、959 ii BSI 02-2000 Foreword This standard makes reference to the following British Standards: BS 1580, Unified screw threads. BS 1916, Limits and fits for engineering Part 1:Limits and tolerances. This British Standard has been prepared under the authority of the Mechanical Engineering Industry Stan
、dards Committee in response to a request from the Machine Tool and Workshop Plant Sub-committee of the Inter-Services Engineering Standards Co-ordinating Committee. For several years there have been two main types of adjustable hand reamers with inserted blades in production; one type, based on a we
、ll-known American pattern, is in general commercial use while the other has been used almost exclusively by the Services. Within the two main types there have been variations in nominal sizes and ranges of expansion which led to difficulties in ordering and stocking these tools. The experience of ma
、nufacturers indicated that the American pattern was generally acceptable to industry and the Services expressed their willingness to adopt it if the variations in sizes and ranges of expansion could be eliminated. The principal task of the Committee responsible for this standard therefore was to est
、ablish a single type of adjustable reamer and to produce co-ordinated ranges of nominal sizes and expansions. The standard does not purport to give all the detailed information required for the manufacture of these reamers. Since they are recognized as jobbing and not precision tools it is considere
、d that the specification should confine itself to the essential features necessary to ensure the establishment of a single range of reamers in standard sizes and with standard rates of expansion. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of Brit
、ish Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages1 to 3 and a back cover. This standard has be
、en updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS3088:1959 BSI 02-2000 1 1 Scope This British Standard relates to adjustable hand reamers with inserted blades and specifies ranges of expansion, numbers
、 of blades and certain general dimensions and features. 2 Ranges of expansion The standard ranges of expansion shall be in accordance with Column1 of Table 1. 3 Blades The number of blades for a given size of adjustable reamer shall be as shown in Column2 ofTable 1. Blades shall be supplied in match
、ed sets. 4 General dimensions The general dimensions of adjustable hand reamers with inserted blades shall be in accordance withTable 1. Metric equivalents of these dimensions are given inTable 1A. 5 Screw a) General. The screw threads on the body and on the nut shall be of Unified form in accordanc
、e with BS1580, “Unified screw threads”. Wherever possible, threads of the standard UNF series have been selected and are so indicated in the table. b) Tolerances. The screw threads on the body of adjustable reamers shall conform to the limits and tolerances for Class1A and those in the nut shall con
、form to the limits and tolerances for Class1B as specified in BS1580, “Unified screw threads”. 6 Lead A lead shall be provided on the cutting portion of adjustable hand reamers. 7 Centres The centres of adjustable reamers shall not be removed, and shall preferably be recessed to protect them from da
、mage. 8 Nuts Nuts shall be provided with flats as shown in the figure toTable 1. 9 Marking Each adjustable reamer shall be indelibly marked with the size range applicable to it and with the manufacturers name or trademark.
