BS5173-2:
、1976 is withdrawn. The remainder of the1976 edition is to be revised and as each of the tests is revised it is intended to issue it as a separate Part or Section of BS5173, as described in BS5173-100. 10、ver. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on theinside front cover.BS5173-102.4:1990 BSI 03-1999 1 1 Scope This Section of BS5173 describes a method of determination of the volumetric expansion of
、hydraulic hoses. The basic principles are similar to those described in BS5173-102.2 but the test described in this Section is more appropriate to hydraulic hoses. It is a specialized test and should be carried out only at the specific request of the purchaser. NOTE 1This Section of BS5173 does not
、specify the test pressure at which the test will be carried out. The test pressure will be specified in the appropriate hose product specification. NOTE 2The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back page. 2 Apparatus 2.1 Test rig, as shown in Figure 1, co
、mprising a suitable source of fluid together with a pressure gauge, piping, valves and fittings enabling a vertical length of hose to be subjected to hydraulic pressure. The fluid used shall be distilled water unless otherwise specified. The bore of all piping and connections shall be smooth without
、 recesses or off-sets, so that all air may be freely removed from the system before carrying out each test. The valves shall be of such design as to open and close with minimum displacement of fluid. The apparatus shall be capable of increasing the pressure in the test piece at the following rate: a
、) between0.075 MPa/s and0.175 MPa/s for test pressures of up to12.5 MPa; b) between0.35 MPa/s and1.0 MPa/s for higher test pressures. NOTEFor safety reasons the pressure rating of the test apparatus should be capable of withstanding the test pressure with a safety factor of3. 2.2 A measuring cylinde
、r, of sufficient accuracy and capacity to measure the volume of fluid corresponding to the expansion of the hose under test. 3 Test pieces Three test assemblies with end fittings shall be tested. Each test assembly shall be a minimum of3m in length. NOTEThis length is selected to minimize the signif
、icance of any change in volume caused by the end fittings. 4 Conditioning No test shall be carried out within24h of manufacture of test piece. Test pieces shall be conditioned at standard laboratory temperature as specified in BS903-A35 before testing, for atleast3h. NOTEThe3h may be part of the24h
、after manufacture. 5 Procedure 5.1 Connect the test piece in position on the apparatus in such a way as to obtain a leak-proof seal taking care to avoid twisting the assembly. Maintain the test piece in a vertical position without being in tension while under pressure. Measure the free length of the
、 exposed hose of the test piece in accordance with BS5173-101.2. 5.2 Fill the reservoir with fluid. Open valves A and B and pump fluid through the test specimen. Continue pumping until all air is expelled from the system. 5.3 Close valve B and increase the pressure in the test specimen to the specif
、ied test pressure at the rate specified in 2.1. Close valve A to isolate the test specimen from the pressure source. Release fluid through valve B to reduce the pressure in a series of discrete steps down to atmospheric pressure. Select pressure stages less than or equal to10% of the specified test
、pressure. Collect the fluid expelled at each stage of pressure reduction in the measuring cylinder. Allow a period of at least60s to elapse between each stage of pressure reduction. If necessary withdraw further fluid to maintain pressure at the selected value. Record the volume of fluid collected t
、o the nearest0.01cm 3 . Carry out each test series three times over the full pressure range for each hose examined. 6 Expression of results For each hose assembly tested, the volumetric expansion per unit free length of test piece, E, (incm 3 /m) is given by the equation where V is the average volum
、e of fluid collected from the three expansion tests (in cm 3 ); L is the free length of the test piece (inm). Report the result in cubic centimetres per metre to the nearest0.01 cm 3 /m. NOTEThe volumetric expansion may be expressed as a percentage of the original volume, if required, by determining
、 the internal diameter and the free length of the hose assembly, and hence its volume, prior to testing. 7 Test report The test report shall include the following information: a) a reference to this method of test, i.e.BS5173-102.4; b) a full description of the hose and its origin; c) the dimensions
、 of the test piece; E V L - =BS5173-102.4:1990 2 BSI 03-1999 d) the test pressure; e) the volume of the three expansions for each test piece; f) the calculated hose expansion (in cm 3 /m); g) the percentage volumetric expansion, if required.
