7、Committee to delete imperial units of measurement and to include sampling provisions for the assessment of compliance. BS2548:1954 is withdrawn. Wood wool is manufactured in a number of grades, ranging in nominal dimensions from1.4mm wide and0.075mm thick to6mm wide and0.375mm thick. It is not the p
8、urpose of this standard to deal with grades for special uses, although many of these grades will comply with it in respect of all requirements except dimensions. The standard is intended to cover only the grade of wood wool most commonly used for general packaging purposes, e.g.for the packaging of
9、machinery and other engineering equipment, furniture, glassware and ceramics. Requirements for cushioning properties are not specified but general guidance on the selection and use of cushioning materials is given in BS1133-12. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisi

This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS2548:1986 BSI 11-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies dimensions, pH, moisture content a
12、nd general requirements for wood wool for general packaging purposes. The standard does not apply to grades manufactured for specialized uses. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Materials and manufacture 2.1 General The wood wool sh
13、all be in the form of a knit mass of tangled strands and shall be manufactured from sound, well-seasoned softwood of low resin content and it shall be clean. NOTEWood wool should also be free as far as practicable from knots and cross grains. 2.2 Dust and small pieces When samples of wood wool are s
14、elected as described in Appendix A and examined as described in Appendix B, the mass of dust and small pieces under25mm in length shall not exceed4%(m/m). 2.3 Dimensions of strands The mean dimensions of individual strands, determined as described in Appendix C, shall be as follows: 3 Performance 3.
15、1 pH The pH of a water extract of the material, determined as described in Appendix D, shall be not less than4.5 nor greater than8.0. 3.2 Moisture content The wood wool shall contain between12%(m/m) and20%(m/m) of moisture, calculated on the mass of the material as received by the purchaser, when5g,
16、 selected as described in Appendix A, are weighed before and after drying for5h at104 1 C. NOTEAs wood wool is liable to change in moisture content when exposed to the atmosphere, it is emphasized that the term “as received” applies to the time at which the purchaser accepts delivery, i.e.when the w
17、ood wool is delivered to the purchasers premises if the supplier is responsible for transport, or when the wood wool leaves the manufacturers premises if the purchaser is responsible for transport. 4 Retesting Should any sample selected as described in Appendix A not comply with the requirements giv
18、en in2.2, 2.3, 3.1 and3.2, further samples shall be selected as described in Appendix A from two other bales in each25 of the consignment and retested. Should the average retest values so obtained comply with the requirements, the whole consignment shall be deemed to comply. 5 Packing Wood wool shal
19、l be packed in bales of a mass to be stated by the manufacturer; the stated mass shall be the net mass exclusive of battens and similar accessories used for packing purposes. width 1.75 0.25mm thickness 0.28 0.04mmBS2548:1986 2 BSI 11-1999 Appendix A Sampling Select one bale in every25 from the cons

The result represents a sample. Appendix B Determination of dust and small pieces Take approximately500g from each sample

Calculate the mean width and thickness, recording the result to the nearest0.01mm. Appendix D Determination of pH Take approximately10g of material from each sample (seeAppen
