It supersedes BS1765-1:1972 which is withdrawn. The correct choic

9、e of lockers for use in hospital wards is important because the most suitable type not only increases the comfort and well being of patients but also the work of nursing staff and domestic staff. No one type of locker meets the needs of all hospital patients but the types specified in this Part of B

10、S1765 are those most commonly required. The recommended principles to be taken into account in designing lockers are given in Appendix A. These recommendations will not only assist manufacturers to develop improved designs but will also assist Health Authorities to choose the types most suited to th

11、eir needs. Recommendations are given in Appendix B for the information a purchaser should supply with an enquiry or order. Product certification. Users of this British Standard are advised to consider the desirability of third party certification for product conformity with this BritishStandard, bas

12、ed on testing and continuing surveillance which may be coupled with assessment of a suppliers quality systems against the appropriate Part ofBS5750. Enquiries as to the availability of third party certification schemes will be forwarded by BSI to the Association of Certification Bodies. If a third p

13、arty certification scheme does not already exist, users should consider approaching an appropriate body from the list of Association members. Alternatively, users of this British Standard may wish to consider the desirability of assessment and registration of a suppliers quality systems against the

14、appropriate Part of BS5750 by a third party certification body. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. 16、 table on the inside front cover.BS1765-1:1990 BSI 11-1999 1 1 Scope This Part of BS1765 specifies requirements and test methods for general purpose hospital bedside lockers suitable for use by patients. It also makes recommendations for the design of lockers and for information to be provided by a

17、purchaser to a manufacturer. It does not apply to lockers made of metal or lockers intended to accommodate day clothes. NOTE 1Lockers for accommodating day clothes are specified in BS1765-2. NOTE 2The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Defi

18、nitions For the purposes of this British Standard, the definitions given in BS2015 apply. 3 Dimensions The overall dimensions shall be as follows: a) height of carcase865mm to980mm; b) width of carcase430mm to485mm; c) depth of carcase430mm to485mm; The top surface shall not overhang the carcase by

19、more than12mm at any place. 4 Requirements for materials 4.1 Timber 4.1.1 All solid timber members shall comply with class1 or class2 of BS1186-1 and shall be free from sapwood. 4.1.2 All solid hardwood timber shall be conditioned to a moisture content of111%(m/m) at the time of assembly of parts. 4

20、.1.3 Plywood shall be of a grade not lower than Grade B or Grade BB as specified in Table4 of BS6566-6. 4.1.4 Blockboard shall comply with bonding type MR (moisture resistant) of BS3444. 4.1.5 Wood chipboard shall comply with type1 of BS5669, shall have a minimum density of650kg/m 3 , and shall have

21、 a thickness not less than12mm. 4.1.6 Medium density fibre (MDF) board shall comply with BS1142-2. 4.2 Laminated plastics sheet Laminated plastics sheet shall comply with performance requirements for classification HGS of BS3794-1 and with the spread of flame requirements for a class1 material speci

22、fied in BS476-7. 4.3 Decorative laminated plastics sheet veneered board This shall comply with BS4965, designated S, as defined in BS476-7: class1. 4.4 Other plastics material If extruded plastic sheet and moulded plastics material are used in the construction of the carcase they shall comply with c

23、lass1 of BS476-7: class1. 4.5 Adhesives 4.5.1 Adhesives used in the construction of the locker shall comply with BS1203, BS1204 or BS4071. 4.5.2 The adhesive used for the bonding of plastics laminate to the substrate shall be that recommended by either the manufacturer of the plastics laminate or th

24、e adhesive manufacturer. 4.5.3 The adhesive used for bonding plastics extrusions shall be used and applied in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. 4.5.4 When tested by the method described in Appendix C of BS1203, each adhesive shall be resistant to spillage of water. NOTEAdhesives should

25、 also be resistant to blood, disinfectants and similar liquids encountered in hospitals. 4.6 Fittings 4.6.1 Wood screws Wood screws shall be of steel and shall comply with BS1210. 4.6.2 Hinges Hinges shall comply with BS1227-1A and shall allow a door opening of at least180 . NOTEHinges should be of

26、robust construction. Piano hinges are a type that allow180 door opening. 4.6.3 Swivel castors Swivel castors shall be fitted and shall have a diameter of not less than40mm and not greater than64mm and shall comply with BS2099-1. NOTEAll fittings, including their fixing screws, nuts and bolts, should

27、 be of adequate strength and sufficiently corrosion-resistant for general use in hospital wards. 5 Construction of timber lockers 5.1 Carcase rails The carcase rails shall be dovetailed, mortized and tenoned or dowelled into the sides. Backs shall be tongued or rebated or dowelled into the sides. 5.

