、repared under the direction of the Farm and Horticultural Building Standards Policy Committee. Together these Parts supersede BS3445:1981 which is withdrawn. The main function of this British Standard is to protect the water supply against contamination, and this Part gives recommendations for the i

、nstaller and operator on meeting water byelaw requirements. It is recognized that manufacturers of troughs are rarely involved in the manufacture or supply of water fittings or in their installation. This standard is therefore written in two Parts in order that the Parts can be specified separately

、or together as required. The recommendations given in this Part, however, assume that the quality of water trough bodies, service boxes and of the water supply system meet the requirements specified in BS3445-1. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contrac

、t. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pagesi andii, pages1 to6, an inside back cover and

This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS3445-2:1992 BSI 06-1999 1 1 Scope This Part of BS3445 gives recommendations for the siting, installation and operatio

Recommendations are also given in meeting water byelaw requirements or regulations where appropriate. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back

、cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of BS3445 the definitions given in BS3445-1 and BS6100 apply. 3 Installation 3.1 General 3.1.1 The completed installation should comply with the relevant water byelaws or regulations applicable to the area. The recommended dimensions for a type “A”

、air gap are given in Table 1 and a typical trough installation is shown inFigure 1. 3.1.2 Where possible a free draining site should be chosen for the installation. 3.1.3 The water trough and the associated pipes and fittings should be as specified in BS3445-1. 3.1.4 The trough should be sited away

、from tall hedges or trees where leaves and flies may contaminate the water or irritate livestock. 3.1.5 A concrete or hardcore standing should be laid not less than2m wide around the trough to prevent poaching. Table 1 Type “A” air gap 3.1.6 Wooden or metal cradles, cleats, water pipes, stop valves,

、 surface boxes, pipe guarding, thermal insulation and other ancillaries should comply with relevant British Standards, or in the absence of a British Standard should be of a quality and durability comparable with the trough. 3.2 Trough support 3.2.1 Troughs should be supported by one of the followin

、g and installed with the top edges of the drinking compartment horizontal: a) wooden or metal cradles; b) brick or concrete walls or cradles; c) concrete or brick base; d) a compacted bed of hardcore, chalk or shingle, blinded to give a level surface. 3.2.2 The support should be such that the trough

、 is firmly anchored, both when empty and when full, so that it cannot be disturbed by animals. The fixture should be independent of the attachment of the trough to the water pipe. 3.2.3 The choice of mounting should take into account future use of the ground. 3.2.4 If the trough is of galvanized ste

、el, it should be placed on supports to raise the bottom of the trough clear of the ground in order to minimize corrosion. 3.3 Water supply pipe, stop valve/cock, surface box, pipe guarding and thermal insulation 3.3.1 The water supply pipe should be laid underground, with a depth of cover not less t

、han750mm. 3.3.2 A stop valve complying with BS5433 or an underground plug cock to BS2580 should be provided in the water supply pipe near the trough to control the water supply to the float operated valve. 3.3.3 The stop valve/cock should be placed underground, at a depth of not less than750mm and s

、hould be placed in a position where it cannot be damaged by animals. 3.3.4 The stop valve/cock should be accommodated in an underground chamber of not less than225mm internal diameter, providing sufficient space to permit operation of the crutch-head by hand. 3.3.5 The stop valve/cock chamber should

、 be provided with a lid or surface box, incorporating a retaining device to prevent opening or disturbance by livestock or farm vehicles. Figure 1 Typical trough installationBS3445-2:1992 BSI 06-1999 3 3.3.6 The whole of the water supply pipe, from the point where it connects with the float operated valve to the point at which it reaches a depth of750mm below ground,

、 should be lagged in accordance with BS6700 as a protection against frost damage. The portion of the lagging which is above ground should be covered externally to protect it from moisture and should be accommodated in a pipe guard or other suitable enclosure. The portion of the lagging which is belo

、w ground should be protected against underground moisture. It is recommended that this be achieved by sleeving the water supply pipe and lagging in heavy duty hose or other flexible pipe, and sealing the annular space between the water supply pipe and the sleeve at each end by means of a bush and a

、worm-drive hose clip, suitably protected from corrosion. 3.3.7 To minimize the risk of frost damage, it is recommended that the water supply pipe between the underground stop valve/cock, and the float operated valve should be of polyethylene in accordance with BS6572. 3.3.8 The float operated valve

、should be rigidly attached to the service box or trough and should be adjusted so that the highest level the water in the drinking compartment can reach is not less than25mm below its top edge. 3.3.9 If a trough is installed such that the supply pipe is not protected by a wall or other structure, a

、pipe guard should be fitted which encloses the supply pipe and lagging from all sides and from above. This is to provide protection against damage by livestock. The pipe guard should be securely attached to the trough or service box. 4 Operation and maintenance 4.1 In the interests of good animal hu

、sbandry troughs should be kept clean and clear of rubbish. 4.2 Drain holes and plugs should be located at the bottom of an end plate rather than underneath the trough. NOTEDrain holes and plugs can usually be supplied to order by the manufacturer. Galvanized steel troughs may be drilled on site to t

、ake such a fitting but care should be taken to remove any swarf after drilling, as this is dangerous to animals and a cause of corrosion to the trough. Alternatively, siphons or pumps may be used for draining troughs.BS3445-2:1992 4 BSI 06-1999 Appendix A Information to be supplied by the purchaser

、The following information should be made available by the purchaser: a) type of trough, i.e.concrete, steel, GRC or polyethylene; b) shape and capacity; c) whether any of the following are required to be fitted or supplied as extras: 1) drain holes, plugs and chains; 2) cleats; 3) pipe guarding; 4)
