、ws and nuts (UNC and UNF threads). Normal series. BS A102, Steel bolts (Unified hexagon and UNF threads) for aircraft. This British Standard has been prepared under the authority of the Mechanical Engineering Industry Standards Committee and forms one of a series relating to the main types and range
、s of spanners. The specification relates entirely to box spanners of the tubular type as it is intended that a separate standard will be prepared for the forged type and for socket spanners. The composition and layout are directly related to the latest revision of BS192, the title of which has been
、amended to “Open-ended spanners (not including B.A.sizes)”, except that while the spanners in BS192 are dealt with throughout on a single-ended basis, those in this specification are treated entirely as double-ended. Spanner dimensions are included for all the main hexagon ranges as in BS192 but it
、should be noted that the dimensions across flats are given in two grades, A and B. The reason for this is that provision has been made for alternative types of steels from which the spanners may be manufactured, GradeA referring to the better quality steel which is heat treated, and GradeB to steel
、with a much lower carbon content, which is not heat treated. The apparent anomaly in the tables, where GradeB spanners are given first and are to closer limits of tolerance, is explained by the fact that dimensional allowance has to be made for distortion resulting from the heat treatment of GradeA
、spanners. The marking of the spanners has been complicated by the necessity to indicate those which are intended for use on the various Unified hexagons. The problem has been solved in a manner identical with that put forward in BS192, and the system requires the use of simple figures derived from t
、he decimal equivalent of the size across flats. Investigations have shown that newcomers to the engineering industry experience no more and probably less, difficulty in mastering this method of nomenclature than the old fractional markings, which tended to be confusing because of their obvious diffe
、rence from the size of the actual jaw opening in some cases, e.g.,the large Whitworth range. There is a popular custom, whereby a series of tubular spanners is nested for convenience of storage or carrying but, after reviewing the matter, it was not considered advisable to include any provision for
、this practice in the specification. A table of spanners for metric hexagons is included. This has had to be prepared on a more or less arbitrary basis for the same reason that applied in BS192, i.e.because of the lack of co-ordinated specifications for metric bolts and nuts. As the use of the large
、Whitworth hexagons is still widespread, references to the relevant spanners have been incorporated in the table for the B.S. series.BS2558:1954 BSI 04-2000 iii A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. 40、n accordance with the following clauses. It is recommended that hexagons from two different ranges should not be associated on any one spanner. a) Spanners for Unified hexagons in BS 1768, BS 1769 and BS 1981. The marking (which shall also be the designation or nominal size) shall be a number derive
、d from the decimal equivalent of the nominal fractional size across flats of the hexagon, followed by the sign A/F. This number shall be rounded off to two decimal places and the decimal point shall be omitted. This requirement shall not debar any manufacturer from including, at his option, any addi
、tional mark associated with the size. The following are examples of this type of marking: 34 A/F represents a spanner for a No.8 pressed nut. 94 A/F represents a spanner for a 5 / 8in.diameter Normal series bolt and nut. 162 A/F represents a spanner for a1in.diameter Heavy series bolt and nut. A man
、ufacturer could add the marks 11 / 32A/F, 15 / 16A/F and 1 5 / 8A/F respectively to the above if he so desired. b) Spanners for B.S. hexagons in BS 1083 and BS 916 and for Whitworth large hexagons. Two fractions shall be marked on each end of these spanners. The first shall represent the nominal dia
、meter of a bolt, the head of which corresponds to a hexagon size in BS1083 or BS916. This fraction shall be followed by the sign BS. The second fraction shall represent the nominal diameter of a bolt, the head of which corresponds to a hexagon, in the Whitworth large hexagon range. This shall be fol
