、ollowed in1971. The present revision supersedes that of1971, which is withdrawn. Few changes of technical significance have been found necessary, but the text has been brought into line with current BSI drafting policy. The main technical changes are as follows. a) Limits have been introduced for th

、e variation from the manufacturers stated nominal value of the branch angle of junctions. It is now permissible for the strength of junctions to be assessed from the test results for pipes produced in the same plant and using the same materials and process. Alternatively, short lengths of pipes, of

、not less than0.3m in length, may be made and tested for this purpose. b) In place of the clause on sampling for tests given in BS1196:1971, anappendix has been added giving advice on optional sampling and tests to be agreed between the manufacturer and purchaser. c) A marking clause has been added t

Attention is drawn to the need to install the pipes in accordance with the recommendations of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) Technical Note “Workmanship and materials for field drainage schemes”. A.2 Sampling for pipes representing junctions A.2.1 When junctions are made alonside pipes, the strength of the pipes se

A.2.2 When junctions are not made alongside pipes, six or more pipe lengths made to represent the junction consignment should be strength tested for each1000 junctions made (see4.3). A.3 Consignment compliance criteria If three or more of

、 either the pipes selected in accordance withA.1 or the pipe lengths made in accordance withA.2.2 fail to comply with this standard, the consignment represented by the samples should be deemed not to comply. If one or two of either the pipes selected in accordance withA.1 or the pipe lengths made in

、 accordance withA.2.2 fail to comply with this standard, a further six pipes should be selected or pipe lengths made in accordance withA.1 orA.2.2 as appropriate and the tests repeated. Failure of one of these pipes should be taken to indicate that the consignment fails to comply with the standard.

、NOTEFailure of a consignment of pipes would not of course preclude proof testing each of the remaining pipes to select those which comply with the standard. This procedure is not of course open where junctions are being assessed by testing representative pipes. Appendix B Crushing strength test B.1

、Apparatus B.1.1 General. The testing machine (see Figure 2) shall be substantial and rigid throughout, so that the distribution of the load is not affected appreciably by the deformation or yielding of any part. B.1.2 Supports. The supports for the bearers shall be rigid. B.1.3 Bearers. The bearers

、shall be centrally located on the supports and shall consist of metal or hard wood free from warps and twists. The rectangular cross section of the bearer shall be at least170mm 25mm. B.1.4 Bearing strips. The bearing strips shall consist of elastomeric material having a hardness of50 5 IRHD. The st

、rips shall be of rectangular cross section having a width of505mm and a thickness of not less than25mm nor more than40mm. The bearing strips shall be used with the50 5mm dimension in contact with the pipe. The two bottom strips shall be of equal thickness, parallel and spaced255mm apart. The length

、of the bearing strips shall be the full length of the pipe. Figure 2 Crushing testing machineBS1196:1989 4 BSI 11-1999 B.2 Procedure Support the pipe in a horizontal position on the two lower bearing strips parallel to its longitudinal axis, so that the plane of any permitted longitudinal deviation

、from straightness is horizontal. Apply the load to the upper support as shown in Figure 2: a) at a point equidistant from the ends of the pipe; b) along the length of the pipe barrel through the upper support, bearer and bearing strip; and c) in such a manner that the combination of support, bearer

、and bearing strip is free to rotate in a vertical plane through the longitudinal centre-lines of the top and bottom bearers. Apply the load without vibration or sudden shock and at a uniform rate of not greater than0.17kN/m of pipe per second until the pipe fails. Calculate the intensity of loading
