、s Policy Committee. This edition introduces technical changes but it does not reflect a full review or revision of the standard, which will be undertaken in due course. This edition differs from the previous edition in that the scope has been amended to emphasize that the test is not intended to be

、used for obtaining numerical design data, and the requirements concerning the conditioning and testing atmosphere have been clarified. Peel testing of adhesive bonds is widely used for assessing the performance of adhesives and, because of the wide diversity of the flexibility of substrates which ma

、y be used, no single peel test will fulfil the requirements of all cases. This Part of this British Standard is intended to test a rigid sandwich assembly of adherends and is one of a series of peel tests. The other tests in this series are as follows: Part C9: Floating roller peel test; Part C10: 9

、0 peel test for a flexible-to-rigid assembly; Part C11: 180 peel test for a flexible-to-rigid assembly; Part C12: 180 “T” peel test for a flexible-to-flexible assembly; Part C14: 90 peel test for a rigid-to-rigid assembly. It should be understood that all peel tests in which one adherend is peeled f

、rom another involve complex stress distribution, At the separation of the adherends, there is a stress concentration resulting in rupture of the adhesive in the bond line, but there are also other elements of force required to bend both adherends and to strain the more flexible adherend. The force r

、ecorded is a compound of all these elements of force. The test does not necessarily reflect how an adhesive would perform in service. Such design data would usually be obtained using the construction materials and configurations used in an actual design. WARNING NOTE. This British Standard calls for

、 the use of substances and/or procedures that may be injurious to health if adequate precautions are not taken. It refers only to technical suitability and does not absolve the user from the legal obligations relating to health and safety at any stage. A British Standard does not purport to include

、all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i a

This will be indicated in the amendment table on theinside front cover.BS5350-C13:1990 BSI 07-1999 1 1 Scope This Part ofBS5350 describes a climbing drum peel test for t

、he determination, under specified conditions, of the resistance of joints to perpendicular peel stresses on the adhesive layer. It is applicable to the testing of joints between an outer metal sheet and the core of sandwich assemblies, e.g.honeycomb or other composites. This test is intended for ran

、king and quality control of adhesives and not for obtaining data for design purposes. 2 References This Part makes reference to the following standards publications: BS 5214, Testing machines for rubbers and plastics. BS 5214-1, Constant rate of traverse machines. BS 5350, Methods of test for adhesi

、ves. BS 5350-A1, Adherend preparation. BS 5350-E1, Guide to statistical analysis. 3 Definition For the purposes of this Part of this British Standard the following definition applies. 3.1 peel strength the force required to separate progressively the two members of a bonded test piece of specified d

、imensions over the adhered surfaces, under the specified conditions of test. It is expressed in newtons 4 Principle Adherends are separated at a substantially steady rate from an open edge of a prepared bond line so that the separation occurs progressively along the bond line. In the climbing drum p

、eel test the adherends are separated by the action of a revolving drum which rotates by the application of a tensile force applied by a tensile testing machine. This force is the combination of the true peeling force and the rolling force. 5 Apparatus 5.1 Tensile testing machine. The tensile testing

、 machine shall comply with the requirements of BS5214-1 and it shall be of low inertia. 5.2 Peeling jig, consisting of a flanged drum and flexible loading straps or cables as shown in Figure 1. The outside radius of the drum shall be51.0 1.0mm, and the radius of the flange, including one half of the

、 thickness of the loading straps or cables, shall be12.7 0.2mm larger than the radius of the drum. NOTEThis12.7 0.2mm, less half the thickness of the adherend to be peeled, is the effective torque arm of the apparatus. A drum clamp (Figure 2) shall be used to hold the adherend against the face of th

、e drum. The drum shall be balanced about the axis by the use of counterweights (as shown in Figure 1) placed diametrically opposite the drum clamp to compensate for the mass of this clamp. The drum and flanges with the drum clamp and its compensating mass shall weigh not more than3.6kg, a lighter ma

、ss being preferable to facilitate handling of the apparatus. 6 Test piece 6.1 Types of test pieces 6.1.1 Honeycomb structure. The test piece shall consist of an assembly as shown in Figure 3. The longer adherend shall have a30mm tail at either end. 6.1.2 Sheet metal. The test piece shall consist of

、an assembly as shown in Figure 4. The longer adherend shall have a30mm tail at either end. 6.1.3 Other materials. The dimensions of the adherends shall be as specified in the material specification. 6.2 Preparation of test pieces Prepare the faying surfaces of the adherends in accordance with Part A

、1 of this standard. Apply the adhesive and bond the adherends by the methods recommended by the manufacturer of the adhesive, either using individual test pieces, or, alternatively, by bonding panels of suitable size and cutting test pieces from the assembly with a suitable tool such as a band saw,

