7、ich is withdrawn. This British Standard supersedes the parts of BS 192:1982 that deal with Whitworth and BS wrench sizes. The tolerances across flats of openings have been amended from the previous edition to align more closely with, but not identically to, the tolerances given in ISO (International

8、 Organization for Standardization) standards. Apart from nominal thread sizes, all dimensions are in millimetres. Materials for manufacture of wrenches are not specified, but torque requirements are specified to ensure a minimum level of performance. Summary of pages This document comprises a front

BSI 1998 1 BS 192-2:1998 Figure 1 Wrench form 1 Scope This British Standard specifies design, dimensional and testing requirements for open ended wrenches for BS hexagon headed bolts, screws and nuts a

10、s specified in BS 916 and BS 1083. 2 Normative references The following normative documents contain provisions that, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this part of this British Standard. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or revisions of, any of these publications

11、 do not apply. For undated references, the last edition of the cited publication applies. BS 916:1953 (obsolescent), Specification for black bolts, screws and nuts, hexagon and square, with BSW threads, and partly machined bolts, screws and nuts, hexagon and square, with BSW and BSF threads. BS 1083

12、:1965 (obsolescent), Specification for precision hexagon bolts, screws and nuts (BSW and BSF) threads. BS EN 10109-1:1996, Metallic materials, hardness test Rockwell test (scales A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, K) and Rockwell superficial test (scales 15N, 30N, 45N, 15T, 30T, 45T). 3 Hardness The hardness o

13、f the wrench shall be (39 to 48) HRC inclusive when determined in accordance with BS EN 10109-1. 4 Finish All sharp edges shall be removed and wrenches shall be free from cracks, burrs and any other deleterious defects that may adversely affect the performance of the wrench, or, during proper use of

14、 the wrench, give rise to risk of injury to the user. Any protective finish shall conform to the appropriate British Standard. 5 Marking The wrench shall be plainly and indelibly marked with the following: a) the size of each jaw opening, in two formats: 1) the first giving the nominal diameter of a

15、 bolt to be fitted by the wrench, with a head size as specified in BS 916 or BS 1083, followed by the letters “BS” (e.g. 3/8BS); and 2) the second giving the nominal diameter of a bolt to be fitted by the wrench, with a head size conforming to Whitworth large hexagon sizes, followed by the letter “W

16、” (e.g. 5/16W); b) the name or trade mark of the manufacturer or responsible supplier. 6 Form and dimensions The form and dimensions of the wrench shall conform to Figure 1 and Table 1. 7 Resistance to torque When tested in accordance with the method described in annex A, wrenches shall withstand th

17、e minimum test torque requirements given in Table 1. 24、st A.1 Apparatus The test mandrel dimensions shall conform to Table A.1. The test mandrel height shall not be less than the thickness of the wrench head. The test mandrel shall have a minimum hardness of 55 HRC. A.2 Procedure Fully engage the wrench on the test mandrel as shown in Figure A.1. Apply

25、a gradually increasing force until the minimum test torque is reached (see Table 1). NOTE 1 The torque is calculated as the product of the magnitude of the load and the distance between the point of application of the load and the centre of the test mandrel. NOTE 2 A device in which the mandrel can

26、be rotated at the chosen torque (see Table 1), determined with an accuracy of 2.5 %, may alternatively be used for this test. The wrench should always be held firmly, and the stance of the user adjusted to prev

29、ent a fall if the tool slips. It should always be ensured that the wrench is fully engaged on the fastener and square to the fastener axis. Open ended wrenches should only be used for their designed purpose. They should not be used as a striking tool. The length should never be increased by using tu

30、bes, extensions or locking wrenches together to free frozen fasteners. Wrenches should not be exposed to excessive heat, as this may affect the temper and result in premature failure. The shape of the wrench should not be modified (e.g. by grinding wheel). Wrenches should be inspected regularly for

31、signs of damage or wear, and replaced as required.
