、ations1908 and1944 requires that portable insulating stands, screens, boots, gloves, or other suitable means, shall be provided and used when necessary to prevent danger, and shall be periodically examined by an authorized person. “Other suitable means” include insulated hand tools such as spanners,

、 pliers, cutters, nippers, and screwdrivers, etc. This first standard for the insulation of screwdrivers sets out the material, fitting, insulation thickness and testing of such screwdrivers, where experience has shown that the use of satisfactorily insulated hand tools is required. Part1 of this Br

、d to in Parts1 and 2 of this standard but which are specially insulated for use on live electrical apparatus up to and including650volts. NOTEThe titles of the British Standards referred to in this Part of this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Nomenclature For the purposes of this Par

、t of this British Standard, the nomenclature shown in Figure 1 shall apply. The nominal size of a screwdriver shall be the length of the blade. NOTEFigure 1 shows a typical Engineers screwdriver but the terms given also apply to other types. 3 General requirements The insulated screwdrivers shall me

、et the requirements of Parts1 and2 1)of this standard where applicable. 4 Material WARNING. Plastics such as Nylon11 G.P.E. may be attacked by coming into contact with certain mineral and organic acids resulting in the destruction of their insulation properties. 4.1 Blades. Blades shall be manufactu

、red from steel conforming to the requirements of Part1 or Part2 1)of this standard. 4.2 Handles. Handles shall be manufactured from plastics material of cellulose acetate to BS1524, cellulose acetate butyrate orNylon11 G.P.E. 4.3 Blade insulation. Blade insulation shall be of a material with physica

、l and di-electric characteristics equal or superior to those of Nylon11 G.P.E. natural colour. The insulation shall be injection moulded to the blade and collar of the plastics handle in such a manner that an anti-twist and an anti-pull lock is formed at the area of encapsulation. 5 Insulation Where

、 Nylon11 G.P.E. natural colour is used, the thickness of the insulation shall be: 1) 2.3mm nominal for blades6.3mm diameter and larger; 2) 1.6mm nominal for blades4.8mm diameter and less than6.3mm diameter; 3) 0.8mm nominal for blades less than4.8mm diameter. The length of the encapsulation of the p

、lastics handle shall not be less than19mm and shall come within13mm from the point (see Figure 1). 6 Marking Each insulated screwdriver shall be plainly and indelibly marked with the following: 1) BS2559-3. 2) The manufacturers name or trademark. 3) The maximum voltage at which it may be used i.e.65

、0V max. The marking shall be carried out in such a manner that it will not impair the insulation properties. NOTEAttention is drawn to certification facilities offered by BSI; see the inside back cover of this standard. 7 Testing After insulation, screwdrivers shall be capable of passing the torque

、tests given in Parts1 and2 1)of this standard and subsequently shall be subjected to an electrical insulation test by being immersed in water as near as practicable to the extent of the insulation so as not to allow surface flashover (adistance of25mm has been found to be practicable) and shall with

、stand a potential of5kV alternating current between the metal and the water for a period of2 minutes. 8 Range of sizes The range of sizes for screwdrivers shall be as given in Parts1 and2 1)of this standard. The type of Engineers screwdriver with tang through handle and capped, as illustrated in Fig
