、ch Association. The standard provides detailed guidance for designers when choosing appropriate grades of accuracy, selected from BS436-2, of gears for application to the various gearing and transmission requirements of machine tools. Recommended grades also comply with ISO1328:1975, published by th

、e International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The recommendations are based upon those for straight spur and single helical gears contained in the “Manual for machine tool gearing” 1)published by the American Gear Manufacturers Association. In deciding upon the accuracy required in a set o

、f gears, it should be kept in mind that the greater the accuracy, the higher the cost. The optimum is, therefore, the lowest degree of accuracy which will fulfil the requirements of the application. In general, the higher the speed at which a pair of gears has to run, the higher the required accurac

、y, so that noise and dynamic loading will not be excessive. There are, however, applications where a precise control of motion is required so that the gears require a high degree of accuracy regardless of the speed at which they operate. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessa

、ry provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside

、 back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard, the definitions given in BS2519-1 apply. 3 Grades of accuracy of gears Recommended grades are given in Table 1. 4 General 4.1 The accuracy of mounting the gear in service should be compatible with the grade of gear specified. For

、example, radial and axial run-out should not be worsened by more than one grade by the effect of mounting. NOTE 1Where possible, the grade(s) selected for gears in power trains should be verified during development by frequency analysis of noise. This should identify noisy gears which need to be up-

、rated and, equally significant, quiet gears whose quality could perhaps be relaxed. NOTE 2Gearboxes which are independent of the main structure of the machine tool, with the obvious exception of a final drive such as a belt or a flexible coupling, can be treated externally to control noise and thus

、lower grades of gear may be tolerated. 4.2 Power trains of grade6 and better should be given tip relief corresponding to the combined effect of tooth deflection under load and cumulative error. In the case of coarser grades, tip relief should correspond to cumulative error (which will normally be fa

、r greater than tooth deflection under load). 4.3 For power train gears of grade6 and better, shaft diameter, rim thickness and bearing spacing should be based on detailed analysis or practical tests to confirm the design. 4.4 Grades1 to3 are usually reserved for master gears. 4.5 References in techn

、ical literature should refer to the grade designation used in this standard. Where applicable, the relationship with other accuracy designations, such as a manufacturers own, used should be explained.
