The purpose of this Briti
、sh Standard, which it is hoped will be the first of a series on crane components, is to limit the range of tyres for crane rail wheels, and standardize dimensions and tolerances in order to facilitate production. The first part of this standard deals with double-flanged parallel-tread tyres and is b
、eing issued separately to meet the demand for at least one standard type of crane-wheel tyre at the earliest opportunity. The necessary clearances between the flanges and the rail have been taken into account. The dimensions specified are finished sizes for new tyres (except for the bore, which has
、an allowance for finishing-machining to fit the centre). Allowance has been made for wear on treads and flanges. The standardization of crane rails is now under consideration. NOTEWhere metric equivalents have been given, the figures in British units are to be regarded as the standard. The metric co
、nversions are approximate. More accurate conversions should be based on the tables in BS 350, “Conversion factors and tables”. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Complian

This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS3037-1:1958 BSI 02-2000 1 1 Scope This part deals with double-flanged tyres with parallel treads and gives rolling and machining tolerances to be employed in their manufacture. The range covered is from 18 in. tread diameter
、 by 4 in. wide to 36 in. tread diameter by 9“ in. wide. Notes on manufacture are included in Appendix 2. 2 Dimensions a) Range of Sizes. Tyres shall be selected from the range of sizes set out in Table 1. b) Profile of Tyres. The profile of the tyre shall conform to the contour appropriate to the si
、ze of the tyre shown in Figure 1, Figure 2 or Figure 3. The dimensions are tabulated for convenience in Table 1. Reference numbers in the table and the figures consist of the diameter of the tyre followed by its width. c) Tolerances. The rolling and machining tolerances are as set out in Figure 4. F
、or easy reference and identification, tyres are referred to by tread diameter and width. Only one thickness of tread is specified for each diameter. 3 Material The tyres shall be made from steel produced by the acid or basic open hearth or an electric process. Neither the sulphur content nor the pho
、sphorus content of the steel shall exceed 0.060 per cent. On request, the manufacturer shall supply the analysis of each cast for carbon, silicon, manganese, sulphur and phosphorus. A sufficient length shall be discarded from each ingot to ensure freedom from piping or other harmful defects. Each in
、got shall be of a length and weight sufficient to produce two or more tyre blanks after the discard has been removed. 4 Freedom from defects On completion of rolling the tyres shall be free from harmful defects. 5 Brinell hardness test On each type the manufacturer shall make a Brinell hardness test
、 in accordance with BS 240-1, “Method and tables for Brinell hardness testing”. The Brinell hardness number shall be not less than248 and shall not exceed 285. The test shall be made on one face of the tyre midway between the tread and the bore, after 3 / 16in.(4.8mm) has been removed from the rolle
、d surface. On request, the manufacturer shall supply a certificate of the hardness number given by the above test. 6 Retests Should a tyre fail in the hardness test, the tyre may be heat-treated or re-heat-treated and submitted for a further hardness test. 7 Inspection The purchaser or his represent
、ative shall have access to the works of the manufacturer at all reasonable times; he shall be at liberty to inspect the manufacture at any stage. Material that does not comply with the terms of this specification is liable to rejection. 8 Testing facilities The manufacturer shall supply, at his own
、cost, the labour and appliances for such testing as may be carried out on his premises in accordance with the specification. Failing facilities at his own works for making the prescribed tests, the manufacturer shall bear the cost of carrying out the tests elsewhere.BS3037-1:1958 2 BSI 02-2000 Table

、 table Appendix 2 Notes on manufacture It is important that the radii between the flanges and the tread are less than the radii on the rail head. Where special rails are used (such as bar section) the radii specified may require modification. The crane maker should ensure that adequate running clear
、ance is provided to prevent “flangebinding”, taking into account the end float on the axle and the specified tolerance between the centres of the crane track rails. The tyres specified are designed for shrinking on the wheel centres, and if properly fitted they need no further means of securing. The
、 normal interference fit for shrinkage is0.001in.perinch(0.001mmpermm) of bore. To ensure that the tyre is located squarely a flange is provided on the wheel centre to match with a corresponding recess in the tyre. There should be a clearance on the diameter between the flange and the recess. The ty
