、d This British Standard has been prepared under the joint authority of the Plastics and Rubber Industry Standards Committees and is a revision and combination of BS4023-1:1966 and BS4023-2:1967 which covered physically and chemically blown materials separately. Flexible cellular PVC sheeting is avai

、lable in two types as follows: Physically blown material. Produced by physical gassing and having a substantially open cell and porous structure. Chemically blown material. Usually produced on a backing by decomposition of the appropriate blowing agents and having a substantially closed cell structu

、re. The two types of material show markedly different characteristics. Physically blown materials usually have a high air permeance whereas chimically blown materials are usually impermeable. The principle technical changes made in this revision are: a) The procedures described in BS4443 “Methods of

、 test for flexible cellular materials”, Part2 “Method7 Indentation hardness tests” are now specified for the measurement of indentation hardness index. This method corresponds to International Standard2439 “Flexible cellular materials Hardness testing by indentation techniques”, prepared by Technica

、l Committee ISO/TC45 of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). For type1 sheeting, which, although used only in thicknesses of up to25mm, is manufactured in thicknesses greater than50mm, the material indentation hardness index is specified. For type2 material, which is normally on

、ly available in thicknesses much less than50mm, it is necessary to use a test piece consisting of a number of plies, and the product indentation hardness index is therefore specified. b) A range of indentation hardness levels is provided for each type of sheeting. Attention is drawn to the commercia

、l availability of sheeting complying with the requirements of this standard and claimed to have flame retardant characteristics. Specific requirements for this type of sheeting cannot be included in the standard because no generally accepted method of test for flammability is available. Efforts to d

、evise such a method are being made at both national and international levels. Sheeting with flame retardant characteristics is normally coloured pink or printed with appropriate identification. Further requirements on fogging and sound absorbance, and improvements in the method for assessing low-tem

、perature characteristics, are under consideration. Certification. Attention is drawn to the certification facilities described on the inside back cover of this standard. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsi

、ble for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS4023:1975 BSI 08-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies requirements for flexible cellular PVC in the form of sheets up to25mm in thickness for use in

、applications involving welding (e.g. padding and quilting). Sheets may be welded together to form long lengths. Two types of sheeting are specified as follows: Type 1. B.2 Apparatus A ventilated oven with forced air circulation, of sufficient size to allow free circulation of air with the test piece inposition, and capable of maintaining the test piece at a temperature of100 1 C, is required. B.3 Procedure

、 Determine the appropriate (material or product) indentation hardness index of the test piece as described in BS4443-2. Place the test piece in the air oven at a temperature of100 1 C for22h to24h. At the end of this period remove the test piece and allow it to stand for22h to24h at room temperature
