、99 Foreword This Section of BS5173, prepared under the direction of the Rubber Standards Policy Committee, is a revision of clause 4.3 of BS5173-2:1976. BS5173-2:1976 is withdrawn. The remainder of the 1976 edition is to be revised and as each of the tests is revised it is intended to issue it as a
、separate Part or Section of BS5173, as described in BS5173-100. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity f

This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment
、 table on the inside front cover.BS5173-102.10:1990 BSI 07-1999 1 1 Scope This Section of BS5173 describes methods for the hydrostatic pressure testing of oil suction and discharge hose assemblies. These hoses, which are generally larger and heavier in construction than industrial hoses, are tested
、either as the complete hose length or as a complete hose assembly. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 General Unless otherwise specified in the following tests, all tests shall be carried out at standard temperature and humidity as
、specified in BS903-A35. However, because of the size and bulk of these hoses it is not always practicable to carry out the test in a controlled laboratory environment. It is therefore permissible to carry out the test in a stabilized industrial environment provided that the test assembly has been st
、ored in that environment for24 h. When the test environment does not comply with BS903-A35, the actual conditions shall be recorded and form part of the test report. 3 Apparatus 3.1 Pressure source capable of applying pressure at the rate specified in5.1.3 up to the specified test pressure. 3.2 Pres
、sure gauges of a suitable range shall be chosen for the test so that the test pressure reading is between15% and85% of the full-scale reading. 3.3 Measuring tape 4 Test medium Unless otherwise specified in the following tests, the test medium shall be water. WARNING NOTE. The use of air and other ga
、seous materials as testing media should be avoided because of the risk to operators. In special cases, where such media are required for the tests, strict safety measures are imperative. Furthermore, it is stressed that when a liquid is used as the test medium, it is essential that all air is expell
、ed from the hose or hose assembly because of the risk of injury to the operator due to the sudden expansion of trapped air being released when the hose bursts. 5 Procedure 5.1 Proof test on production hoses 5.1.1 The hose or hose assembly shall be laid out as straight as possible, filled with liquid
、 and vented to remove all trapped air. The hose shall be free to expand and contract without restraint. 5.1.2 Apply a pressure of0.7 bar 1)and measure the overall length of the assembly (L 0 ) in accordance with BS5173-101.2 using a suitable graduated tape. 5.1.3 Increase the pressure over a period
、of5 min to half the specified test pressure (see BS6596 or the relevant hose product specification). Hold this pressure for10 min and then reduce the pressure to0 bar over a period of5 min. 5.1.4 Increase the pressure once again over a period of5 min this time to the full specified test pressure and
、 hold for10 min. (See BS6596 or the relevant hose product specification.) 5.1.5 Whilst at the full specified test pressure remeasure the overall length of the assembly (L 1 ) The increase in length over that originally measured at0.7 bar represents the temporary elongation and shall be recorded as a
、 percentage, which is calculated as follows: temporary elongation = 5.1.6 Again reduce the pressure to0 bar over a period of5 min. 5.1.7 After an interval of at least15 min and not more than30 min again raise the pressure to0.7bar and measure the overall length of the assembly (L 2 ). The increase i
、n length over that originally measured at0.7 bar represents the permanent elongation and shall be recorded as a percentage, which is calculated as follows: permanent elongation = 5.2 Tests on sample, or prototype hoses 5.2.1 In addition to the non-destructive test specified in5.1.1 to 5.1.7 the foll
、owing destructive tests may be carried out on sample or prototype hoses. 5.2.2 Bend the hose to its minimum bend radius (asspecified in the relevant hose product specification) and while in the bent position carry out the procedure specified in5.1.1 to5.1.6 (omitting the measurement of elongation).
、5.2.3 Release the hose from the bent position and increase the pressure over a period of15 min to a specified multiple of the specified working pressure (usually five times for marine hose and four times for other types: see BS6596 or the relevant hose product specification). 5.2.4 Maintain this pre
、ssure for15 min and then further increase the pressure until the hose bursts. 1) 1 bar=10 5Pa=100 kPa.
