6、rds Committee, comprises a specification for acetone to meet the requirements of a wide range of industrial users. First published in 1933, BS 509 was last revised in 1971 and was subsequently amended to become BS 509-1. In this revision of BS 509-1, the requirements for distillation range, water co
7、ntent and the permanganate test have been made more stringent and the requirement for relative density has been replaced by one for density at 20 C. A requirement for miscibility with water is now included. In addition, the test methods associated with the specification are now published separately
8、as BS 509-2. This standard supersedes BS 509-1:1971, which is withdrawn. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Description The material s
11、hall be clear and free from matter in suspension, as assessed by visual inspection, and shall consist essentially of acetone, CH 3 COCH 3 . 3 Sampling and size of sample A sample of not less than 1 L shall be taken in accordance with BS 509-2. 4 Colour The colour of the material shall not exceed 10
12、Hazen units when measured as described in BS 5339. 5 Density The density of the material at 20 C shall be not lower than 0.789 g/mL and not higher than 0.791 g/mL when determined as described in BS 4522. 6 Distillation range When the material is distilled as described in BS4591, modified as specifie
13、d in BS 509-2, the initial boiling point at 1 013 mbar 1)pressure shall be not lower than 55.8 C and the dry point at1013mbar pressure shall be not higher than56.6 C. 7 Residue on evaporation The residue on evaporation of the material shall not exceed 0.001% (m/m) when determined as described in BS
14、4524. 8 Water content The material shall not contain more than 0.30 % (m/m) of water when determined as described in clause 4 of BS 2511:1970, modified as described in BS 509-2, using 20 mL of the material. 9 Acidity The material shall not contain more than0.002%(m/m) of acid, calculated as acetic a
15、cid (CH 3 COOH) and determined as described in BS509-2. 10 Alkalinity The material shall not show any alkalinity when tested as described in BS 509-2. 11 Permanganate test The material shall not completely discharge the permanganate colour within 180 min when tested as described in BS 509-2. 12 Alco