28、2 Lippings With the exception of medium density fibre board (MDF), see BS1142, all edges of carcase ends and doors and all exposed edges of partitions and shelves shall be lipped with hardwood.BS1765-1:1990 2 BSI 11-1999 Lippings shall be at least6mm wide on the face side and solid tongued or butt j

29、ointed where high frequency glueing techniques are employed. Lippings shall be at least15mm wide on the face where the hinges are fixed. 5.3 Verticals Outside verticals shall be radiused and all sharp edges removed. All joints shall be glued using adhesives specified in4.5 and cramped together, so t

30、hat the shoulders meet accurately. 5.4 Plastics and veneers The use of protective or decorative plastics sections shall be additional to the use of wood lippings. Plastics or wood veneer shall not be applied directly to chipboard edges. 5.5 Partitions and shelves 5.5.1 Partitions and shelves shall b

31、e fixed in position (i.e.secured) and glued using adhesives specified in4.5. 5.5.2 The thickness of shelves and short divisions shall be not less than12mm if made of plywood and not less than15mm if made from chipwood. 5.6 Locker tops 5.6.1 The top substrate material shall be covered with decorative

32、 laminated plastics sheet the thickness of which shall be not less than0.8mm thick and compensated on the underside with a balancing veneer. NOTEThe surface of the veneer should be smooth and easily cleanable. 5.6.2 Edges shall be hardwood lipped all round with lippings complying with5.2 or alternat

33、ively fitted with a continuous PVC extrusion10mm thick on show surfaces. The extrusion shall be of such section as to accept a tongue which is an integral part of the top and shall be applied with a suitable adhesive, shrunk on under pressure in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. 5.6.3

34、Edging both of wood and plastics, shall be sufficiently wide on the face to allow for a minimum corner radius of10mm and lippings shall be applied as detailed in5.2. 5.6.4 Edgings, both of wood and plastics, shall finish flush on both sides and be rounded at the corners and arrissed. 5.6.5 Substrate

35、 material for the carcase top shall be not less than15mm thick before the plastics laminate veneers are applied. 5.7 Carcase bottoms Except for lockers constructed from medium density fibre board (seeBS1142), the carcase bottom shall be either18mm multi-ply hardwood, lipped on exposed edges and join

36、ted to carcase ends or shall be a hardwood frame, with stiles and rails of sufficient area to ensure adequate screw fixing of castors or skids. Castors shall not be fixed into chipwood. NOTEThese requirements are intended to provide secure fixings for castors (see4.6.3) or skids. The panel filling s

37、hall be flush fitting. 5.8 Carcase ends, doors and divisions Substrate material for carcase ends, doors and full height divisions shall be of15mm minimum thickness before decorative surface veneers are applied. 5.9 Backs Backs shall be of either6mm (minimum) thick plywood or9mm (minimum) thick chipw

38、ood. 5.10 Veneering Plastics laminate veneers shall be applied equally to both surfaces. Decorative paper veneers shall not be used. 5.11 Towel rail 5.11.1 A towel rail with a diameter of not less than15mm shall be fitted. The rail shall be either of mild steel, with a wall thickness of not less tha

39、n1.2mm and chromium plated in accordance with service condition number2 of BS1224, or of stainless steel, or mild steel with a plastics coating. 5.11.2 The towel rail shall be placed outside the locker but shall not protrude beyond the overall width of the locker. 5.11.3 The centre of the towel rail

40、 shall be not less than760mm above the hospital floor level and the clearance between the effective part of the towel rail and any part of the locker shall be not less than55mm. NOTEIt is recommended that the towel rail should be recessed into the rear of the locker so that it does not project beyon

41、d the rearmost face of the locker. 5.12 Hooks If fitted, hooks shall be located on the outside back of the locker and shall not protrude beyond the overall dimensions of the top of the locker. Hooks shall be of chromium plated mild steel in accordance with service condition number2 of BS1224, or of

42、stainless steel, or of mild steel with a plastics coating.BS1765-1:1990 BSI 11-1999 3 6 Finish of wood sections or plastics materials 6.1 The colour of exterior surfaces finished with laminated plastics material shall be either one of the colours specified in BS4901 or be the colours of wood grain.

43、6.2 Interior surfaces shall be finished with laminated plastics material which matches white colour reference00E55 specified in BS4901. 6.3 If edges of tops and outside vertical corners are bound with shock absorbent plastics material, there shall be no crevices at any joints. 6.4 Exposed surfaces (

44、including the underside of the bottom of the carcase and all the bearers) of hardwood sections but not finished with laminated plastics material, shall be planed true and smooth. Any required staining shall be applied by a spirit stain before finishing. The coatings shall be either of a pre-catalyze

45、d synthetic lacquer consisting of not less than one base coat rubbed down before applying a second coat, or of a polyurethane lacquer applied in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturer of the lacquer. 6.5 Coatings shall comply with the requirements specified in Table 1 when tested by th

46、e methods of test indicated. The test panels shall be prepared and coated in the same manner and under the same conditions as the locker.
