、ns referred to Inside back coverBS3092:1973 BSI 02-2000 iii Foreword This British Standard has been prepared under the authority of the Mechanical Engineering Industry Standards Committee to facilitate the production and interchange of main friction clutches, main power-take-off assemblies and assoc

、iated attachments for internal combustion engines, excluding aircraft engines. In general, dimensions specified are based on those of components in current use, but in certain instances they have been adjusted to suit applicable standard practice. The need for interchangeability has necessitated con

、sideration of current American practice and where necessary, for instance on flywheel housings, clutch housing spigots, clutch splines, main power-take-off assemblies and cam-operated friction plate clutches, certain American Standard dimensions have been adopted. The principal changes in this revis

、ion of BS3092:1959 include the up-dated dimensions for single and multi-plate coil spring operated clutches and the introduction of details of diaphragm spring clutches. Because the identification code for clutches is no longer used, reference to it in the tables has been deleted. This standard does

、 not specify dimensions for shaft couplings of rigid and flexible types, neither does it specify dimensions for flywheel attachments to crankshafts. Automatic transmissions are not included. NOTEWhere metric equivalents are given the figures in imperial units are to be regarded as the standard. The

、metric conversions are approximate. More accurate conversions should be based on BS2856, “Precise metric conversions of inch and metric sizes on engineering drawings”. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsibl

、e for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i to iv, pages1to 34, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been upda

、ted (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.iv blankBS3092:1973 BSI 02-2000 1 1 General 1.1 Scope This British Standard specifies envelope, attachment and certain other dimensions of flywheel-mounted main

、drive components for internal combustion engines (excluding aircraft engines). In Section5, “Housings”, only dimensions relevant to the mating of the components are specified. NOTEThe titles of the British Standards referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 1.2 Splines Spline

、s for clutch hubs shall be as specified inFigure 1 andTable 1. For splined hubs of driven plates above7 in nominal diameter, two sizes of splines are specified for each size of certain clutches to cater for light and heavy duty uses. Subsequent to the publication of BS3550, a suitable range of invol

、ute splines may be used as an alternative to the10spline series now specified. 1.3 Spigot (pilot) bearings The nominal dimensions for spigot (pilot) bearings specified in this standard (which may be located in flywheels, crankshafts or separate housings), are those for single-row ball or roller bear

、ings which conform to BS292. NOTEWhen other types of bearings are used, it is recommended that in the interest of interchangeability their bores be such as to accommodate clutch-shaft spigots made to suit the specified ball or roller bearings. It is recommended that, in order to accept the greater l

、ength of spigot needed for plain type bearings, flywheels and crankshafts of engines using spring-engaged clutches up to and including10 in nominal diameter be machined to accommodate a bearing2 1 / 2times the width of those ball and roller bearings specified in the relevant tables of this standard.

、 1.4 Dowels Dimensions of stepped dowels shall be as specified inFigure 2 andTable 2a andTable 2b, to ensure: 1) Positive retention of the dowels in the flywheel when the clutch cover is in position. 2) Asymmetrical assembly of clutch to flywheel. Flywheels shall be balanced with dowels in situ. Whe

、n measured on the assembled engine, clutch dowels shall be co-axial and equidistant from the crankshaft centre line within0.004in. 1.5 Tolerances In order to ensure interchangeability and correct functioning, tolerances shall be as shown in the relevant tables. Tolerances specified in BS1916 have be

、en incorporated wherever their use would not preclude interchangeability between US and UK products. The eccentricity and deviation from squareness of the parts listed inTable A, when measured relative to the crankshaft centre-line, shall not exceed the values specified inTable A.BS3092:1973 2 BSI 0
