8、f BS5223 is one of four based on a series of specifications of the Department of Health and Social Security. The other three parts are: Part 1: Adult size spring interior mattresses; Part 2: Flexible polyurethane mattress cores 1) ; Part 3: Flexible polyurethane pillows 1) ; The first three Parts we
9、re prepared under the authority of the Bedding Standards Committee; this Part was prepared under the authority of the Cotton Standards Committee. Polyurethane coated nylon fabric has applications additional to those in the hospital sphere and is dealt with in a separate standard, BS . . . . “Polyure
10、thane coated nylon fabric” 1) . This Part gives metric sizes directly linked to the mattress sizes given in Parts1 and2 but other widely varying sizes that are likely to be in use for some time may be required. This standard does not include requirements for flammability of the mattress cover. The r
11、eason is that, taking account of other items used with the cover (i.e.mattress core, sheets, blankets and counterpane) that represent the fuel load, research has shown that a cover made from flame-retardant fabric does not necessarily reduce the hazard, nor is there at present an inherently flame-re
12、tardant material which meets the requirements of this standard. Use of a tight fit and slide fastener as specified may, however, help to reduce the hazard by excluding air from the space between the cover and the mattress. Certification. Attention is drawn to the certification facilities described o

Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations.

The dimensions of the mattress covers for foam mattresses shall be 1cm less in length and width than the dimensions of the mattress (as given in Table 2) in order to give a “stretch fit”. The dimensions thus calculated shall be subject to a tolerance of 1.0,+0cm in length and depth and 0
