、 indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS1344-22:1994 BSI 07-1999 1 1 Scope This Part of BS 1344 describes a method of test for determining the resistance to sudden changes in temperature (thermal shock) of vitreous enamel finishes on fabricated sheet steel components, that are

、near to, or likely to be affected by, a source of heat. It is not applicable to cooking utensils which are covered in BS 1344-16:1975, or to cast iron components which are covered in BS 1344-1:1994. 2 Informative references This Part of BS 1344 refers to other publications that provide information o

、r guidance. Editions of these publications current at the time of issue are listed on the inside back cover, but reference should be made to the latest editions. 3 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of BS 1344 the following definitions apply. 3.1 vitreous enamel a substance resulting from sme

、lting or fritting of inorganic compounds to form a vitreous material fused or capable of being fused, in one or more layers, on to a metallic or other suitable base 3.2 thermal shock cycle the series of operations consisting of heating a test specimen to the agreed test temperature and quenching an

、agreed test area with water at a temperature of between 15 C and 25 C 3.3 test temperature the agreed temperature to which the specimen is heated before being quenched with water, which is50 C above the operating temperature when fitted to an appliance up to a maximum of 470 C, inclusive 3.4 damage

、any chipping or tension cracks in the enamel visible at a distance of 250 mm by normal sight 4 Principle The surface of a component or part of a component of a vitreous enamelled appliance is subjected to a series of thermal shock tests. In each test, it is heated, by either direct or radiant heat d

、epending on the heat source on the assembled appliance, to an agreed temperature above 200 C and then it is immediately quenched in water at 15 C to 25 C. 5 Apparatus 5.1 Heat source or sources, capable of heating the test specimen at the specified or agreed part of the test specimen to the agreed t

、emperatures, the source either providing direct heat or radiant heat as required. 5.2 Surface pyrometer, capable of measuring to an accuracy of 2 C. 5.3 Thermometer, to measure the temperature of the water. 6 Test specimens 6.1 Test specimens shall be unmodified enamelled sheets or cast iron compone

、nts. NOTECooking stove components of cast iron construction should be tested in accordance with the method described inBS1344-1:1994. 6.2 The specimens shall be representative of the entire consignment and the method of sampling shall be agreed between the parties to the test. 7 Procedure 7.1 The ar

、ea to be tested, and whether the whole or an agreed part of the test specimen is to be tested, either shall be determined in accordance with the applicable British Standard or other specification, or shall be agreed between the parties. 7.2 Using either a direct or radiant heat source, or both, acco

、rding to the heat source employed in the intended end use and by agreement between the parties, heat the area to be tested (see 7.1) to the test temperature 5%. The test temperature shall be at least 200 C and either shall be determined in accordance with the applicable British Standard or other spe

、cification, or shall be agreed between the parties. 7.3 Remove the test specimen from the heat source and, within 5 s, plunge it into water, at between15 C and 25 C, so that the highest point of the test specimen is at least 50 mm below the surface of the water. Maintain the test specimen in this po

、sition for at least 30 s. 7.4 Dry the test specimen and allow it to cool to ambient temperature; inspect it for any damage. 7.5 Repeat the procedure described in 7.2 to 7.4 so that three thermal shock cycles are completed.BS1344-22:1994 2 BSI 07-1999 8 Expression of results If there is no visible da

、mage to the enamel surface after being subjected to the test, the vitreous enamel surface shall be reported to be resistant to thermal shock at the specified temperature and number of cycles. 9 Test report The test report shall include the following: a) a description of the specimen (e.g. shape, thi
