This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS1902-3.2:1981 BSI 07-1999 1 NOTEThis Section is to be read in conjunction with BS1902-
、3.0 “Introduction” and BS1902-3.1 “Guidance on sampling”. Section 3.0 shows the general arrangement of BS1902 and lists the Sections of Part 3. 1 Scope This Section specifies the methods for measuring the dimensions of bricks and test pieces that are nominally rectangular or cylindrical in shape. 2
、Reference The title of the standards publication referred to in this Section of this British Standard is given on the inside back cover. 3 Designation The methods specified in this Section may be referred to by the following designations. 4 Apparatus The following apparatus is required. 4.1 Vernier
、caliper, (see BS887) for measuring rectangular or cylindrical specimens. 4.2 Flat steel rule, which may be used in place of the vernier caliper if only rectangular specimens are to be measured. The rule may have a fixed hook at one end, consisting of a piece of hard steel projecting not more than 6m
、m at right angles to the edge of the rule, to fix the zero point of the scale against one edge of the brick. The rule may also have a sliding hook of similar dimensions. 5 Procedure 5.1 The definition of the edges and surfaces may be improved by the removal of any fringes, small blisters, etc.by lig
、ht abrasion. 5.2 If a steel rule is used, the edges of the brick or test piece bounding the dimensions being measured shall be in contact with the rule while the scale is read. 5.3 If a steel rule is used without a hook, the zero point of the rule shall be set against a plane surface held in contact
、 with the face of the specimen at right angles to the one being measured. 5.4 In the case of a rectangular brick or specimen, measure the three principal dimensions (length, width and thickness) of each brick or test piece to the appropriate accuracy 1) , using a vernier caliper or a flat steel rule
、 (seeclause 4). The measurements shall be made at the centre line of each face (i.e.four times for each dimension). 5.5 In the case of a cylindrical specimen, measure six diameters to the accuracy required 1) , using a vernier caliper, two at right angles to each other near one end of the specimen,
、two near the middle, and two near the other end. Measure the length of the cylinder at the extremeties of two diameters at right angles to each other (i.e.four times). 6 Expression of results 6.1 Dimensions shall be expressed in millimetres and decimal fractions of a millimetre. 6.2 Unless otherwise
、 required by the description of the method of test for which the measurements are being made, report the individual measurements and the mean measurement for each dimension of each test specimen. 7 Test report 7.1 If, as will often be the case, the measurements are made for the purposes of a test de
、scribed in another Section of this standard, no separate test report of the measurements is required. The fact that the measurements were made in accordance with this method of test (e.g. 1902-302/1) shall, however, be included in the report of the other tests. 7.2 If, exceptionally, a separate test
、 report of the measurements is required, it shall include the following: a) the name of the establishment where the measurements were made; b) the date the measurements were made; c) a reference to this method of test, e.g.measured by method 1902-302/1 (seeclause3); d) the description of the item me
、asured (manufacturer, type, batch number, etc.); e) the individual values and the mean value for each dimension of each item measured; f) in the case of a rectangular specimen, whether the measurements were made using a vernier caliper or a steel rule. Measurement using a vernier caliper Method 1902
、-302/1 Measurement using a steel rule Method 1902-302/2 1) The accuracy required depends upon the purpose of the test and should be indicated in the description of the method of test.2 blankBS1902-3.2:1981 BSI 07-1999 Publication referred to BS 887, Vernier calipers.
