9、e 1 Minimum net weights of filling materials 2 Publications referred to Inside back coverBS1877-8:1974 ii BSI 08-1999 Foreword This part8 of BS1877 is the third revision of the British Standard for pillows and bolsters for domestic use, which was first published in1952; it supersedes Part8 of BS1877
10、:1963, and introduces an additional standard size of pillow and new metric sizes of bolsters. Those new and additional sizes take into account the fact that new metric sizes of spring-interior mattresses for domestic use were introduced in BS1877-1 “Spring interior mattresses for adult use (performa
11、nceand construction)” which was published in1971. Particular attention has been given to requirements for cot and pram pillows. There has been concern for many years about the problem of a safe pillow for infants, particularly because there are occasional reports that accidental suffocation of a you
12、ng child in bed has occurred, sometimes linked with the suggestion that the unexplained death of an infant may have been caused by the use of an unsatisfactory pillow. This standard includes performance requirements for hardness of, and for air-flow through, infants pillows. It calls up the methods
13、of test given in BS4578 “Methods of test for hardness of, and for air-flow through, infants pillows”. There are several aspects of a pillow which may cause a certain amount of risk to the child using it, particularly the fact that if the surface becomes wet because of the child upsetting something o
14、r being sick, and the porosity of the pillow and cover does not allow the fluid to drain away quickly, any advantage which the pillow has when it is dry will be forfeited. There is also the possibility of the development of infection, for which reason it is reasonable to expect that a small childs p
15、illow should be easily washed and dried and that such cleansing does not impair the performance of the pillow. BS4578 therefore includes, as an integral part of the methods of test for air-flow and for hardness, a washing procedure whereby the pillow is twice washed, rinsed and dried. Any pillow whi
16、ch is to be used in a cot or pram, should have on its label the warning, as recommended by the Department of Health and Social Security, that a child under12months old should not sleep on a pillow. Attention is drawn to the fact that such pillows should also carry a warning that any additional pillo
17、w cover which is used should be of open construction in order not to interfere with the air-flow of the pillow, a property to which designers have given special attention. Attention is also drawn to the fact that the use of the BSI Certification Trade Mark (the Kitemark) is mandatory for compliance
18、with the requirements of this British Standard (see Clause10). The Kitemark may only be used under licence granted to the manufacturer by the Institution. 21、luding pillows for prams and cots, and bolsters for domestic use other than those filled with cellular rubber materials. The pillows covered by this Part of this standard are not recommended for children under12 months old to sleep on. In order to reduce the risk of a pillow being in any way respons
22、ible for fatal accidents it is recommended that the cot pillows are filled so that the surface of the pillow is firm enough to prevent a childs head from sinking into it, and such that the covering is not loose enough on the surface to be drawn into the mouth. NOTEThe titles of the British Standards
23、 referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of this British Standard the definitions given in BS2005 and BS1425 apply. 3 Dimensions 3.1 Pillows. The standard sizes for pillows for ordinary use shall be 74cm 48cm 69cm 46cm. Pillows of
24、 a size other than one of the standard sizes shall be clearly marked with the words “special size”, except pillows of58cm 38cm for use in cots and perambulators which shall be marked “cot pillow” or “pram pillow”. Each pillow shall be marked with its length and width. The dimensions specified are ac
25、tual finished sizes after sewing and turning of the ticks, and shall be subject to a tolerance of 5mm on the length and width. All measurements shall be made on the seam. 3.2 Bolsters. Each bolster shall be of one of the following lengths 150cm 135cm 100cm 90cm. Each bolster shall be marked with its
26、 length and shall not vary from that dimension by more than 2cm. 4 Filling materials 4.1 Pillows and bolsters for adult use. All filling materials shall comply with the requirements for cleanliness prescribed in BS1425. Pillows and bolsters shall be filled only with one of the following materials, o
27、r with a mixture of1) and2): 1) curled poultry feathers, which shall mean purified poultry feathers which have been processed by a curling machine and dusted, odourless, free from broken quills, flats, and foreign matter and complying with the requirements of Part12 of BS1425; 2) duck or goose feath
28、ers or down, or a mixture of these materials, complying with the requirements of Part12 of BS1425; 3) curled hair complying with the requirements of BS3474-3; 4) curled woollen flock, complying with the requirements of Part3 of BS1425; 5) kapok, complying with the requirements of Part7 of BS1425; 6)
29、 rubberized hair complying with the requirements of Part18 of BS1425 and BS3474-5, and made from curled hair complying with the requirements of Part9 of BS1425; 7) new and unused polyester fibres, made only from virgin fibres complying with the requirements of Part14 of BS1425 in a layered staple fi
30、bre batt or continuous filament form and processed in accordance with the fibre producers recommendations. 4.2 Pillows for cots and perambulators. Cot and pram pillows shall be filled only with materials complying with the requirements of4.1 3), and so used that the finished pillow is capable of mee
31、ting the requirements of Clause9. 5 Coverings 5.1 The following covering materials shall be used for pillows and bolsters for adult use. 1) When containing filling materials as described in4.1 1) and4.1 2), the covering shall be a ticking or other suitable material of Classification5 or6 of BS2036.
