8、b Trade Association. It is hoped that this standard will reduce any misunderstandings that may arise when nursery stock is bought and sold. It is not intended to be a precise botanical specification. This Part of this standard specifies requirements for what are usually described as “container-grown

9、 herbs”, i.e.herbs grown in the container in which they are to be sold. Herbs not so grown are included in BS3936 “Nursery stock”, Part7:1989 “Specification for bedding plants”. The dimensional requirements are based on the growth characteristics of UK-grown plants. Plants grown elsewhere may have d

10、ifferent characteristics and therefore, for the protection of buyers, this standard requires the supplier to state whether or not the plants offered for sale are UK-grown. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are respon

11、sible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. This will be indicated in the amendment table on theinside front cover.BS3936-11:1984 BSI 06-1999 1 1 Scope This Part of BS3936 specifies requirements for the root system, condition, dimensions and packaging of herbs most widely grown and used in the U

13、K for culinary purposes. The requirements apply to container-grown herbs supplied to garden centres, retail shops and similar outlets, and intended for sale during the growing season. Included for information only in Appendix A is an indication of whether the plants are annual, biennial, perennial,

14、etc. 2 Definition For the purposes of this British Standard, the following definition applies. UK-grown grown in the United Kingdom either for more than half of one growing season or until a substantial proportion of the plant has grown in the UnitedKingdom 3 Origin Herb plants shall be true to name

15、. 4 Root system 4.1 The root system shall be well-balanced in relation to the plant as a whole and shall be conducive to successful transplantation. 4.2 The species listed in Appendix A shall be supplied in containers of appropriate size. 4.3 Plants shall have been established in the container in wh

16、ich they are to be sold long enough for substantial new root growth to have been produced therein. 5 Condition 5.1 Visual inspection shall not reveal any obvious pests, diseases and weeds in the plants or compost and the plants shall not exhibit any damage that would adversely affect future growth.

17、5.2 Plants of the following species shall have been stopped: Bush Basil, Sweet Basil, Lemon Balm, French Marjoram, Marjoram (Oregano), Pot Marjoram, Sweet Marjoram, Applemint, Peppermint, Spearmint, Summer Savory, Winter Savory, French Tarragon, Russian Tarragon, Thyme and Lemon Thyme. 6 Dimensions

18、6.1 Plants shall be of the size specified in Appendix A: the spread or height of herbaceous plants shall be measured when the plants are in leaf. 6.2 The minimum volume of containers or of compost per plant shall be0.15L,0.275L or0.75L as appropriate to the plant spread or height. 7 Packaging Packag

19、ing shall be provided to protect the plants and prevent damage, particularly overheating or drying out, during delivery to the retail outlet. 8 Marking 8.1 Each plant shall be accompanied by the following particulars so as to provide easy and adequate identification at the point of sale at the retai

20、l shop. a) Common name of the plant, as described in Appendix A. NOTEThe botanical name may also be given. b) Name of the supplier or organization responsible for marketing the plants. c) The number of this British Standard, i.e.BS3936-11:1984 1) . 8.2 If the plants are not UK-grown, this shall be s

21、tated with the information provided as specified in8.1. 1) Marking BS3936-11:1984 on or in relation to a product is a claim by the supplier that the product complies with the standard The accuracy of such a claim is therefore solely the suppliers responsibility. 29、OTE 3Chives should have a much larger root growth in comparison to total height than is the case with the majority of other herbs listed. NOTE 4Horseradish should have a substantial root system plus a viable crown. When transplanted, the plant grows so quickly that a minimum plant size is not specif

NOTE 5Because the growth pattern in pots of French marjoram, oregano, pot marjoram and sweet Cecily is unpredictable, depending on the prevailing weather conditions, no specific minimum sizes are specified. In general, the plants should spread sufficiently to cover the pot but in some cases pla
