、190:1985 ii BSI 09-1999 Foreword This first revision of this British Standard has been prepared under the direction of the Dairying Standards Committee. It supersedes BS5190:1975 which is withdrawn. At the time of publication of this British Standard, no corresponding International Standard exists o

、r is in preparation. The purpose of a pipeline filter is to remove any insoluble material, e.g.vegetable matter from dung, feed or bedding and inorganic matter from soil or dust, that has entered the milk after milk has left the udder. Such material which is called visible dirt (seeBS4938-2) can ent

、er milk either because it has not been removed from the teats prior to applying the teat cups or because of contamination when clusters occasionally fall to the floor during milking. Milk should be free from visible dirt. In practice there is a lower limit to the smallest amount which is detectable.

、 Some fine particles of dirt are smaller in size than fat globules and a filter which would remove fine dirt would also remove fat globules and thereby change the chemical composition of the milk. Care is therefore necessary in the selection of filter media. In general the removal of dirt by filtrat

、ion is unlikely to improve the bacteriological quality of the milk and indeed, the prolonged use of a dirty and contaminated filter would cause bacteriological deterioration. The use of pipeline filters for milking installations does not absolve the milk producer from taking the necessary precaution

、s to avoid dirt entering milk nor can it give him protection against legal action. Rather it is intended that pipeline filters should remove particulate matter which, in spite of good milking practice, may on occasions inadvertently enter milk. In specifying filtration efficiency it has been necessa

、ry to make assumptions concerning the nature and quantity of visible dirt found in milk and for this purpose use has been made of surveys carried out by the National Institute for Research in Dairying. Attention is drawn to the Materials and Articles in Contact with Food Regulations (SI1978, No.1927

、) which apply to materials in contact with milk. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal oblig

、nside front cover.BS5190:1985 BSI 09-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies the performance, construction, marking and labelling requirements for pipeline filters, filter bodies and filter elements for milking machines. The filter elements may be of the single use or multi-service type. The

、methods of test to be used for checking compliance with the requirements are given in Appendix A. NOTEThe publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this standard, the definitions of BS5545-1 apply, together with the following. 2.

、1 pipeline filter a device comprising a filter body and one or more filter elements 2.2 filter body a device that is suitable for connection in the delivery pipeline or transfer pipeline of a milking machine and for securely housing one or more filter elements 2.3 filter element a device which, when

、 fitted in a filter body, is intended to remove visible dirt that is not a constituent of normal milk as drawn from the cow. It may be of the single use or multi-service use type 2.4 standard test capacity the volume in litres of test milk (seeA.1.2), stated as500L or in multiples of500L, that the m

NOTEAccount should be taken o

、f the contact times and temperatures and concentrations of the chemicals to be used as well as any limitations mentioned by the filter manufacturer in his instructions regarding the employment of cleansing procedures as described in BS5226 and BS5305. 4.2 Filter bodies The filter body shall withstan

NOTEThe following should be taken into account. 1) The position of the filter unit will be governed by the type of milkin

、g installation but it should not be located where it will affect the milking vacuum; therefore, it should not be fitted into a milking pipeline which has the dual function of providing milking vacuum and conveying milk to the milk receiver. 2) The need to locate the filter where it is readily access

、for cleaning and disinfecting the filter, taking into account the recommendations of BS5226 and BS5305, with particular regard to the need for dismantling. NOTEThe following should be taken into account. 1) The need to remove and discard single service elements after each milking. 2) The need to cle

The information shall refer to the fact that separate clean filters shall be used for this purpose, and not those used for filtering the milk. e) A statement of the need to ensure that replacement filter elements are suitab

The information shall also include advice that, if the milk is dir

The recommended test rig is shown in Figure 1. It consists of two500L tanks fitted with mechanical stirrers,

、a centrifugal milk pump and pressure gauge, together with the necessary interconnecting pipework and control cocks for the filter under test. The rig should be arranged so that the milk flows downwards through the system. The milk supply tank should be free-draining, preferably with a shallow slippe

、r outlet, and should be constructed so that an outlet vortex does not form until after the measurement of flow rate described inA.1.3.4. The tanks should be marked to show the500L level in the supply tank and the480L level in the receiver. The mechanical stirring equipment on each tank should be suc

、h that during continuous agitation all foreign matter in the milk is distributed uniformly throughout the batch. The centrifugal milk pump should, under the operation condition, give a minimum delivery pressure of45kPa at a flow rate of3000L/h and should be arranged with the outlet at the bottom. Th

、e pressure gauge should have a scale range not less than0kPa to50kPa and not more than0kPa to100kPa. The filter under test should be mounted so that all sediment passing the filter element is discharged with the filtrate into the filtrate receiver. A.1.1.2 Apparatus for the preparation of coarse dir

、t, as described inB.2 of BS4938-2:1982, and for weighing small quantities of this material to 0.5mg. A.1.1.3 Filtration apparatus, as described in clause5 of BS4938-2:1982 to assess the visible dirt content of milk. A.1.2 Test milk Use whole milk of marketable quality with a butterfat content in the

、 range3.5% to4% at a temperature of30 C to35 C and filter it once through a pipeline filter of the type to be tested. Take a1L sample of this milk and determine its visible dirt content in accordance with the method described in BS4938-2. Record this dirt content asx mg/L of basic dirt. Prepare the

、test milk by adding, to this filtered milk,3mg/L of coarse dirt prepared in accordance withB.2 of BS4938-2:1982 and stirring. NOTE 1The dirt content of the test milk should be therefore(3+x mg/L). NOTE 2It is helpful to presoak the weighed dirt in1L of clean water to assist wetting and mixing. A.1.3

、 Method for filters of500L standard test capacity A.1.3.1 In a preliminary run using water, with filter complete and with the filter element under test in position, set the rate cock to give a flow rate of approximately4000L/h. Empty the system and fit either a new single service or a clean multi-se

、rvice filter element which has been subjected to the test for security described inA.3. A.1.3.2 Fill the milk supply tank to the500L level with test milk(A.1.2) at a temperature of30 C to35 C. Stir well and take a1L sample for future reference if required. Run the stirrer continuously throughout the test. A.1.3.3 After stirring sufficiently to ensure thorough wetting and mixing of the dirt open the outlet cock of the milk supply tank and start the milk pump. Start the mechanical stirrer in the filtrate receiver and check that the flow rate is about4000L/h. NOTEIn m
