The principal changes that have been made in this edition are as follows. a) A hardening up of all the metric dimensions to replace the soft metric equivalents of
、the inch dimensions in BS4894:1973. b) The alteration of certain tolerances to allow the product to be produced either by cold forging or machining from solid. c) The addition of aluminium as a material from which rivets may be manufactured. The use and application of rivets with different head styl

、4:1993 BSI 07-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies the materials and dimensions for bifurcated rivets with shank diameters of2mm to5mm inclusive and with oval and155 countersunk heads. A choice of slot depths is given; a general purpose slot depth for use when joining soft materials such a
、s leather, cloth, paper and soft wood, and a shorter slot depth for use with harder materials such as hardwood and thin metal. 2 References 2.1 Normative references This British Standard incorporates, by reference, provisions from specific editions of other publications. These normative references a

Subsequent amendments to, or revisions of, any of these publications apply to this British Standard only when incorporated in it by updating or revision. 2.2 Informative references This British S

Editions of these publications current at the time of issue of this standard are listed on the inside back cover, but reference should be made to the latest edition. 3 Definitions and symbols For the purposes of this British
、Standard, the following definitions apply. 3.1 head the upset portion of the rivet. The symbol for the head diameter is d k . The height of the oval head is denoted by the symbolk 3.2 radius the part of the rivet that joins the shank to the head smoothly and is denoted by the symbol r 3.3 shank the
、part of the rivet that extends from the underside of the head to the end of the rivet; its cross section is essentially round. The diameter of the cross section is denoted by the symbol d s 3.4 waisting the reduction in the shank diameter between the head and the slot which can occur with longer riv
、ets (seeB.1). This reduced shank diameter is denoted by the symbol d d 3.5 length dimension measured for a countersunk head rivet from the top of the head to the end of the rivet, and that for an oval head rivet from the underside of the head to the end of the rivet. This is denoted by the symbol l
、3.6 slot the part of the shank that forms two legs. The slot depth is denoted by the symbol l dand the width of the innermost part is denoted by n. The included angle between the two legs is denoted by the symbol!. (SeeB.2 for the aspects of manufacture.) 4 Dimensions The dimensions and tolerances o

、nquiry or order, the following information shall be given: a) the material; b) the type of head, i.e. oval or countersunk; c) general product description, i.e. bifurcated rivets; d) the nominal size (shank diameter) of the product in millimetres; e) the nominal length in millimetres; f) the type of
、slot, i.e. general purpose or short slot; g) the number of this British Standard, i.e. BS4894:1993 1) ; h) details of the finish (if required). 1) Marking BS4894:1993 on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturers declaration of conformity, i.e. a claim by or on behalf of the manufacturer
、s that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is therefore solely the claimants responsibility. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third party certification of conformity, which may also be desirable.BS4894:1993 2 BSI 07-1999 Example The designation

、for the fastening together of unpierced leather, cloth, paper, card, wood and thin metal strips, and can fasten three strips of different materials under appropriate conditions. The clench is made by forming the legs outwards and back towards the head to secure the fastened components between the he
、ad and the deformed legs. So long as the bifurcated legs are well spread, fastening is tolerant of clench quality, and the joint strength is related more to the strength of the materials being fastened. A.2 Choice of head style A.2.1 The countersunk head top is essentially flush with the surface of
、the fastened component after setting. To ensure good seating and holding power, the component countersink included angle should bedegrees and its diameter should exceed the maximum head diameter of the rivet. A.2.2 The oval head projects above the surface of the fastened components after setting. An
、nex B (informative) Aspects of manufacture B.1 Waisting In cold forging, the wire diameter has to be sufficiently smaller than that of the heading die to allow for insertion into the die before forging. In longer rivets there will be a portion between the head and the deepest part of the slot where
、the wire may not expand to touch the walls of the die. In the finished rivet this will appear as waisting of the shank. Waisting is permitted wherel 2d s , at least2mm from the head. B.2 Slots Slots will be slightly tapered to suit manufacturing methods. Where the user has a special requirement, thi
、s should be agreed between manufacturer and purchaser. Annex C (informative) Dimensional relationships The relationships of the dimensions given in this standard are as follows. NOTEThe tolerance band,h12, is part of a set of commonly used tolerances as given in BS4500-1.1 and BS 4500-1.2. 155 05 d
、d = d s h12 (see note) d kmax. = 2d s+ 0.2 where d sk 2 = 2d s where d s 2 and k 4 = 2d s 0.3 where d s 4 k max. = 0.35d s where d s k 3 = 0.32d s where d s 3 n min. = 0.25d s r min. = 0.075d s+ 0.075BS4894:1993 BSI 07-1999 List of references (see clause 2) Normative references BSI standards publica
