It supersedes BS4409-2:1970 which is withdrawn. It applies to portable and mobile type screw
、conveyors (augers). Fixed trough type screw conveyors are covered by BS4409-1. This Part of BS4409 has been revised to align with modern manufacturing practice and usage. Safety requirements will be the subject of a future part of the standard. The attention of users of this British Standard is draw
、n to the need to comply with all the statutory instruments and regulations appropriate to the equipment covered by the standard, and to its siting and use. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their
、correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages1 to 4, an inside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see co

、 mounted on wheels, crawlers or pontoons 3 Materials Sheet steel components of portable and mobile screw conveyors (augers) shall be constructed of carbon steel complying with BS1449-1 or stainless steel complying with BS1449-2. Steel tubular shafts shall comply with BS6323-1, and BS6323-3 or Part B
、S6323-8. Drive shafts shall be manufactured from steel complying with BS970-1. 4 Dimensions NOTEThe dimensions specified in the standard apply to carbon steel and stainless steel components and revised dimensions may be required for other materials. 4.1 Tubes and helical screws The dimensions of tub
、es and helical screws shall be in accordance withTable 1. NOTE 1The relevant dimensions are illustrated in Figure 1. NOTE 2The radial clearance should be determined by the manufacturer in accordance with the characteristics of the material to be handled and the working conditions. Unless otherwise a
、greed between the purchaser and manufacturer the radial clearance should be not less than6mm. 4.2 Discharge openings No dimension of the discharge opening shall be less than the diameter of the tube. 5 Shafts and drive shaft ends The shaft of the helical screw shall be either solid or a tubular shaf

When considering prime movers, the following should be borne in mind. a) A prime mover of adequate power and suitable type should be used. b) Any electric motor should comply with the Institution of Electrical Engineers
、 Regulations 1) . c) If electric motor drives are used due consideration should be given to the starting torque and to restarting under load. 7.2 V-belts Where V-belt drives are used, they shall comply with BS3733 or BS3790. 7.3 Starting and stopping Where direct on-line starters are used they shall
、 be fixed to a rigid structure. At any point where an operator has access to the conveyor means shall be provided for stopping the conveyor in an emergency. Every device controlling a prime mover shall be clearly marked to indicate how the prime mover can be stopped and re-started. NOTEThe controls
