11、rings that are subject to exacting service conditions. It is not suitable for high duty dynamically stressed springs, for which wire conforming to BS 2S 204 ought be used, when hardened and tempered springs are required.2 Inspection and testing procedure2.1 GeneralThis British Standard shall be used

14、spring steel wire.4 Process of manufactureThe material shall be manufactured by an open hearth, an oxygen or an electric process unless otherwise agreed between the manufacturer and the purchaser in accordance with BS S 100. 5 Chemical compositionThe steel shall contain the chemical levels shown in

16、117 ConditionThe material shall be supplied in the appropriate condition stated in Table 2 unless otherwise agreed between the manufacturer and the purchaser, in which case the condition in which the material is to be supplied shall be stated on the order.Table 2 Condition of supply8 Freedom from de
17、fects8.1 Surface defects Visual examinationThe rod and wire shall be visually examined in accordance with BS S 100.8.2 Surface defects Deep etching testsSamples of rod and wire, selected and prepared for examination in accordance with BS S 100, shall be immersed in a 50 % solution of concentrated hy
18、drochloric acid in water at a temperature of not less than85 C. The time of immersion shall be approximately two seconds for every 0.025 mm of diameter, butshall be not less than two minutes nor more than 10 minutes.9 Final heat treatmentThe final heat treatment of the springs, the tensile test piec
19、es for the rod, wire and springs and the reverse bend test pieces shall be:1) harden in oil from a temperature between 820 C and 850 C;2) temper at a temperature not less than 250 C to give the mechanical properties specified in Clause 10.10 Mechanical properties10.1 Tensile testsThe tensile propert

For round wire,
23、each test piece shall be bent over suitable formers having radii not exceeding three times the nominal wire diameter and shall withstand,without cracking, three complete bends.10.3 Single bend test (wire only 2.2 mm diameter or thickness and greater)The test pieces, selected in accordance with BS S
24、100, shall be taken from the wire in the condition asdelivered and shall not be heat treated before being tested. They shall be tested in accordance with BS S 100over a radius equal to half the diameter or minor sectional dimension of the wire.10.4 Wrapping test (wire only less than 2.2 mm diameter
25、or thickness)The test pieces, selected in accordance with BS S 100, shall be taken from the wire in the condition as delivered and shall not be heat treated before being tested. They shall be tested in accordance with BS S 100.11 Examination for decarburization11.1 Microscopical examination of rod,
26、wire and springs shall be made in accordance with BS S 100.11.2 The section shall show no completely decarburized zone. The maximum amount of identifiable decarburization shall not exceed 1.5 % of the diameter or minor sectional dimension of the rod or wire.12 Dimensional tolerancesDimensional toler
