BS 1423, High carbon oil-hardening steel (precision finish). This British Standard, which was first published in1951, has been revised under
、 the authority of the Mechanical Engineering Industry Standards Committee. Changes have been made to the range of stock sizes in order to correspond with present-day demands. Also, recognizing that the precision ground parallel dowel pins are sometimes used in applications where the cylindrical surf
、ace of the pin has a functional duty, surface texture is subjected to numerical control, thus bringing considerably closer definition to the term “precision ground”. The term “dowel pin”, though widely used throughout industry has, so far, had no common meaning. Not only has the use of the term vari
、ed with industries but sometimes in the same industry its use has varied with the locality. On the one hand different terms have been used for pins of the same type, while on the other the same term has been applied to pins of differing types. For these reasons distinctions have been drawn by defini
、ng “precision ground parallel dowel pin” and “ground parallel dowel pin”. Dowel pins are normally used to locate two or more components to a required degree of accuracy. In order to provide for varying degrees of accuracy four grades have been standardized. Attention is specially called to the dange
、r which may arise when fitting dowel pins into blind holes. A suggestion for preventing this danger is made in an appendix. Part 2 of this standard deals with metric series parallel steel dowel pins. Obsolescent (by Amendment No.2). The need for the product covered by this British Standard has been
、reviewed and it has been decided that, in the interests of rationalization, it should be regarded as obsolescent and not therefore used for new designs. The standard will be withdrawn in due course. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of B

Four grades are included: 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard, the following definitions apply: 2.1 dowel pin the generic term which refers to all types of parallel locating pins, as defined in2.2, 2.3 and2.4 2.2 precision ground parallel dowel pin
、a Grade I steel dowel pin having a ground finish and a total diametral tolerance of0.0002 inch 2.3 ground parallel dowel pin a Grade II steel dowel pin having a ground finish and a total diametral tolerance of0.0005 inch 2.4 parallel dowel pin a Grade III or Grade IV steel dowel pin having a machine
、d, bright rolled or drawn finish, and a total diametral tolerance wider than that specified for Grades I and II 3 Material Dowel pins shall be manufactured from steels as follows: 3.1 Grades I and II steel dowel pins. From low carbon steel having an analysis conforming to BS970 1) En32 A or En32 B,
、or from high carbon steel conforming to either BS1407 2)or BS1423 3) . 3.2 Grades III and IV steel dowel pins. From free-cutting steel conforming to BS970 1)En 1 A. By arrangement between purchaser and manufacturer, other steels conforming to BS970 1)may be used as alternatives to those given above.
、 4 Hardness The dowel pins shall be supplied in accordance with the following requirements: 4.1 Grade I steel dowel pins: Dowel pins manufactured from steel to BS970 1)En32 A and B shall conform to the following requirements for hardness: below 1 / 8in diameter: unhardened; 1 / 8in diameter and abov
、e: hardened to a minimum of750 HV30 (BS427 4) ). Dowel pins manufactured from steels conforming to BS1407 2)and BS1423 3)shall have a hardness within the range600 to700 HV30 (BS427 4) ). The values on other hardness scales may be used in accordance with BS860 5) . 4.2 Grades II, III and IV steel dow
