、andards Policy Committee, is one of a series for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes of a quality suitable for aerospace purposes and is a revision of BS3J11 which is superseded and withdrawn. This revision includes guidance on information to be supplied by the purchaser, and deletes reference to a to

Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself conf

This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in
、the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS4J11:1991 BSI 02-2000 1 1 Scope This BritishStandard specifies requirements for pressure-sensitive adhesive paper masking tape for aerospace purposes, such as temporary masking during painting operations. NOTE 1The information to be supplied by the pur
、chaser in the contract or order is listed in Appendix A. NOTE 2The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. NOTE 3The latest revision of an Aerospace Series standard is indicated by a prefix number. 2 Construction 2.1 The tape shall consist of a cr
、epe paper base which has been treated to render it resistant to penetration by the solvents present in aircraft paints and dopes. The base shall be uniformly coated on one surface with a pressure-sensitive adhesive and the finished tape shall be free from ingredients which have a deleterious effect,
、 e.g.crazing, on polymethyl methacrylate sheet. 2.2 The tape shall be supplied in roll form, with the adhesive side innermost, on a suitable core of the same width as the tape. 3 Dimensions The tolerances on the width of the finished tape shall be one of the following: a) 1.0mm for tapes up to and i
、ncluding19mm; b) 1.5mm for tapes over19mm. NOTEThe length and width of the finished tape should be stated by the purchaser in the contract or order (see Appendix A). The finished tape is usually supplied in lengths of50m in one of the following widths: 1) 6mm; 2) 12mm; 3) 19mm; 4) 25mm; 5) 30mm; 6)
、38mm; 7) 50mm. 4 Freedom from defects 4.1 When the tape is unrolled there shall be no tearing of the base material. 4.2 Each roll shall be reasonably free from substantial telescoping, gapping or other forms of distortion. When unrolled the tape shall show negligible transference of the adhesive to
、the backing of the underlying turn. NOTECare should be taken not to unwind tapes rapidly at temperatures below10 C. 5 Samples for testing 5.1 The test samples shall be conditioned in accordance with Appendix B. 5.2 A batch of tape shall consist of a number of rolls designated as a batch by the manuf
、acturer and substantially uniform in quality. 5.3 From each batch at least one roll shall be examined for compliance with clauses2 to4 inclusive, and tested for compliance with clauses6 to10 inclusive. 6 Breaking strength and elongation at break When determined in accordance with Appendix C, the bre
、aking strength of the tape shall be not less than24N per10mm width and the elongation at break shall be not less than7% and not more than20%. 7 Adhesive strength to steel When determined in accordance with Appendix D, the adhesive strength of the tape shall be not less than1.6N per10mm width. The ta
、pe shall separate from the plate without visible off-setting of the adhesive. 8 Freedom from deleterious effect on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) sheet When the tape is tested in accordance with Appendix E, there shall be no signs of crazing or other deleterious action on the PMMA strip and the stri
、p shall be substantially free from transferred adhesive. 9 Resistance to penetration by paint solvents When the tape is tested in accordance with Appendix F, there shall be no signs of crazing or other deleterious action on the PMMA strip and the tape shall separate from it without transfer of adhes
、ive. 10 Resistance to adhesive transfer by paint solvents When the tape is tested in accordance with Appendix G, it shall separate from the glass plate without transfer of adhesive.BS4J11:1991 2 BSI 02-2000 11 Packaging The rolls of tape shall be packed in such a manner that: a) they are protected f
、rom moisture, dust and sunlight; b) they can be easily separated; c) they are reasonably protected from damage in normal transit conditions; d) they are all packed flat on their cut edges. 12 Storage When stored flat on their cut edges, in the original unopened packing, at temperatures between10 C a
、nd30 C and between45% r.h. and75% r.h., the rolls of tapes shall still comply with this BritishStandard after a period of12 months. NOTEHigher temperatures and more humid conditions accelerate deterioration of the tape. It is recommended that stored material is used in the chronological order in whi
、ch it is received. 13 Identification The tape shall be identified by the number of this BritishStandard, together with the width required. For example,25mm wide tape shall be identified as “BS4J11/25mm”. NOTEThe number of this BritishStandard together with the width required, should be stated by the
、 purchaser in the contract or order (see Appendix A). 14 Marking 14.1 All markings shall be neat and indelible. Each transit carton within a complete package shall be marked with at least the following: a) the batch identification code number; b) a brief description and the number of this BritishSta
、ndard, i.e.Masking tape: BS4J11 1) ; c) the width of the tape; d) the length of a coil; e) the quantity of contents; f) the contractors initials or recognized trade marks; g) the words, “THIS SIDE UP”, and/or a suitable pictogram to ensure that packages are properly stacked in store. 14.2 If a trans
、it carton within a complete package is to be marked with additional information it shall be as follows: a) the date of manufacture, i.e.the month and year; b) the date of despatch; c) the contract or order number; NOTE 1The purchaser may request additional markings. NOTE 2The request for any additio
、nal markings should be stated in the contract or order (see Appendix A). 1) Marking BS4J11 on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturers declaration of conformity, i.e.a claim by or on behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the
、 claim is therefore solely the responsibility of the person making the claim. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third party certification of conformity, which may also be desirable.BS4J11:1991 BSI 02-2000 3 Appendix A Information to be supplied by the purchaser The following information
、should be stated by the purchaser in the contract or order: a) the number of this BritishStandard, i.e.BS4J11 (see clause13); b) the length required (see clause3); c) the width required (see clauses3 and13); d) whether any additional markings are required (see note to14.2). Appendix B Conditioning o

Remove and discard the three outer turns before cutting the test pieces from the conditioned roll. B.2 Condition all individual test pieces in accorda
