、(flow) A.1 Apparatus a) Mould for casting of test specimens. The mould shall consist of a stainless steel plate resting on a smooth glass slab. The metal plate shall be6.0mm thick, having flat parallel surfaces and containing four holes10.0mm in diameter as illustrated in Figure 1. The axes of the h

、oles shall be perpendicular to the surfaces of the plate. The sides of the holes shall be finished smooth. The glass slab shall be about150mm long,75mm wide and20mm thick (6in 3in 0.75in). b) Flow testing instrument. The flow testing instrument shall be as illustrated in Figure 2 and shall consist o

、f the following: A a weight; B a shaft having low thermal conductivity; C a brass platen. The total weight, in air, of these three components shall be2000g. The weight A shall be separated a minimum distance of76mm (3in) from the brass platen C by the shaft B which shall be of ebonite or of a simila

、rly poor thermal conductor to reduce heat loss from the specimen. The diameter of the brass platen shall be not less than51mm (2in). The thickness shall not exceed6.35mm (0.25in). c) Water bath. The water bath shall be capable of maintaining the specified temperature(37 C and45 C) to within a tolera

、nce of 0.1degC. A.2 Preparation of specimens A sample of about25g shall be broken into small pieces which shall be placed in a polythene bag and suitably wrapped and sealed with a rubber band to prevent ingress of water. The specimen shall be immersed in water at the working temperature plus or minu

、s1degC as specified by the manufacturer for20minutes. The material shall be then kneaded for3minutes to uniform consistency with intermittent immersion in the water bath to maintain the working temperature. The softened material shall then be moulded into each hole of the mould consisting of the sta

、inless steel plate and glass slab (seeAppendix A.1 a) both previously warmed to the working temperature specified by the manufacturer. When each hole of the mould is overfilled, a smooth, flat tin-foil-covered or aluminium-foil-covered glass plate, preheated to the working temperature specified by t

、he manufacturer, shall be placed on the top of the mould. A load of9000g, or alternatively of20lb, shall be applied to the top of the foil-covered glass plate for10minutes. The weight and the glass plate shall then be removed and the excess material trimmed away flush with the mould surface; a metal

、 scraper drawn across the mould face can be used for this purpose. The perforated metal plate shall be removed from the glass slab by gentle tapping. The specimens shall then be removed from the holes by chilling in water at about10 C, and shall then be conditioned at2025 C for about24hours before t

、esting. A.3 Method of test The initial length of the conditioned specimen shall be determined at2025 C using a micrometer caliper. Four measurements shall be made around the circumference, and one measurement shall be made along the axis of the specimen. The measurements shall be averaged and the re

、sult recorded to the nearest0.005mm. The specimen and the flow testing instrument as detailed in Appendix A.1 b) shall be placed in a water bath and held at the testing temperature for20minutes before testing. The temperature of the water bath shall be controlled to within 0.1degC of the required te

、mperature. A suitable thermometer selected from BS593 1)and provided with a certificate of errors supplied by the National Physical Laboratory or equivalent body shall be used for determining the temperature. Agitation shall be provided in the water bath by means of a mechanical stirrer. A thin shee

、t of waterproof cellulosic film shall be placed between the instrument and each end of the specimen. The bottom of the specimen shall be51mm (2in) below the surface of the water in the bath. A constant axial load of2000g shall then be applied to the specimen for10minutes, after which the specimen sh

、all be removed and cooled in air to2025 C. The cellulosic film shall be stripped off and the final length determined in the same manner as the initial length. 1) BS593, “Laboratory thermometers”.BS3886:1965 BSI 12-1999 3 The flow as demonstrated by the change in length shall be reported as the perce

、ntage of the initial length. The value for flow at any temperature shall be the average value for two specimens and shall be reported to the nearest0.1per cent. Appendix B Evaluation of impression taking properties B.1 Apparatus a) A test block of the form and dimensions shown in Figure 3. b) A flat

、 plate to support the specimen while it is attaining the required temperature. c) A weight having a base approximately50mm in diameter and weighing1000g. d) A water bath, the temperature of which can be controlled at45.0 0.1 C. B.2 Preparation of specimens A disk not less than40mm in diameter and be

、tween4mm and7mm in thickness shall be prepared in a suitable mould after the sample specimen of the material has been prepared in accordance with Appendix A. B.3 Procedure The flat plate, the test block, and the weight of1000g shall be immersed in a water bath at45.0 0.1 C. The water level of the wa

、ter bath shall be305mm above the top surface of the test block. The specimen shall then be placed on the flat plate in the water bath. After immersion for20minutes the specimen shall be centred on the test block, a thin sheet of suitable material (e.g.water resistant transparent cellulose film) shal

、l be placed over the specimen and the weight of1000g applied for10minutes. As soon as the load is removed the test block and the specimen shall be taken from the water bath and chilled in water at a temperature of about10 C. The chilled specimen shall then be removed from the block and examined. The

、 impression shall be considered satisfactory if the ridges corresponding to the large grooves of the test block are sharp, and the ridges corresponding to the fine grooves are complete and visible to the unaided eye for at least30mm of their length.
