowers by any means, it shall remainengaged and operative after testing as follows:FIG. 1 Example of Bedside Sleeper Accessory Attachment Com-ponentF2906 1325.5.1 Each single-action locking or latching device that isprovided to prevent folding shall require a minimum force of10 lbf (45 N) to

33、 activate the release mechanism when tested inaccordance with 6.2.5.5.2 Each double-action locking or latching device that isprovided to prevent folding shall require two distinct andseparate actions for release. There are no force requirementsfor double-action locking or latching devices.5.6 The be

34、dside sleeper must provide a means to be securedto an adult bed and the top rail designed to be adjacent to theadult bed shall be at or below the acceptable adult bed heightrange specified in the instructional literature.5.7 Bedside Sleeper Accessory Fabric Sided EnclosedOpeningsFor bedside sleeper

35、accessories, a completelybounded opening shall not be created that allows the completepassage of the torso probe (Fig. 2) when tested in accordancewith 6.3.5.8 Bedside Sleeper AccessoriesMissing Accessory At-tachment Components:5.8.1 Bedside sleeper accessories that have all accessoryattachment comp

36、onents permanently attached to the bedsidesleeper accessory, or by any permanent means prohibiting theirremoval from the bedside sleeper accessory, are exempt fromthe requirements in 5.8.2.5.8.2 Bedside sleeper accessories which require consumerassembly of accessory attachment component(s), and that

37、 canbe assembled and attached to the product with any accessoryattachment component(s) missing, shall meet either 5.8.2.1 or5.8.2.2 when each accessory attachment component not per-manently attached is removed.5.8.2.1 The bedside sleeper accessory shall collapse whenany part of the mattress pad cont

38、acts the bottom floor of theplay yard or is not able to support the 4.0 lbm test mass whentested to 6.4.5.8.2.2 The bedside sleeper accessory sleep surface shall tiltmore than 30 when tested to 6.4.6. Test Methods6.1 Product Disengagement Test Method:6.1.1 Assemble the bedside sleeper in the manufac

39、turersrecommended use position(s) utilizing Test Platform 2 fromConsumer Safety Specification F2085, subsection 7.1.2. Thefoundation of Test Platform 2 shall be placed in a commonmetal bed frame.NOTE 1The probe dimensions represent the torso diameter of a 5th percentile 0 to 2-month-old infant.FIG.

40、2 Torso ProbeF2906 1336.1.2 Apply 25 lbf (111 N) to the midpoint of a horizontalcross member closest in height to the attachment means on thebedside sleeper structure (manufacturer illustration), and in adirection most likely to dislodge the bedside sleeper from thetest platform. The load shall be a

41、pplied througha2by2in.(50by 50 mm) wood block gradually over 5 s and held for 10 s.Measure the maximum separation of the product from the topof the mattress of Test Platform 2 while the force is beingapplied.6.1.3 Apply 25 lbf (111 N) to one outside corner of theBedside Sleeper structure closest to

42、Test Platform 2 (manufac-turer illustration). Apply the force to the structure perpendicu-lar to the length of the bed within 2 in. (50 mm) of the topsurface of Test Platform 2 and in a direction most likely todislodge the bedside sleeper from the test platform. The loadshall be applied througha2by2

43、in.(50by50mm)wood blockgradually over 5 s and held for 10 s. Measure the separation ofthe product from Test Platform 2 at the height of the top of themattress on the bed while the force is being applied. Repeat onthe other outside corner of the products structure closest toTest Platform 2.6.1.4 Appl

44、y a 50 lbf (225 N) to each of the previously testedlocations without adjusting the product. Apply the force over aperiod of 5 s. After removing the force, measure the maximumseparation of the product from the Test Platform 2 at the heightof the top of the mattress.6.1.4.1 Product Disengagement Ratio

45、naleTests areneeded to insure product integrity and that a bedside sleeperproduct remains secured to the adult bed during foreseeable useand misuse of the product. The 25 lbf tests represent themaximum forces that an infant could apply to the product whilelocated inside of the sleeping area. The 50

46、lbf tests representthe maximum forces that an adult may exert on the bedsidesleeper product by rolling into the product while sleeping orsiblings pulling on the unit while attached to an adult bed. Testforces include a safety factor of 2 times the force.6.2 Folding Latch Test MethodWith the product

47、in themanufacturers recommended use position, gradually apply aforce of 10 lbf (45 N) to the locking mechanism in the directiontending to unlock it.6.3 Fabric Release Test Methods for Enclosed Openings:6.3.1 Assemble and place the bedside sleeper in the manu-facturers recommended use position. If th

48、e bedside sleeper hasa non-rocking locking mechanism, place the bedside sleeper innonrocking mode. For this test, the unit shall be free standing,and not be secured to the test platform as dictated elsewhere inthis standard.6.3.2 With the torso test probe attached to a force gauge,place the small en

49、d of the probe against the fabric on the insidewall of the product and between any structural elements in anylocations deemed most likely to fail without removing themattress.6.3.3 Apply a 20 lb (89 N) force to the probe over a periodof 5 s and hold for an additional 10 s.6.3.4 Upon completion of 6.3.3, without adjusting thefabric, evaluate any additional openings by repeating 6.3.2 andrepeat 6.3.3 at these additional locations.6.3.5 ShellIf the product has a shell, unfasten all fasteners,snaps, or both that are not required to suspend the shell to