32、2) When containing filling materials as described in4.1 3) and4.1 6), the covering shall be either: a) a ticking or other suitable material of Classification1,2,3 or4 of BS2036, together with an interlining complying with the requirements of Table2 of BS2036, or b) a ticking or other suitable materi
33、al of Classification7 or8 of BS2036BS1877-8:1974 2 BSI 08-1999 3) When containing filling materials as described in4.1 4),4.1 5) or4.1 7), the covering shall be a ticking or other suitable material of Classification1,2,3 or4 of BS2036. Alternatively, pillows and bolsters for adults containing any of
34、 the filling materials specified in4.1 may be covered with a ticking or other suitable material complying with the requirements of Classification1,3,7 or8 of BS2732. 5.2 Cot and pram pillows shall be covered only with materials of open construction, and of high air permeability, so that the finished
35、 pillow is capable of meeting the requirements of Clause9. 6 Quantities of filling materials The net weight of filling material, complying with the requirements of Clause4, in each pillow and bolster shall be not less than the amount specified in the appropriate column of Table 1. The quantity of th
36、e filling material in cot and pram pillows shall be such that the finished pillow is capable of meeting the requirements of Clause9. 7 Making up All the seams of the cases of pillows and bolsters shall be sewn with not less than40stitches per10cm. The sewing thread used in making up the cases shall
37、be not inferior to35.4/3nominal tex sewing cotton. 8 Construction and workmanship All articles complying with the requirements of this standard shall be of good workmanship, and made in accordance with recognized good trade practices and methods. All components, including any not specifically referr
38、ed to in the various clauses of this standard, shall be of a quality at least equal to that used in recognized good practice in the trade. 43、f complying with the following performance requirements: 1) both before and after washing, the indentation, when measured in accordance with the method set out in BS4578:1970, shall not exceed25%; 2) both before and after washing, the pressure differential, when measured in accordance with the test
44、set out in BS4578:1970, shall not exceed20mmH 2 O. NOTE20mmH 2 O equals200N/m 2approximately. 10 Marking Each pillow or bolster complying with this British Standard shall be marked with the particulars in1) to5) below, inclusive. 1) Registered trade mark, registered trade name, name or BSI licence n
45、umber of the maker. 2) Description of the filling material, i.e.the type of each filling used (which shall be correctly described in accordance with the requirements of BS2005 where this is applicable, BS1425 and BS3474-3 and BS3474-5. 3) The dimensions of the pillow or bolster in centimetres. A pil
46、low which is not of the standard sizes shall also be marked with the words “special size” or “cot pillow” or “pram pillow” (see3.1). Abolster which is not one of the standard sizes shall be marked with the words “special size”. NOTEThe corresponding dimensions in imperial units may also be marked. 4
47、) In the case of cot or pram pillows, the additional marking: SAFETY Not recommended for any child under twelve months to sleep on. This pillow is designed for your childs safety. Keep it clean and dry. Cover it only with a pillow case made from a cloth of open construction. In any event, no plastic
48、s or rubber cover should be used. 5) The registered certification mark of the British Standards Institution together with the number of this British Standard (i.e.BS1877). 11 Packaging Plastics coverings used as packaging shall be marked with the following warning: TO AVOID DANGER OF SUFFOCATION, RE
49、MOVE PLASTICS COVER BEFORE USING THIS PILLOW.
