This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.BS5350-C1:1986 BSI 07-1999 1 0 Introduction The strength of an adhesive joint partly depends on the type of stress placed upon it. A stress applied in cleavage mode to a joint between two rigid adherends may induce failure at

、 a load which is low, compared, for example, to that producing tensile or shear mode failure. The cleavage strength of a joint may therefore be a critical factor in the strength of the structure of which it is a part. In this method, a rigid joint is subjected to cleavage stress by application of a

、tensile force at one edge of the joint. The standard may be used both for assessing compliance of an adhesive with a specification and for quality control. 1 Scope This Part of BS 5350 describes a method for the assessment of the cleavage strength of adhesive bonds between rigid materials under spec

、ified conditions. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this Part of BS5350 are listed on the back page. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of BS5350, the following definitions, taken from BS6138, apply. 2.1 cleavage strength the force necessary to bring an adhesive assembly to

、the point of failure by the application of force in cleavage mode 2.2 cleavage a mode of application of a force to a joint between rigid adherends which is not uniform over the whole area but which results in a stress concentrated at one edge 2.3 faying surface the portion of a surface that is prepa

、red for bonding to another prepared surface; the portion of a surface bonded or joined to a cleaned surface 3 Principle A butt joint of specified dimensions and form is subjected to a cleavage force and the breaking force determined. 4 Supplementary information This method of test requires the follo

、wing supplementary information, which shall be specified when this method is called up. a) A description of the adherends and, if other than as specified inFigure 2, their dimensions. b) Details of the pretreatment of the adherends. c) Details of the application of the adhesive, including the covera

、ge or bond-line thickness, the number of coats applied to one or both surfaces and the drying conditions. d) The method of making the joint, including details of the bonding pressure, temperature, curing and whether the adhesive fillet is removed. If the curing temperature is given, it shall be stat

、ed whether it is that of the bond line or the atmosphere in which the assembly is to be maintained. e) Details of both the conditioning of the test piece before testing and the test atmosphere. 5 Apparatus 5.1 Testing machine. The machine shall comply with the requirements for grade A of BS5214-2. I

、t shall include grips which are self-aligning so that the force applied to the test piece is normal to the plane of the bond. 5.2 Adaptors, as shown inFigure 1. 6 Test pieces 6.1 Adherends The adherends shall be of the same rigid material. NOTE 1Steel is the preferable material of construction; for

、example, low carbon steel 055M15 complying with BS970. NOTE 2BS 5350-A2, which covers the selection of adherends, is in preparation. The form shall be as shown inFigure 2 and the dimensions, unless otherwise specified, shall be as shown inFigure 2. 6.2 Preparation of adherends Prepare the faying sur

、faces of the adherends in accordance with the recommendations of the adhesives manufacturer. In the absence of such recommendations, select an appropriate procedure from those specified in BS5350-A1.BS5350-C1:1986 2 BSI 07-1999 6.3 Preparation of test pieces Apply the adhesive to the faying surfaces

、 of the prepared adherends in accordance with the recommendations of the adhesives manufacturer. Bond the adherends in accordance with the recommendations of the adhesives manufacturer to form a test piece as shown inFigure 3. The bond line to which the force is applied shall be plane. To this end,

、take precautions to ensure that there is neither a protruding fillet of adhesive nor flaws in the bond line along the cleaving edge in the bonded test piece. Unless otherwise specified, remove the adhesive fillet, preferably by wiping before the adhesive sets. 6.4 Number of test pieces Not less than

、 five test pieces shall be tested. NOTEThe number of test pieces depends on the precision required (seeclause8 of BS5350-E1:1976). 7 Conditioning and test atmosphere The adherends shall be prepared, stored and bonded, and the test pieces conditioned and tested under standard conditions of temperatur

、e and humidity. Unless otherwise specified, these conditions shall be a temperature of23 2 C and a relative humidity of505%r.h. 8 Procedure Attach the conditioned test piece to the adaptors(5.2), as shown in Figure 4, and mount in the testing machine (5.1), taking care to align the test piece. Opera

、te the testing machine so that the test piece is subject to a force that increases at a constant rate and such that the test piece is broken in not less than20s and not more than90s. Record the force at break, in newtons, the mode of failure, i.e.whether adhesive, cohesive or in the adherend, and th

、e degree of coalescence of the adhesive film. 9 Expression of results Express the cleavage strength as the arithmetic mean, in newtons, of the breaking force for all test pieces which have broken as a result of failure in the adhesive, and give an indication of the spread of results, e.g. as the sta

、ndard deviation (see BS5350-E1). 10 Test report The report shall state the following: a) a designation of the adhesive, giving all information required for complete identification of the sample; b) the items and values of supplementary information given in clause4; c) the rate of application of the

、force; d) the number of test pieces tested, the mean breaking force (in newtons) and information concerning the spread of results; e) the type of failure for each test piece, and the degree of coalescence of the adhesive film; f) that the method of test was conducted in accordance with this Part of
