In this revision, cores made from soft fibres are no longer included. Construction requirements

、and tolerances have been aligned with those in ISO4345. The parameter of lay length has been replaced by that of nominal diameter and runnage, and required tolerances for these are given. The methods of test, formerly described in the appendices, have been replaced by references to BS5053. Product c

、7-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies requirements for the construction, size and quality of fibre cores ranging from4mm diameter to24mm diameter for wire ropes and covers the following materials: a) hard fibres: manila and sisal; b) man-made fibres: fibre-forming polyolefins. Hard fibre

、and man-made fibre cores specified in this standard may be employed as main cores in ropes complying with BS302-1toBS 302-6and other similar standards. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Materials Cores shall be made from the follow

、ing fibres. a) For hard fibre cores, yarns shall be spun from new long fibre as follows: 1) sisal (Agave sisalana) (East African or equivalent); 2) manila (abaca) (Musa textilis). b) For man-made fibre cores, fibre-forming polyolefins (e.g.monofilament and split film polyethylene and polypropylene)

、shall be used. NOTEAttention is drawn to the fact that some British Standards, including certain specifications for wire ropes and their sockets, may prohibit the use of man-made fibre cores where elevated temperatures are encountered. 3 Construction 3.1 General Cores shall be laid up from not less

、than three similar and uniform strands. Each coil shall be continuous throughout its length, without core splices. 3.2 Core designation The core shall be designated by its nominal diameter (in mm) and nominal runnage (in m/kg). NOTEThe nominal diameter and nominal runnage should be agreed between th

、e core manufacturer and the wire rope manufacturer. The core manufacturer shall state whether the runnage is based on the lubricated or unlubricated core. 3.3 Ordered length The tolerances on the ordered length L of the cores shall be as given inTable 1. 3.4 Nominal diameter and nominal runnage The

、tolerances on nominal diameter and nominal runnage of the cores, expressed as percentages, shall be as given inTable 2. 3.5 Yarn sizes The maximum size of yarn used in the manufacture of hard fibre main cores shall be as given inTable 3. 3.6 Core lubrication Lubricants used to facilitate the prepara

、tion of hard fibres prior to, and/or in, the process of spinning shall be acid free and shall not contain water. NOTE 1Lubricants are not normally used in the spinning of man-made fibres. NOTE 2The lubricant content of pre-lubricated cores should be agreed between the core manufacturer and the wire

、l be not more than0.3%. 5 Sampling and methods of test NOTEShould any sample have properties not in accordance with the requirements of the standard (subject to the application of the appropriate tolerances), the inspector may at his discretion select a further sample from the same coil. In the even

、t of failure of the second test, the inspector may require replacement of that coil. 5.1 Sampling 5.1.1 Each sample taken shall be representative of the batch. For these purposes, a batch shall consist of coils of core of the same type, grade and size, manufactured under presumed uniform conditions.

、 5.1.2 The test sample shall be taken from the coil in such a manner that the lay is not disturbed The piece of core upon which the tests are carried out shall be at least5m from the outer end of the coil. In cases of dispute, the coil shall be placed upon a turntable for the purpose of obtaining th

、e sample. 5.1.3 The sample shall be at least4m long. 5.2 Methods of test 5.2.1 Core diameter and runnage Core diameter and runnage shall be determined in accordance with the methods described in BS5053. The number of tests to be carried out on any batch of coils, except for re-tests, shall not excee

、d one per coil. 5.2.2 Core lubricant content Core lubricant content shall be determined in accordance with the method described in BS5053. One test shall be carried out on a sample from every50t of core that are produced or annually, whichever is the less frequent. 5.2.3 Water soluble acids Water so

、luble acids shall be determined in accordance with the method described in BS5053. 5.2.4 Salt content Salt content shall be determined in accordance with the method described in BS5053. 6 Packaging and marking 6.1 Packaging Cores shall be packed in coils or reels of continuous lengths, and securely

、lashed. No coil shall contain more than one length. All ends shall be secured to prevent unravelling. NOTEAll coils should be suitably protected against the elements during transit, as agreed between the purchaser and the supplier. 6.2 Marking Each coil shall have a label attached on which shall be

、clearly and legibly marked the following information: a) the name of the core supplier; b) the number and date of this British Standard, i.e.BS525:1991 1) ; c) the type of fibre; d) the nominal length of the core in metres; e) the nominal diameter in millimetres; f) the nominal runnage in metres per
