BS1413 was first published in1947,
7、revised in1966 and further revised in1970 to specify metric dimensions and reduce the number of sizes from eight to five. The present edition supersedes BS1413:1970, which is withdrawn. It aligns the quad sizes in Table 1 and Table 2 with those specified in BS4000 and specifies page sizes for three
8、of the common sizes of paperbacks. For the purposes of this BritishStandard, a paperback is a book which is printed separately from a case-bound edition, in a large print number. There are technical factors which limit the sizes that are manufactured. It has been considered desirable to include thre
9、e common sizes for paperbacks, but because there is a variety of economic methods available for printing and binding of paperbacks, slight variations from these sizes may be found. Further, since for specialized purposes it is sometimes appropriate to issue paperbacks in other sizes, it is suggested
10、 that the sizes given in Table 1 for case-bound books should be utilized. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer
11、immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pagesi andii, pages1 and2, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in th

It applies to books of portrait shape only. NOTEThe title of the publication refe

14、age size and after trimming3mm from three edges of the page (head, tail and fore-edge) NOTEFor books other than paperbacks covered by clause5, which are bound by an unsewn method, allowance should be made for spine “trim”, which reduces the width of the page by approximately3mm. 3 Page sizes for case
15、-bound books The trimmed and untrimmed page sizes shall be as given in Table 1. NOTEThis table also gives the quad paper sizes from which the untrimmed sizes are usually obtained. Table 1 Page sizes for case-bound books 4 Trim allowance The nominal trim shall be3mm. NOTE 1This figure is subject to s
16、light variations, which may be caused by the following: a) maximum accepted tolerances in the size of the paper; b) tolerances which may be necessary, for other reasons, for the printing or binding processes; c) the practical limitations of guillotines. NOTE 2It is possible that the normal trim of3m
17、m on three edges will be insufficient on some quarto, and larger, books. NOTE 3It is not considered practicable to specify in this BritishStandard tolerances for books which require non-standard methods of manufacture, such as “bled” work, books produced on web-fed printing machines, or special mult

NOTE 1The “A” and “B” series of paperback book sizes have no relationship to the ISO-A and ISO-B series of trimmed sizes
19、and should not be interpreted as belonging to the ISO series of sizes. NOTE 2For other page sizes, it is recommended that the trimmed sizes given in Table 1 for case-bound books should be utilized.