、discarding12mm edges and taking care to avoid frictional heating or mechanical damage to the bond. 6.3 Number of tests The number of tests depends on the precision required (seePartE1 of this standard) but shall be not less than three and shall be stated in the test report. NOTEThe number of test pi

、eces used for the test should be agreed between the manufacturer and the user of the adhesive.BS5350-C13:1990 2 BSI 07-1999 7 Conditioning and testing atmosphere As the storage conditions of the adherends and the times and environmental conditions obtaining during the curing, conditioning and storag

、e of the bonded assemblies can have a substantial effect on results, either: a) the conditions shall comply with the instructions given by the manufacturer of the adhesive; or, if no conditions are specified by the manufacturer: b) the conditions for storage, curing and conditioning of the adherends

、 and bonded assemblies shall be23 2 C and505%r.h. The bonded assemblies shall be stored for at least16h before testing. The times and conditions shall be stated in the test report. 8 Procedure Determine the combination of peeling force and rolling force of an assembly as follows. Fix the test piece

、to the drum by one of the30mm tails as shown in Figure 1. Fix the other tail of the test piece to the top grip of the testing machine. With the test piece on the peeling jig suspended from the top grip of the testing machine, fix the yoke to the bottom grip of the testing machine and adjust the forc

、e indicator to zero. Then set the machine in motion at the specified rate of separation of the grips to peel off the layer over a length of at least150mm. Report the rate of separation of the grips. NOTE 1The preferred rate is25mm/min. Record the force required to separate the adherends. NOTE 2Autog

、raphic recording is preferable. Continue the test until at least150mm of bonded length is separated. Note the type of failure. To enable the true peel strength to be determined it is essential that compensation be made for other forces acting on the test piece. These forces are taken as the rolling

、force (F 0 ) and three methods for estimating it are given below. a) Without compensation for the force exerted in bending the adherend. Insert a strip of fabric300mm long,75mm wide and0.20mm to0.28mm thick, having negligible stiffness, in place of the test piece. Determine the force sufficient to r

、oll the drum upward. b) With compensation for the force exerted in overcoming the stiffness of the adherend 1) Insert a piece of material of the same composition, properties and dimensions as the adherend to be peeled in place of the test piece. Determine the force sufficient to roll the drum upward

、. NOTE 1This method largely offsets the torque required to bend the adherend in the peel test. The forces imposed on the adherend during the peel test usually result in greater bending than is obtained when the unbonded adherend is wound round the drum. Therefore, more torque is required to bend a b

、onded adherend than an unbonded adherend. Hence this compensation is only approximate. 2) At the close of the peel test reverse the direction of crosshead travel and record the force needed to unroll the peeled adherend. NOTE 2This method, again, is necessarily only an approximation because the cond

、ition of the adherend may have been altered by the work put into it by rolling it around the drum. 9 Expression of results Take the force indicated when the adherends are peeled over a length of at least150mm, after disregarding the first25mm, as the peel force. For each test piece determine from th

、e curve of force/grip separation the average peeling force for the combination of the peeling force and the rolling force (F 1 ) in newtons and the average for the rolling force (F 0 ) in newtons. Determine these forces from the curves by drawing average estimate lines (seeFigure 5) or, if a more ac

、curate result is required, by using other suitable means such as integration of the area under the trace. Record the maximum and minimum forces. Calculate the average peeling force (F) from the equation: F = F 1 F 0 where Calculate the arithmetic mean of the individual average peeling forces. NOTE 1

、Initial peak values, if required, may be recorded separately. NOTE 2For the statistical treatment of results see Part E1 of this standard. 10 Test report The report shall state the following: a) a designation of the adhesive, giving all information required for complete identification of the sample;

、 F is the peeling force (in newtons); F 1 is the combined peeling force and rolling force (in newtons); F 0 is the rolling force (in newtons).BS5350-C13:1990 BSI 07-1999 3 b) a description of the adherends including material thickness and surface preparation; c) a description of the bonding process,

、 including method of application of the adhesive, drying or precuring conditions (where applicable) and curing time, temperature and pressure; d) the average thickness (as precisely as possible) of the adhesive layer after formation of the bond; e) a complete description of the test piece including

、dimensions and construction and the number of test pieces; f) the conditioning procedure prior to testing and the test atmosphere; g) the rate of separation of the grips; h) the method of determining the average combination of the peeling force and rolling force (F 1 ); i) the method of determining

、the rolling force (F 0 ) and its average; j) the average, maximum and minimum peeling force values (F) for each test piece in newtons, and the arithmetic mean of the individual results; k) the type of failure for each test piece, i.e.whether adhesive, cohesive or adherend, and, if applicable, the de

、gree of coalescence of the adhesive; l) that the method of test complied with the requirements of this standard, i.e.BS5350-C13; m) any other factors that may have affected the result.
