5、tee. This standard does not include requirements for fiamma- bility of the pillows. The reason is that taking account of other bedding items used with the pillow (.e. a mattress and cover, sheets, blankets and counterpane, which represent the fuel load), research has shown that a pillow made from fl

6、ame-retardant foam does not reduce the hazard nor is there at the present time an inherently flame- retardant flexible material that meets the requirements of this standard. 7、. Flexible polyurethane pillows 1. Scope This Part of this British Standard sets out the requirements for flexible polyurethane foam head pillows with permanent fabric covers for use in hospitals by all patients except those under one year of age. 2. References The titles of the standards publicatio

8、ns referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 3. Dimensions and masses The dimensions and masses of flexible polyurethane pillows are given in table 1. Table 1. Heiciht shall be measured at the pillow centre when flat, 0 after it has been conditioned and subjected to a 5 N load in accordance with the pr

10、ocedure specified in BS 4443 : Part 2 : Method 7. Length and width shall be measured at the seam. 4. Materiais The pillow core shall be made from flexible load-bearing polyurethane foam, polyether type. The structure shall be homogenous and shall consist of an open intercommuni- cating cellular cons

11、truction, reasonably uniform and free from physical defects including splits, tears and large blow holes. Fillers shall not be used if their sole purpose is to increase density. The foam used in the construction of pillows may be moulded or in sheet form which is plain, cavitied or profiled. All foa

12、m used shall comply with class L of BS 3379 : 1975* and shall be capable of meeting the requirements of Part 100 of BS 1425 : 1960. The material shall be free from objectionable odour and from any substances, such as residual amines, likely to be harmful to human tissues. The material shall be undye

13、d (natural), white or any pastel shade. 0 5. Covering The covering shall be a white fully shrunk calico complying with the requirements of appendix C or as specified by the purchaser. The thread shall be white polyester core/cotton sheath sewing thread of resultant density R40 tex with a minimurn br

14、eaking load of 16 N. 6. Construction 6.1 Pillow core. Cores for pillows shall be constructed by one of the following methods. (a) Two sheets of foam of uniform thickness joined at the edges. (b) Two sheets of foam, each profiled on one side, separated by a sheet of foam, all sheets joined at the edg

15、es. (c) Two sheets of foam, each profiled on one side, separated by two profiled foam pads and a centre sheet of foam. The outer and centre sheets are joined at the edges. The inner foam pads shall be secured at all four corners to the outer and/or inner sheets so that they do not change position in

16、 use. (d) Two sheets of foam separated by a foam pad with the sheets joined at the edges. (e) Moulded. The minimum thickness of the outer sheets shall be 5 mm. All pillows shall be radiused at the edges. If the curve is formed by bending the sheet foam into shape. as distinct from moulding and cutti

17、ng, care shall be taken not to leave so much surplus foam to be compressed as to weaken or distort the seam or foam. Seams shall be at least as strong as the foam and the method of joining shall not be injurious to the foam or cover. Any sharp corners shall be removed. 6.2 Pillow covering. Each pill

18、ow shall be enclosed in a close fitting, permanent calico cover. The top and bottom of the cover, which may be cut separately or in one piece, shall have border seams at the sides and end(s). The fabric shall be cut squarely and the width of the seams shall be not less than 10 mm. Seams shall be on

19、the inside, one end of the cover being left open so that the foam component can be inserted. The open seam shall be closed neatly on the outside with a row of stitching. Seams shall be type SSa-1 complying with the require- ments of BS 3870. Machine stitching shall be stitch type 301 or 401 complyin

20、g with the requirements of BS 3870 with at least four but not more than five stitches to the centmetre. 25、use of downward displacement sterilizers can entail the exposure of the load to an oxidizing atmosphere at elevated temperature caused by the inherently slow removal of air from the load. The steaming time can be in excess of 2 h before correct conditions are obtained throughout the load and the exp

26、osures in (1 ), (2) or (3) finally given. (c) Sterilization by steam at subatmospheric pressure with an admixture of formaldehyde vapour in a purpose built sterilizer to the requirements of BS 3970. Exposure to sterilizing conditions is for up to 2 h at 73 “C. (d) Disinfecting by steam at subatmosph

27、eric pressure at 73 OC for up to 30 min using a sterilizer/disinfector as described in (c). , 9. Condition The pillows shall be delivered in a clean 2nd undamaged condition. They shall be free of all loose sewing thread ends. 10. Marking The cover of each pillow shall be clearly and indelibly marked

28、 with the following: (a) the contractors name or initials or recognized trade mark; (b) the month and year of manufacture; and (c) the number of this British Standard, .e. BS 5223. If it is claimed that the pillows may be sterilized or disinfected, the pillow shall be marked to indicate the method o

29、f sterilization or disinfection to be used. 11. Packaging Packaging and identification of the pillows shall be as agreed with the purchaser. Plastics coverings used as packaging shall be marked with the following warning: TO AVOID DANGER OF SUFFOCATION, REMOVE PLASTICS COVER BEFORE USING THE ARTICLE

THIS COVER SHOULD THEN BE DESTROYED. 2 a e A O O BSI BS*5223 PART*3 76 m 1624667 0171103 O m BS 5223 : Part 3 : 1976 Appendix A Porosity test Four cylindrical blocks of foam, 40 mm in diameter and 25 mm in height shall be cut from the centre of the sample. The orientation of these specimens shall

31、be such that the air flow in the test will be in the same plane as the direction of the rise of the foam (.e. vertically). If the direction of the foam rise is unknown, three sets of specimens shall be tested, one set for each plane of the foam. The specimens shall in turn be placed in a holder 36 m

32、m in diameter and 25 mm in depth, which opens into the chamber of the same cross-sectional area as the foam holder. This chamber shall be connected to an inclined oil mano- meter. Support, if provided on the chamber side of the sample holder, shall be with fine cross wires. Sufficient air shall then

33、 be sucked through the foam specimen into the chamber to create a steady pressure differential to 2.54 mm head of water across the faces of the specimen, and the flow of air measured. From the four measurements the average volume of air flowing each second shall be calculated and converted to flow p

34、er second per square centimetre of the circular face. Where three sets of specimens are tested, results for the set giving the greatest air flow shall be used in the calculations. The result shall be expressed in ml/(cm2 SI related to the test conditions of 25 mm thickness of sample and 2.54 mm head

35、 of water. Appendix B Adhesion test ,A specimen 75 mm wide and 150 mm long of the pillow seam or of the pad and sheet shall be prepared having the joint running at right angles to the 150 mm dimension and approximately in the centre of this length. This specimen shall be boiled in sodium hydroxide s

36、olution (c NaOH = 1 mol/L .e. 40 g NaOH per litre) for 10 min and then thoroughly rinsed in running tap water and dried at ambient temperature. The specimen shall then be conditioned and tested using the apparatus and general procedure of BS 4443 : Part 1 : Method 3. The whole specimen, instead of i

37、ndividual dumb-bells, shall be secured symmetrically in the clamps with the seam midway between and parallel to the edges of the two clamps, and the force to break the sample shall be recorded. 3 Appendix C Calico fabric for covering The fabric, woven wholly from cotton, shall be fully shrunk and bl

38、eached. The fabric shall be uniformly woven in plain weave. Selvedges shall be firm and straight. The fabric shall comply with the requirements given in table 3. Table 3.
